That's what's so fascinating, is seeing how little is actually on the page. It makes you realize how differently it all could have played with different actors. I agree that by this time they were so comfortable with each other, so trusting, that it all seemed very natural and real.

So much of it is expression, body language, line delivery. "It's late." "It is?" would have sounded completely different from other actors. So much of it is that Chris and Amber really seem to know their characters, deep down. Adam always seemed real to me, because Chris seemed to believe in him. In the wrong hands, Adam (in general) could have come across as creepy-pathetic, or totally clueless, or just someone Joan would want to avoid. Instead he was endearing, because he was so believable with his, "I'm in my own little world, yo, and I'm perfectly happy here." It was fascinating to see Joan by turns checking out his world, and slowly leading him by the hand into her world.

Oh yes, I totally agree. I think Chris was just too modest to admit that he had a large part in creating Adam. I think by the middle of the season, he knew the character so well that he just did what he thought was right with Adam. And it totally worked.

The whole thing fascinates me. If you simply read it on the page and knew nothing of the show, you so wouldn't get it. But the way they breathed life into it, the connection between Joan and Adam is utterly palpable. Why can't they speak to this kind of thing in the commentaries?

I agree again. And I'd love for them to talk about this in the commentaries. That's what we all wanna hear!

Chris was wrong when he told us that it was equally the show's scripts and him that created the Adam that we love. I just read the Recreation and No Bad Guy script bits and watched those parts of the eps and yes, the idea was on the page. But Chris and Amber MADE those scenes.

Especially the one on the stairs and the final scene in No Bad Guy.

In the first place, the scene on the stairs isn't even set on the stairs in the script. Secondly, Joan propping her injured foot on Adam's knee, while Iris leans her arm on his thigh is not there. And I love the direction and the acting in that scene. The bit when Joan's try to sit down and Adam's holding his hands out just case she falls. Not there. All of this great stuff, made up on the spot, in part by the director, I'm certain, but a large part of it is actor instinct. And let's face it, Chris and Amber were both seasoned pros by this point. Plus, it's so blatantly obvious that they trusted each other and just had a really good bond.

That final scene is ALL them. No question. There's no real direction on the page. I'm sure there was some on the set. You can tell what directors did by the way shots are framed. For instance, the script doesn't say Joan cries at the end, but the fact that it was shot over the shoulder, in close-up tells me that it was a choice made by the director. Chris has talked about the beats in that scene, the silences. I'm sure those were deliberate too. But that's just set-up, there's so much more in the execution. The looks between these two are always there. But I'm curious about the touches in this episode. Who's idea was it that they would change the venue of the stair scene so that she would have an excuse to touch him, giving him permission to touch her later?

I know the difference. I just didn't know how to call that one here. So I said transcript.
Yeah, I used to download transcript from the web and even I noticed that there were mistakes, but they help a lot to understand if I watch an episode.

I just carefully read through the No Bad Guy scenes because I haven't really had the time before. Wow, that last scene is just amazing, especially when you compare what's on the page and how it translated to what's on the screen. This scene is so powerful when you watch it. On paper it looks kinda puny. Amber and Chris really came through. All the beats, all the meaningful looks. That Adam is playing with Joan's bandage isn't mentioned at all in the script. Might have been the director's idea, but ultimately Amber and Chris made it real. I gotta give these guys so much credit. They did some amazing work. Wow.

Dude, these are not transcripts. They are real pages of a real teleplay. Sorry to be nitpicky about that but it is important that people know the difference. A transcript is someone sitting around typing up an approximation of what happened in an ep. There are tons of those online. Who cares? These are pages from the actual shooting script. I want everyone who reads them to be very clear on that. This is what the actors had in their hands at one time.

Pg 25 doesn't really belong in there, but I got into a sort of rhythm scanning both sides of the page. Next time hopefully it will be just the Adam scenes or scenes where they're talking about him, or they pertain to his and Joan's storyline.
