Okay, so after I solved the mystery if my crappy old TV has a scart socket or not (thanks for your help, Tina), I just purchased my first own DVD player. I hope it arrives on Saturday.

They also call the Cinch plugs Composite sometimes. The Philips player, according to their website, has both Scart and Composite. Now you just have to find out what your TV has. Sometimes they have the composite sockets in the front, often behind some sort of hatch. The Scart should always be in the back. I have at least three Scart cables at home that I don't need. If I lived any closer to your place, I could easily give you one.

USB? No, that's not to connect the DVD player, that means the DVD player has a USB socket for you to put a USB stick in that has video data on it that it will then play off the USB stick. You'll need a Scart cable to connect the TV and the DVD player. Unless your TV doesn't have a Scart socket.

It might also be possible to connect them via Cinch, but both the DVD player and TV need to have the sockets for that:

There's also all kinds of adapters to switch between these, just in case your DVD player and TV don't have the same connectors.

CED discs were large discs that were held in a caddy. You never touched the disc, but inserted the entire caddy into the player and the machine would remove it from the caddy. The discs were played with a needle, much like a record.

Malcolm in the Middle and Punk'd. Loved them shows, and they stopped producing the dvd's after season 1/2.

Around the 500 mark atm.

I've never recorded a dvd.

7. How many different video formats have you owned? And how many of each?
Beta - Never had
VHS - Still must have about 50
LaserDisc - Never had
CED Disc - Never heard of
DVD - About 500
HD-DVD - Don't see any need in buying them
Blu-Ray - So far, just under 10.

I'm sorry to hear that. My last DVD player broke like 2 weeks ago and I had to buy a new one. But a few days after that another DVD player broke in my house and my parents bought a new one.
