Just got back from seeing Apes.  It's great!  So much fun.  I can't remember the last time I had so much fun watching a movie.  It had some great in-jokes for us hardcore Apes fans and it hit all the right notes.  In my opinion, it's dang-near perfect.  I loved it and wish I could afford to see it again!

Hail Caesar!

So glad you liked it.  I felt the exact same way.  I really want to see it again or buy the movie.  I already loved James in 127, and this one upped the anty.  I know people give him a hard time for the choices he makes (especially recently) but I actually admire him for the decisions he makes.

Definitely one worth seeing.

Re: James Franco Appreciation Thread

It's just backlash because he's successful.  At least he's interesting.  And smart.  And decent.

I'll definitely have to get it on DVD.  The extras should be great too.

Re: James Franco Appreciation Thread

Yeah. He is smart, I kind of admire him for going back and getting his masters.
The dvd features should be good, better than 127 hours. I think the only features on there is a commentary from the director.  I love listening to commentaries so I might rent it off netflix just to listen to it and watch it again.  One dvd bonus feature is not enough for me to buy a dvd.

I know they did the Ape similar to gollum in Lord of the Rings.  It was Andy Serkis who played the ape and then they used new line cinema technology for the effects.  That's all I could tell you though.  It would be interesting to learn more about it.

Re: James Franco Appreciation Thread

The thing that people are not acknowledging is that it was not shot against a green screen with everything being CGI'd in later.  It was shot on real sets with Andy in the mocap suit actually interacting with all the other characters.  When Caesar grabs hold of a person or thing, Andy was really grabbing hold of that person or thing.  It was only the ape "suit" that was CGI'd in.  That's revolutionary filmmaking.  Being actually in the scene, touching things, allows for the most realistic feeling CGI characters I've personally ever seen.  They have real physical weight to them.

And the story is just terrific.  Compelling.  Emotional.  One review I read said the film took almost an arty approach to the story.  Another cited how dark it is, and how it's not at all some cheeseball big summer action flick.  It's a deeply human drama with a few action set pieces.  A real psychological thriller, based entirely on character.  So true.

Just last week, I listened to NPR interview Andy about the suit and how it was used in LOTR and the Apes.  Really interesting interview...and he was charming!  Not Gollumy at all.

Watch this and see how it was done.  Andy in the scene.  This is just magnificent.

And please check out Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll if you love Andy and want to actually see him kill it as punk rocker Ian Dury.

Re: James Franco Appreciation Thread

Pretty interesting to read and watch.  Serkis is amazon, definitely deserves an oscar nod.  So hard to reach that type of emotion with no words.  My friend and I were just talking about that the other day.

I agree that although Franco is talented, Serkis definitely steals the show in this one.

I did start watching Freaks and Geeks though again as a a little pick me up for the week.  Such a great show.  I never watched it all the way through when it was originally on.

I love that show.  I just watched it again a few months ago.  What a blast!

I found another Andy Interview I'm just about to watch it...

Very charming guy.  Seems like a neat person.  Can see why people want to work with him so much.  My friends and I were saying when and if he retires Serkis should start a school for that type of acting.

Re: James Franco Appreciation Thread

Was bittersweet to watch the last episode of Freaks and Geeks last night.  Can't wait to see the commentary.  There is one for each episode and some have two! I've decided I like Jason Segel better as a tv actor and not movie actor (although I'm looking forward to the muppets).  I prefer James Franco as a movie actor and not a tv actor.

Re: James Franco Appreciation Thread

Do you have regular or special 8 disc yearbook edition dvd? I have 8 disc. I preordered it from the Freaksandgeeks official website before it was even released back in 2004. It has way more extras.

I think i have the regular edition.  Still comes with a lot of features though.  Unless I get bored with this one I'll probably keep it. I got it on a really good sale at Best Buy!

Re: James Franco Appreciation Thread

Reading entertainment news tonight I came across this news article about UK Halloween All Night movie festival.  A move with James Franco's little brother - Dave, and Mark Pellegrino called 'Bad Meat.'

A Boot Camp for troubled teens becomes a nightmarish charnel house when spoiled meat transforms the staff from sadistic fascists into something much, much worse… Get ready for spilt blood, vomit, faeces and bile – and not only on screen – in the strangest, weirdest destined-for-cult-dom gross-out in ages.
90 mins. Canada 2011 Cast: Elizabeth Harnois, Dave Franco, Mark Pellegrino, Tahj Mowry & Jessica Parker Kennedy

Sounds gruesome!

Fun to attend if I were in the UK smile

I've always thought that both Chris and James would look great in a black&white movie about the 40s. big_smile This pic just reminded me of that.
