Re: Pet discussions

Believe it or not, I've never raised a puppy, so I'm not sure what to tell you.  I always adopt adult dogs and I got so lucky with Polly.  She is PERFECT on leash and she couldn't care less when I leave in the mornings.  If I was in your shoes, I'd search for a breed-specific Facebook group and join it.  Then ask the folks in there if anyone has any ideas.  I get so much information and many helpful suggestions from the people in my Potcake Facebook group.  And I've made some wonderful friends as well.

Re: Pet discussions

okay so I've been in the predicament of how much time I should give Elinor and how much time to myself.  Last week I had something almost every night and it seems like the same this week.  Is that bad for a pup?  I've made sure to allow time between work and these events to walk and play with her for an hour and I have a friend check on her three times a week for me but I still feel guilty leaving her.  I took her on a 2 hour walk this morning and she was the perfect pup!  What are your puppy boundaries?  tongue

Re: Pet discussions

How does she do when you're not home?  Since my dogs are adults, they're fine when I leave.  But I'm pretty much a homebody so I guess they know they can count on me to be home most nights.  I hardly ever go out during the week.  When I do, it's usually a work event that I have no choice but to attend.  Wish I had a better answer.  My lack of puppy-raising experience betrays me.

Re: Pet discussions

I actually think she's doing better now that she knows I'll be gone a little more.  I've noticed she's more calm playful when I'm around then bouncing off the walls recently.  I also took her on a 2 hour walk though sunday and we relaxed all day together so that helped.  I try to dedicate the weekend to her but I've heard when you go from one extreme to the other it can cause puppy anxiety and I think she has that a little.  But we are getting there....

Re: Pet discussions

Spending good quality time with her on the weekends is a great thing for both of you.  She will eventually adjust to your schedule.  They all do.  Dogs love routines.  Getting up at the same time, eating at the same time, going out at the same time.  You're doing fine.   smile

Re: Pet discussions

I have pet news, too. My brother and his wife got a puppy a few weeks back. It's a Labrador and he's called Lucky!

Re: Pet discussions

That is the cutest puppy! He's so little smile

Elinor got spayed the other day! sad  She was not a happy camper but is doing better.  Lots of sleeping it off!  She has to wear a cone and when I'm out she's in her crate.  I'm glad I did it during the summer so I could be with her and she wouldn't be uncomfortable with the cone on in her crate.  It takes up extra space.

Re: Pet discussions

Question on boarding Deb:  do you recommend a friend taking care of pets or boarding at the vet?  How do you feel about that?

Re: Pet discussions

A friend is always best.  I'm babysitting my foster Mickey from 2011 again for a week starting tomorrow.  He's comfortable here.  And I keep Bodhi whenever Casey needs me to.  Do you have anyone you trust who loves Elinor and vice versa?  Someone who could stay at your house would be best, but their place is better than a kennel.  I'm lucky to have Dave to help with my pups.

Re: Pet discussions

It's Elinor's birthday today! Grade Level night didn't stop us from celebrating! A little walk, a play date in the courtyard, a treat and new toy was just the way to celebrate turning one and ending the day smile  Even with all the trips to the vet and her insane amount of energy I'm glad to have this one...

Re: Pet discussions

As of today, Polly has been with me for a whole year!  Of course, I was just fostering at first.  Her official adoption day was 2/2/13.

Re: Pet discussions

She loves that park.  She does NOT like the dog park.  She won't even leave my side and go play.  So we just go to the "people park" instead.

Oh, Maria, I'm sorry to hear that.  Does he get out often?  My cat got away some too, but he always came back.

Re: Pet discussions

Sorry to hear that, Maria! I was always anxious about my cat when she was away for more than a day.
At the house that hosts my apartment we have a stray cat living in the backyard, btw. She is sooo cute! Pitch-black with yellow eyes. I don't see her often, but sometimes she comes out when I am about to enter the house and then I pet her a little and talk to her. For some odd reason she loves sniffing my backpack. lol
