OK, for those of you who've seen An American Crime, how to you purge it? How do you get it out of your head so you can get on with your life? For anyone who hasn't seen it but might be interested, think carefully before proceeding. I watched a lot of stuff this weekend, including Normal Adolescent Behavior (twice) and Graduation (for the 3rd time), but I can't get this movie to go away and leave me alone. To the point where I wish I hadn't seen it. Been a while since anything bothered me this much.

Yeah, I kinda wanna take my brain out and scrub it clean with a Brillo pad or something. I'm gonna have the most trouble getting the ugly images of Mike Welch being so horrible out of my head especially. And I need to see Ellen Page being a strong hero again.

Yeah, I'll give that a shot. Trouble is, as a non-Luke fan, I can't figure out anything Lukey that would scrub the ugliness from my head. If I liked him, I'm sure that would work. Damn.

OK, so sometimes the best way to deal with something that bothers you is to face it head-on. Maybe reading others' opinions of the movie will help me deal with what it did to me. So I'm reading and I ran across a review on IMDb that had this to say about something that happened during the Sundance screening...
I was at the world premiere of this film at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. I read the blurb in the program book, but had no clue what I was in for. The film starts out with a girl talking. After you watch the film you realize, it is a dead girl talking. I had no idea who Sylvia Likens was much less what she had endured as an abused 16 year old until I saw this film. Ten to twenty minutes into the film I could feel several knots in my stomach and an exhorbitant amount of rage because of the images I was watching. This film is heavy and hard to watch. So heavy that chaos errupted in the movie theatre when an audience member, who sat behind me, collapsed. This was not an elderly person I might ad. He, yes "HE" was probably between 25-28. At first I heard people whispering that an elderly lady suffered a heart attack, then people started to scream for the lights to be turned on and for the projectionist to stop the film. The lights were turned on and the film was stopped. It almost seemed like someone had placed a bomb in the theatre because people where heading for the exit, others where frightened and did not know what to do, and others just sat in their chair waiting for the film to continue. Of course, the next day, this was the talk of the town.
Larry, you were there, right? Is that true?

This must have been at another screening than the one I attended. Most films are shown several times. Nothing like that happened at my screening and this is the first I've ever heard about this. "The talk of the town?" I devoured all the press I could and never saw it mentioned.
I can only tell you how I got it out of my head. I happened to have seen about a half dozen films in a row at Sundance which were all very dark. This was just one of them. By the time I'd seen a few more I'd pretty much wiped it from my mind. So, for me, the solution wasn't seeing happy, lighthearted films. It was seeing more horrific and gruesome ones. Of course, I wouldn't necessarily recommend that nor would I have chosen to do so. That's just how it happened.
That said, don't say I didn't warn you. I've been trying to let people know how difficult it is to watch for a year and a half now (I'm not talking about in my review). It's the only film I've ever seen which I've specifically told certain people they should NOT see. I've never done that before or since and I saw over 500 movies at festivals since the start of 2006 including some pretty awful ones.
One way that people have been able to deal with it is to post on the IMDb boards. Sylvia's mother actually posts there herself and she has a website. She also has a MySpace for Sylvia, as does her real-life sister. I've posted and replied on all of them on various blog entries and such and had them all write to me personally. Having Sylvia's mother or sister actually write and tell you how much they appreciate your comments is a big help.

I'm not sorry I saw it. Exactly. The last time something stuck with me this much was Stephanie Daley. I didn't mind that too badly though. This one, it's different. Probably because there are so many actors I love in it and I can still see their faces perfectly as I sit here today. Honesly, Larry, I don't know how I'm ever going to look at some of them again. I will, of course, but today, I just can't fathom it.
I will get over this. Might take some time, but I'll get rid of it eventually.
I don't think I could communicate with the real mom and sister. I'm still angry at both of them. And they don't need to hear that.
As for Mike, I feel toward him today a bit like I felt toward Chris after the infamous Trial & Error ep of Joan Of Arcadia. I love him and I loathe him. I wanna slap him and I wanna hug him. But right now, I can't look at him without feeling a terrible knot in my stomach.
Wow. This is what film is supposed to do.

Wow, You guys have me so curious but I don't know if I want to see it now. I am a prettty emotional person, and things tend to stick with me pretty hard too. Maybe I'll skip this one, I have a hard time watching the news sometimes. Its not that I want to go through life with rose colored glasses, it just once I see something that affects me so profoundly, like I think this movie will, I have a hard time getting pass it. So, we'll see.

Okay, on a MUCH lighter note, has anyone seen the yogurt commercial with Ramsey and Mrs. Landing God?;)

Can't really say I dig it much, I like Michael's more "natural" look better. Though this makes him older.

I thought for a minute this is the look he had in Twilight... I almost flipped my lid.

I don't think he looks like that in Twilight. You saw set photos from Twilight that he's in, right? I'm guessing this is a very recent look. Like, post-Twilight. Bet Larry would know. He posted the pics in the first place.

I like 'em. He looks like a man finally, instead of a little boy who's just way too tall.

Yeah, I did see pictures on the set and he didn't look like that yet. The last three pictures, however, look kind of like New Moon (the second Twilight book) Mike.
Offline
Hehe. I was actually on my way over here to post it for you guys. Thanks for taking care of it!
It's something he did just recently, after Twilight wrapped. The response so far has been 100% positive among the comments on his MySpace blog post. They seem to like it a lot:

There are a couple of different looks there. You'll notice that he's clean-shaven in some and a bit scruffier in others. So he still looks pretty young in a couple, especially the second to last, I think.
I'll be seeing him a week from Tuesday so I'll let you know what it looks like in person.

Give him a squashing bear hug from us, will you? Ask him if he wants a pair of socks from Germany. You know, maybe a pair of really tacky ones, like in the black/red/gold German colors.
And, hey, gee, look what else I found on that same website:
Okay, we're straying from the subject. Though I dare say Mike will look very good in that last attire too, nevermind his hair or face fuzz. And why don't you just take a picture of him where he gives a thumbs up especially for us?

Wow, I read that quickly and thought you said take a picture of him in tight boxer briefs (or something to that effect). He does stand in front of the mirror in his tighty whities in Mandy Lane.

Exactly! Although I can see Larry having a hard time explaining to Mike why on earth he'd want to take a picture of Mike in briefs, holding his thumb(s) up.
