I'm going to see I AM Legend today. I don't want to see something happen to the dog. =[

Just got back from the movie myself and Sean, your review is dead-on. They could've hired a more interesting actress to play Anna, but other than that it was a fun ride. I really enjoyed watching Robert crack up a little bit after what happens (you know what I mean). Honestly, if not for the damn zombies, I could totally live like him and be pretty happy.

I agree Deb. The movie is really good!

Wow, IAL had the biggest December opening ever. Expectations were that it would take in about $65 million. It did over $76 million. Nice.

I watched it last night with Rob. While Rob was actually disappointed, I still liked it enough not to be. Maybe I didn't expect as much from the movie. I had been hoping for a good, suspenseful popcorn movie. And I got that all the way.
Rob's main complaint was that while the visuals were great, the story was too weak. They built up all these characters (well, Neville, mainly) and they didn't end up doing much with them. I guess you could argue that point, and I do agree that sometimes it seemed like they were introducing little bits and pieces that then just kept hanging there without ever being revisited or properly explained. Like when he gets caught in the rope and almost gets killed. Was that a trap he laid himself and couldn't remember? Did the Dark Seekers lay that trap? Was I too thick to really get it? Somehow it felt like they just put that there as a means to have him be in danger. It was a little un-elegant if you ask me.
I felt nicely entertained and by no means do I regret having spent money on it. I thought Will Smith did a terrific job. But it wasn't a movie that blew me away.
To comment on what Sean said, I wasn't bothered by the appearance of the Dark Seekers. Maybe that's because I haven't read the book. But now, in retrospect, I guess they looked a little too much like computer game foes...
Next movie I'd like to see is Into The Wild (starting Jan 31), although at first I wasn't sure about this one. And then there's Cloverfield (also starting Jan 31). All the other movies on my agenda don't have a German release date yet. And God knows if any of them show without dubbing. I read about this really interesting sounding Irish movie, called "Once", which I'd love to see. I can imagine it might be a little like "Before Sunrise". But I doubt I'll get to watch it in English. Oh well...

That trap was set by the Dark Seekers. The point was that they had learned from watching him how to get to him. That's what made them so horrifying. They weren't just mindless zombies, they were evolving. That's actually very elegant.
Hey, Carol just sent me a copy of Once. I wanted to see it in the theater too, but it was during that time when I had zero extra money.
And they are running the Cloverfield commercials into the ground here. But I still wanna see it. The commercial they're running features that guy who played Convenience Store God on JoA. He has the last line it it, "It's gonna be the greatest night ever!" Ummmm..... Maybe not.
Don't forget about Juno. I think you'll love it. It's just completely wonderful.

Not if people don't get it. But I think that was just me. My colleague Jörg also got it.

Cool. Let me know if it's worth watching. I'll know next week if it's showing anywhere in English, but I seriously doubt it.

Yeah. God knows when it'll start here. Didn't I say in the summer? It's also a movie where I really can't say whether anyone's gonna pick it up in English. Kinda sounds like the kind of movie they might not even show in German in a lot of theaters. I'll look into it when they release it over here. Same goes for Lars And The Real Girl.

Yes, but Juno is breaking box office records left and right. It has already amassed over $55 million in limited run. It was #2 last weekend and that was on less than 1,000 screens. They're calling it this year's breakout sleeper hit, akin to what happened with Brokeback Mountain and Little Miss Sunshine. Those played in English over there, right?
It opens wide here this weekend and we'll see how it does.

Brokeback Mountain did, but Little Miss Sunshine went totally under the radar. I hadn't even heard of it until Chris mentioned it in the FX interview. I looked it up online in January '07 and found out that the German release was in November 2006, unbeknownst to me (and probably a lot of other fellow Germans).
But you never know. I've been proven wrong with my predictions as to what's gonna show in English and what isn't. It sounds like it might be the kind of movie that the theater in Cologne might show.

I'm glad you enjoyed seeing it Tina.
I watched it again for a second time and I noticed that including credits, it clocked in at like an hour and 36 minutes. I agree with your friend Rob, I would've loved to have seen another 30-45 minutes of Will's character just doing more around the city. Maybe some flashbacks of him establishing his fortress and more searching/hunting, etc...anything-I just wanted more!!
Oh, and I read Harry Knowles review of Cloverfield and his is absolutely raving over it. A week from today, I will be at the theater for this movie! :dancing:

A week from tomorrow, I will be at the theater for Cloverfield too. And you know, you're absolutely right, more of Neville's journey would've been very cool. Director's Cut please!!!

Title: I Am Legend (IMDb)
Starring: Will Smith
Released: 18th March 2008
SRP: $34.99 (2-Disc)
Further Details:
Warner Home Video has announced 1-disc ($28.98) and 2-disc special editions ($34.99) of I Am Legend which stars Will Smith. Each will be available to own from the 18th March. The film itself will be presented in anamorphic widescreen, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track. The only extra material on the 1-disc release will be 4 animated comics (Death As a Gift, Isolation, Sacrificing the Few for the Many, and Shelter), and some DVD-ROM features. The 2-disc special edition will include all that, along with an alternate theatrical version of the film with a "controversial" ending. HD-DVD/DVD Combo and Blu-ray releases will also be available for $35.99 with all of the 2-disc features. The artwork is attached:
I wonder if the lack of extras has anything to do with the strike.
This was posted on dvdtalka nd came from tvguide.com
Another Strike Casualty — Bonus Material
The TV landscape has been decimated by the Writers Strike, and that will undoubtedly lead to some smaller-than-usual TV-DVD sets come August/September, but there are other repercussions that aren't as obvious; the lack of participation in bonus material.
Don't expect to listen to those insightful commentary tracks featuring writers and producers, or hear about the genesis of a show from the 90s; writers and producers are turning down offers from the studios (the home video divisions) to participate in bonus material. Some studios planned ahead and shot interviews before the strike, but many upcoming sets will be affected, assuming the strike continues.
I don't know about you, but I can't imagine a Lost DVD set without the participation of Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindeloff, or The Shield without Shawn Ryan. What happens to the shows that have been off the air for years and are just now getting their DVD releases? How upsetting will it be for fans hoping to hear new behind-the-scenes gossip on their favorite shows? Very upsetting.

Heck yea, I'm all over that too. From what alot of the fans of the book are saying, the theatrical ending is pretty controversial by itself. The ending is quite different from the book, actually... a lot of the movie is...but the more I see this movie, the more I enjoy it for what it is and the more I think Will Smith is THE MAN for carrying this movie almost all by himself. (I kinda already own a copy of the DVD and have seen it 5 times now)
