I've heard they are slightly better than the dvd's, but not a huge improvement. I'm guessing that would be the case with the age of the films. I saw them recently in HD on tv, and they were amazing to see. I'm sure the new film will look amazing in HD.
If only I didn't have to wait.

Here is a review of TWOK Blu-Ray in which they post examples of the differences in picture quality between the two.
Notice how dark the bridge scene is compared to the standard dvd, or the Kirk in shuttle scene where you can barely see the door behind him.

Woohoo!!! I will be buying this the day it comes out.
Nick Meyer is one of my favorite people on the planet. Not only is he responsible for some of the best of the classic Trek movies, he wrote and directed my absolute favorite movie, Time After Time --- which turned me on to Mary Steenburgen, which lead me to JoA, which is why this website exists. Heh.
I got to meet Nick and hear him lecture at the 2003 Creative Screenwriting EXPO in LA. I didn't know he was going to be there until the day before the conference when they sent out an email annoucing his addition to the schedule. It was so great to get to talk to him about how much that movie means to me. The special edition DVD had just been released and it has this great commentary track with Nick and Malcolm McDowell, and they talk a lot about Mary of course since she and Malcolm met on that movie and married the following year.
This is very exciting. Just another reason I can't wait till August!

A tip: Watch Start trek (or any other space movie) on board a cruise ship or any kind of larger boat. There was this distant humming of the ship's engine and the constant small vibration on the floor really made it feel a bit like being on a space ship. Or that's how it seems to be on many TV-series and movies.. There was even a few parts in the movie when there was fights and when the space ship shaked and rocked, the boat happened to tilt a bit more. If there would have been 3d-glasses and a bit better screen, it would have been even more awesome.

Today more details emerged about the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release for JJ Abrams Star Trek movie. Confirming our earlier reports, Paramount has announced there will be three home video sets for Star Trek (2 DVD sets & 1 Blu-ray). All three will be released on November 17th. These releases will include some interesting high-tech features — details below.
Star Trek's High-Tech Home Video Release
On November 17th, 2009 JJ Abrams Star Trek movie comes home. There will be three different home video releases:
* 1-disk DVD
* 2-disk DVD
* 3-disk Blu-ray
The 2-disk DVD and Blu-ray sets will feature a home video first with "augmented reality" packaging. Using a webcam, you can hold your packaging up to your computer and reveal a 3-D holographic tour of the new USS Enterprise. In May, an early version of this was used to promote the theatrical release of the film by Paramount International (at experience-the-enterprise.com – see video below).
Another high tech feature for the 2-disk DVD set and the Blu-ray set is providing a digital copy of the film, which you can load onto a computer or mobile device. So far Paramount has only done this for one other film (Love Guru). You can visit paramountdigitalcopy.com to learn more about how this feature works.
More details coming soon
Paramount Home Video will soon be announcing more details on the Star Trek DVD and Blu-ray sets, so look for an update from TrekMovie.com when that becomes available. You can see our previous story for early details on the Blu-ray special features, which TrekMovie has confirmed is very close to the final version.
http://trekmovie.com/2009/07/16/star-tr … -features/
A little later than I expected, but just in time for people to buy it right before Thanksgiving.
The 3-D Enterprise sounds cool, too bad I don't have a webcam.
I'm going to buy the 2-Disc DVD set.
If I owned Blu-Ray I would get it on that format.

Actually, amazon.de now lists the German release date of the DVD as Dec 31, 2009. Not sure what DVD version I'm gonna get yet.

I think when a retailer lists a release date of December 31st it likely means that they don't know the release date. But they expect it by the end of the year.
Even though this has nothing to do with this movie, I just got a really terrific deal on the 1991 Hallmark Enterprise Christmas Ornament.
This can go for well in the hundreds of dollars.
I paid just $5.00

I'm fairly certain that I saw a test screening of Time After Time about thirty ( ! ) years ago at the great old (and now gone) University theatre in Toronto. I say that I "think" it was a test screening because it was a few months before the movie actually had its so-called "World Premiere" at the Toronto Film Festival (then called the "Festival of Festivals"). I can't quite recall, but I am also fairly certain that I filled out some kind of questionnaire when the movie was over. I also love the movie a lot, and should have the DVD, but I don't (yet). I'll be buying Meyer's book for sure, and look forward to August, too, as I was born in that sultry month.
At a certain part in your life. Probably when too much of it has gone by. You will open your eyes and see yourself for who you are. Especially for everything that made you so different from all the awful normals.

We got cable in 1980 when I was 16 and my whole world busted wide open. I was already an anglophile from watching too much PBS, but with HBO I discovered so many movies and actors it was ridiculous. I used to stay up pretty much all night on the weekends, lying with a pillow and blanket on the floor of our living room watch the big ol' console TV with the volume turned way down as my parents slept. There were even nights where I'd go to bed, set my clock for some crazy movie playing only at 3:30 AM, get up and watch it, then go back to sleep until time to get up for school. This was 3 years before I got my first VCR and I was hopeless addicted.
Time After Time was one of those movies and I watched it more or less every time it came on. Caught a bunch of older Malcolm movies on cable too. I love the Lindsey Anderson trilogy. The TAT DVD is well worth it just for that commentary.
