Yep. Because people don't have enough drama in their lives.
How do the producers know that? Did they ask the people?
We need the fake drama in television shows we use to get away from our real life drama to make us feel better about how crappy our lives are.
Yeah, definitely. LOL
Very true.

I don't know why that's supposedly entertaining.
I like happy Adam and Joan, even though they didn't get a lot of airtime in the series.

I don't mind angst as long as you can still feel the love between them. It's when they had them feeling all disconnected from each other that I was bugged. But I just never thought things would go the way they did. Talk about manufactured conflict?

I couldn't agree with you more, Deb. The thing that really annoys me is the episode Trial And Error. It might be realistic for most couples but not Adam and Joan. That episode always makes me cry. The only good thing about is Chris and Amber's performances.

Grrr, I was watching Game Theory and later episodes and the Roger part bugs the crap out of me!!! Then a bunch of other things happen to the Joan & Adam relationship, I just can't take it!

Season 2 was a mine field for the Joan/Adam relationship. It seems to be that there are only a few episodes in it where they don't fight or have some kind of problem.
Wow, reading over some of my posts it makes it sound like I hate JoA. Some of the good parts were really good though. Like the end of 'Romancing the Joan' (even though I don't like what it took to get them there).

There's a lot of bad, no denying it. But there's a lot of good too. I love Shadows & Light. I've probably watched that one 20 times. There's a whole lotta cute and sweet in it, between the Duff stuff. One of the moments I love most in it is seeing Adam be so sweet and caring that he can put aside his own anger and be supportive of Joan. "I don't really matter right now," he tells her when she says she thought he was mad at her. Then two weeks later, with no warning at all, he's suddenly a despicable cad who doesn't think being in love with someone and being in a committed relationship means they kind of own your ass? Folks, there's no getting around it, that's just terrible writing.

I completely agree with you. He went from being so in love with her to cheating on her with someone he barely knew. I hardly think that the logical step.
But there are so many scenes that I love out of that season 2. Some of POV, for example. I love the conversation between Adam and Judith (although, not technically a Joan/Adam moment, but they are talking about her). And who doesn't love the end scene?

Yep, that's some great stuff, too. Even though they're fighting in a lot of that ep, there's still those wonderful scenes you mentioned. What's annoying about it though is that they talked some things out in that ep, but the problems didn't go away. They kind of kept revisiting the same stuff over and over.
And Friday Night is a great example of them not allowing happiness for more than a minute before piling on the horror.
Hey, looky there, you made "Fangirl".

Definitely there's a lot of good between the bad.
Offline
Yay! I did.
I hate all the fighting in the episode and that nothing was learned from it. And if someone told me that Friday Night was inspired by Joss Whedon's writing, I wouldn't be surprised. I do really love Friday Night, except the Adam walking out on Joan when she's with Judith. But for me he redeems himself in the end of the episode. I honestly can't imagine what it would have been like for Adam if he would have been in the room with Joan when Judith died.

That's exactly why it didn't bother me that he left the hospital. He didn't leave Joan, he just couldn't handle it. When you lose a parent like that, suddenly, it can mess you up, make you hyper-sensitive to being in hospitals and seeing people suffer.
And you're right about the Whedonesque nature of the ep. His motto was always BRING THE PAIN, after all.

I watched that episode today as well. The parts of the episodes with Roger really annoy me.

I think I should have made that more clear. I hated that he left like that after yelling at Judith, but I get why he couldn't stay. He was probably left with some bad 'ripples' from leaving like that and Joan felt like he abandoned her for awhile, when that wasn't what he meant it as. But she gets it later on, so it was all okay.

I love it when he shows up at the house and Joan's so mad at him she shoves him a couple of times. That's so perfect. She wouldn't have slapped him. That would've been too harsh. Pushing him was exactly right, a rather childish, perfectly understandable reaction. And he just absorbs it, lets her get it out and then comforts her. Because once again, it's not about him. He's putting his own feelings aside to take care of Joan. Such a fantastic scene. Like I have to tell you that. Looking at your avatar, I know you love that scene too.

Hey, wanna buy a JoA-script?

Just something I came around. I didn't even knew they sold scripts too in ebay. I really don't know crap about ebay..

We bought two scripts off another site a while back. It's really intersting to see how much was actually scripted of what we saw on the screen. But I can't say I'm all that interested in the episode The Fire And The Wood.

Sorry Mel, those are transcripts, not scripts. The difference is that the script is written by the writers of the show and transcripts are written by someone watching the ep. In other words, they're mostly fan-created. I looked at Jump and it's definitely a transcript by a fan. I have the real script for that one.

Just read a nice interview with Mary Steenburgen and they asked her about JoA...
Megan: One of my favorite roles of yours was the mom in "Joan of Arcadia."
Mary Steenburgen: Oh thank you. I loved doing that series. We were very close. That was a very close group of people. In fact we are still very close. I saw Amber (Tamblyn) just not long ago.
Megan: I think she's wonderful.
Mary Steenburgen: Um-hmm.
Megan: The chemistry between you was great, and I wonder if there is anything in particular that you would look for in another television series if you were to do one?
Mary Steenburgen: Well I will be really honest with you, that one kind of broke my heart, and it took me a while to get over that because I did not understand, you know, our ratings were not bad, and we had been pre-empted a lot.
And rather than give us time to get back up and nurture us somehow it kind of was yanked. And it was such a labor of love for all of us that was on it. I felt like it was one of the few things I have even seen on television that approached a deeply complicated idea in a really respectful way of the intelligence of the audience.
Nobody was ever talked down to. And the questions that were being taught to them and things that were being asked and that were so immense, you know...and I felt like it was such a---it was inspiring, but not from the point of view of we have got all the answers. And there was nothing ever false or saccharine about it.
And so it just to me was such a gem that when we kind of, you know, were told we were not coming back...it took me, I mean really it was like a death in the family. I took that pretty hard.
Nice to know it wasn't just the fans who mourned the loss of thise great show.
