Yeah, this is exactly what I think too. I just realized something when I was watching the news after I came home tonight. Everything is about war and murder and other bad news now. It's almost like watching the news had turned into watching a horror movie. So I don't feel the need to spend money on seeing this in the cinemas, too.

Re: Lost

Yep, you got it Anne.  The world is twisted enough.

You know, there was a time when I was fascinated with vampires and serial killers and I read all these true crime books and watched all ultra-violent these movies.  Then, one day, about 11 years ago, something in my head just clicked and I realized that I was becoming very down and depressed and angry at everyone.  And it became very clear to me that a HUGE part of that was this really dark stuff I had been feeding my head.  I just couldn't do it anymore.  I packed away all the serial killer books and a lot of the vampire stuff too --- though the Anne Rice books remain on my shelf to this day because there's so much more to them than horror.  And ever since, I've kind of stayed away from really dark, unltra-violent type stuff.  Gotta say, I've been a whole lot happier since I started feeding my head more positive things.

I'd like to keep it that way.

Re: Lost

I've also gone in for the vampire and serial killer books.  I like mysteries, psychological horror, and things that really make me think.  I've read several real-life profiler books, and wrote one epic serial-killer novel, which was a fan fic based on a really bad grade-Z horror movie.  The screenwriter contacted me via e-mail, and said he loved my novel, and it was obvious I'd done a lot more research than he had, and I'd come up with a better early childhood trauma.  I'd also made his main character likeable, and he still couldn't figure out how, but he was amazed I'd done it.  That was fun.  lol

At first, when I watched the previews for Saw, I was intrigued, but the reviews I read turned me off.  From all the various previews I've seen, it does look more like torture than a quick death.  I love the Final Destination movies, because it's fun to try to anticipate what will happen when, and how certain people will die.  The problem I find with most horror movies is that I can't work up much sympathy for the victims.  They often come up with characters who, IMO, deserve to die, or at the very least, are too stupid to live.  There are also certain images I just can't handle, and I think it's Saw II that made me go, "Oh, no, no way in hell am I watching that."  So, to each his or her own.  I loved The Sixth Sense, btw, but The Ring didn't do much for me.  Oh well.

Re: Lost

I wanted to like Final Destination because it was a Morgan and Wong movie and Kristen Cloke was in it.  I saw it all the way through once and sometimes, I'll watch it on cable till KC's character, Val Lewton dies.  I also enjoyed listening to the goofy DVD commentary by the actors, including KC.  Other than that, I had the problem of not caring for the characters and feeling depressed afterward.  I hate that.  Why the hell should I subject myself to shock and depression on purpose?  As for the second one, couldn't give a crap since Morgan and Wong didn't do it.  I wouldn't mind seeing the third one some time though because Morgan and Wong are back and a little Ryan Merriman never hurt anything.

Speaking of Morgan and Wong, I really enjoyed their take on one of the classic horror movies of my youth, Willard.  It was respectful of the original, and yet weird as hell and dead funny.  And the making-of documentary that featured a very pregnant KC was utterly priceless.  I gained all new respect for Crispin Glover.  His music video for the song, "Ben" was so nutty.

What Z-grade horror movie was your novel based on?  I might know it with my history watching that stuff.

Re: Lost

The grade-Z horror flick is called Skinner, and it starred Ted Raimi.  I think it came out about 15 years ago, something like that.  I didn't see Willard; not fond of rats.  I thought Final Destination 3 was pretty amusing.  Don't forget, it also features Kris Lemche, a.k.a. Cute Boy God.  It's also got an interactive menu so you can try to change the ending at different points in the movie, or change who lives and who dies.  That was pretty fun.

A very different, and hilarious, recent horror movie I loved was Snakes on a Plane.  At first I thought I'd never watch it, not being fond of snakes, either.  The more I saw about it, though, the more it intrigued me.  I saw a clip of Samuel Jackson on Jon Stewart's show, and the two of them were giggling like insane fanboys, so I just had to check it out.  I can't even say the name of the movie around my mother, she's that snake-phobic.  The novelization was quite good; all the characters actually had names, and one minor character's fate was different at the end of the book than the movie, and that made me happy.  big_smile

"He said: You're next."

O-kay. But, what WAS that??? The island? You know, what Locke always talks about, how the island demands a sacrifice? How the island can do things, influence things? This is just seriously weird.

And who the frickin' heck is the dude with the eye patch? This show is getting more and more convoluted.

Also, I'm not so sure about the blonde chick that's trying to get on Jack's good side. Somehow I think that video tape she showed him is just a ruse to get him to trust her and then betray him. Am I being too paranoid?

Re: Lost

Heh, I don't think there's any such thing as "too paranoid" where Lost is concerned.  I didn't tape the episode, so I can't go back and check, but someone posted that they thought he looked like the dude in the orientation video, Dr. Marvin Candle -- I think that was one of the names he used.  He was in two orientation tapes.  Someone else pointed out that in one of the other stations, maybe the Tailies' one, they'd found a glass eye.  Might belong to the same person, and got "lost," hence the patch.  Hee!

I don't trust Juliet, either, but I trust her more than Ben.

Damn, wasn't Eko enough of a sacrifice?  I'm hoping what Eko told Locke was meant as, "You (the group of you, one by one) are next, rather than Locke specifically.  I like Locke!  I've always thought of the island as some kind of living entity, though I know it doesn't really make sense.  Hm, maybe it's an ancient god or some very powerful shape-shifting being that's taken on the form of an island for purposes we don't understand, and is luring people to it for the occasional sacrifice.  Unlikely, but with this show, not all that unbelievable!

I saw Angus in Equilibrium, Spartacus, and Second Skin, which was great.  Looks like he's going to be in Saw III.  I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the first two.

I saw Saw III in the UK last night. Can't say I was very impressed. Part I was just thrillingly shocking, part II was okay, but I'm not so fond of part III. Either I just wasn't in the right mood or the movie really wasn't that good. It was basically just this creepy, dying guy coming up with creative ways to torture and kill people. I mean, that was pretty much what Saw I and II also were, but they had this certain something I can't pinpoint but thought the movie needed to work. Saw III was just  somehow pervasive slaughter that even grossed me out. I had to look away from the screen more than once, which, like, never happens. I won't go into detail, though. But I was glad I hadn't had any food shortly before I watched it.

But, to say something positive, Angus was really good in it. His character's name was Jeff and the movie centered around him completing his "task". I didn't even remember he was gonna be in it until I saw him. Took me a couple of minutes to recognize him, too. He was a totally scruffy and run down guy in pajama pants and bare feet with a five-day stubble. Not that easy to recognize at all. Not to mention he's got a really ugly wound on his cheek for the last two thirds of the movie.

And while I wasn't able to see anything on screen with Chris in it when I was in the UK, at least I got to see something with someone in it who's worked with Chris. I'd take that any day. And I saw the Just Friends DVD in the Sainsbury's where we went shopping, so I at least had two Chris moments during my business trip.

Re: Lost

"He said that if I let him live, and I helped you, that he would finally let me go home."

Wow. Quite a twist here. Again. This show was off the air for more than two months. And came back with a bang. I had almost forgotten it even existed, but now I can't wait to get back into it.

And let me get this straight: Alex is the daughter of Henry and Danielle? Or am I mixing something up here? And her boyfriend, Carl (nice coincidence, huh?), is he gonna be a regular now? If they're taking him over to the other island... I kinda miss the other cast, though. All we got to see was Jack (Matthew Fox as ruggedly attractive as ever!), Kate and Sawyer and some of The Others. (Nice and creepy comeback, Ethan!) I miss Hurley, Claire, Charlie, Jin, Sun and the rest of the gang.

So, any of you any thoughts?

Re: Lost

Alex is the daughter of Ben and Danielle, yes.  I like her.  She's cool.  And if Carl becomes a regular, I'll be in hog heaven!  Blake Bashoff is awesome!  He used to play Eric Black, this really sweet gay street kid that Maxine took under her wing and Sean ended up fostering on Judging Amy.  I just adored him.

I'm a little bored with the Jack-Kate-Sawyer as captives thing too.  Thank goodness it looks like some of that will come to an end now.  Don't know what will happen with Jack, but at least we get so see our main castaways again next week.

Blake has only  been in a couple of Lost eps so far so you wuldn't have to catch up on too much.  Glad I'm not the only one who thinks he's cool.  He and Chris could almost be cousins or something.  He's got beautiful lips too.  LOL!

Re: Lost

He's one of those actors that you see every now and then but don't really notice. At least to me, since I never watched Judging Amy. I just looked him up on IMDb, I must have seen him on WAT, Miracles and Numb3rs (unless I haven't see that episode yet). Maybe even Minority Report, though it sounds like his role in it is very small.

You don't like Minority Report? I do. A lot. Even have the DVD. Well, I dig Tom Cruise (as an actor, not a person), and I do like sci-fi if it's well done. And this movie just came together nicely, even though the ending was super-cheesy. The ending was the only thing I didn't like much about it.

Re: Lost

I liked MR too.  I wasn't trying to discourage anyone from watching it.  Dave and I saw it in the theatre.  It's not one of my favorite movies, but it's cool.  You know, I don't think I've ever seen a Spielberg movie I didn't like, but then I haven't seen every one of his films yet.  I don't mind Tom Cruise in a movie role.  As long as he keeps the nutball act out of it.  I like seeing him in regular guy roles more than cocky action heroes.  War Of The Worlds is pretty cool.  I also paid to see that in the theatre and I've watched it a couple more times on cable.  I thought Collateral was excellent.  He's been very good in a lot of stuff.  The Last Samurai is an amazing movie.  And I absolutely love Rainman and Jerry Maguire.

Why am I talking about Tom Cruise?

I don't know why you're talking about Tom Cruise, but I do love most of the movies you mentioned as well. Last Samurai, Jerry Maguire, War of the Worlds. Collateral was very cool. I've held the DVD in my hand a couple of times, thinking about buying it. If I come across it on the bargain rack some time, I'll definitely buy it.

Now, back on track: When will we see a movie that stars both Tom and Chris? Wouldn't that be interesting??

Re: Lost

Yeah, Rainman is really cool, I love that one too. The other movies, well. Didn't like the Samurai movie that much, but I don't think TC is the main reason here. Jerry Maguire was kind of okay. But I wasn't really interesting in the other movies (War of the Worlds, Collateral), so I didn't watch them. The only movies where I actually "like" Tom Cruise are Rainman and The Firm. That movie I watched because it was one of my favorite John Grisham books but of course the book is much better than the movie.

I honestly hope that Chris will never to a movie that co-stars Tom Cruise. I can't stand that guy. I never could. Except maybe for those two movies I mentioned. But that's it.
More important question: I just watched the Pilot episode of Miracles. Should I watch another one now? I actually wanted to watch Live On Mars on TV, but my mom wouldn't let me, because she wanted to watch some other stupid film and now she's sleeping on the couch ... ah well, I'll just watch another Miracles Episode.

Hey Tina, guess what? I started watching Lost again! Cool, huh? LOL
Well, actually I have to stop for today now because I just finished watching the two pilot episodes and now there is something wrong with the sound on episode 3, so I will try tomorrow if it works better with the DVD player. I can't do that now because my mom watches something on TV right now.
The good thing is, I was indeed able to understand much better than when I watched it for the first time. That's why I wanted to go on with a few more episodes now, but I have to wait until tomorrow. Thank God my mom will be away all day, so I can use the whole day to watch Lost. LOL

Okay, I got the sound problem fixed so far. It still does not work on the DVD player, but I figured out that I just have to disconnect the (newly-installed) microphone and then it's at least working when I turn the speakers to the fullest. But at least it works, so it's fine with me. I'm currently watching Ep 4.

Okay, finished watching the first DVD. The sound problem didn't go away fully, but it's not that the episodes are completely unwatchable. There's something wrong with episode 7 actually, the sound gets really quiet at a few points but I think I was still able to understand the story.
Charlie is my favorite so far. Not because of the hoodies (LOL), I also like his British accent. wink
