According to the above site Trek made 25 million on Friday for a total so far of 32 million.

72-75 million is likely for the weekend box office.

All I was trying to say is that Trek movies have sort of been lacking in the "action" area quite a lot. Even when they had action it was all too brief.

I've always felt in away that Trek films should have more action than they did. Something they've always lacked, so I'm glad that this one upped the ante.

Don't want to post any potential spoilerish material, but I think his reasons are much more understandable than what's been shown for villains in previous Trek films. Most of the Trek films used Klingons as the main villain and most of them were never really given a reason other than they simply hated the Federation or Kirk. Only II, Generations and perhaps Insurrection & Nemesis gave the villain any real reason for what they were doing.

Perhaps you can answer some questions, but don't post any spoiler material if possible.
1. How is the acting? Can go actor by actor.
2. How are the visual effects?
3. Any real "neat/cool" scenes? Try and be as vague as possible.
4. Any cool shots of the Enterprise?
5. Lens flare - overused - too much?
6. Is it easy to follow the action?
7. How much is Nimoy in it?

#180 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 08 May 09 :: 10:22

Regarding action in films.

It's something that's been somewhat lacking in Trek films.

Now this could all be due to budget restraints for the previous films.

1. The Motion Picture: Really no action to speak of. Well except for some photon torpedoes being fired at V'Ger or the plasma weapon from V'Ger, there really is no action in it.
2. Khan: OK a little more action. But no really spectacular space battles. The final battle between the Enterprise and the Reliant plays much more like a scene from an old WWII submarine vs. a destroyer film.
3. Search for Spock: A little bit of action. However the battle between the Enterprise & the Bird of Prey is almost over before it even begins. A few shots between them and it's over. Fairly good battle between Kirk & the Klingon.
4. Voyage Home: No real villain in this film. Just an alien probe screwing up Earth's weather.
5. Final Frontier: I can't even remember the action scenes from this film, well except for them firing a torpedo at "God".
6. Undiscovered Country: Fairly good final space battle between the Enterprise and Chang, but again plays similar to a submarine movie.
7. Generations: Way too short of a battle between the Enterprise-D and the Bird of Prey. A few shots and the Enterprise is disabled and crashes. Final fight with Kirk, Picard & Soran on the hilltop was ok.
8. First Contact: OK, the Borg come to Earth and all Earth throws in defense is a hand-full of ships and the battle lasts only a few minutes before they travel back in time. Should have been longer. After that it's basically just them fighting the Borg with hand phasers and such.
9. Insurrection: I don't really recall too much about the action scenes.
10. Nemesis: OK the dune buggy scene was somewhat laughable, but the final battle between the Enterprise-D with help from other Romulan Ships battling the other Romulan ship may be the best space battle in any of the Trek films.

So out of 10 films, I think only 3 of them has any sort of memorable action scenes. II, VI and Nemesis.

Now I know this may be a simplistic look at what Trek is about, but I've always looked at it as the military in the future. With the Enterprise being a battleship. I think any military based film should have a lot of action in it.

Not to pick on Ebert, but I can't believe that he gave 3 stars (and a better review) to Next Day Air.

That film is being slammed fairly hard right now by the critics, which from what I've seen looks deserved.
But not surprising since years ago he gave one of the few positive reviews for the remake of The Honeymooners.

#182 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 08 May 09 :: 01:17

Now usually I don't care about a movies box office, but in this case I am because it's very important because further movies depends on this films success.

Box office predictions are trickling in.

Paramount insiders are saying 50-60

Other sites are saying 65 to as high as 79 when including the Thursday showings.

Total domestic predictions are from 150 to as high as 220 or so.

The unknown is the foreign take because Trek has never really been too big outside of the U.S.

#183 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 07 May 09 :: 08:17

As of right now it has a 95% rating on Rottentomatoes.com. 70 positive reviews out of 74. 4 negative.

One of the negatives came from Ebert.
But he hasn't liked the majority of them anyways, only giving positives to II, IV and First Contact.

Perhaps it's just me, but his nitpicking of the "science" aspects makes little sense to me.

ok, can't copy & paste off his site.

But he mentions that time travel is impossible.
However he liked the two previous movies that involved time travel, IV and First Contact.

Then he rags on warp speed and saying that it's just a convenience for the screenwriters so that they can "push a button and zap to the next scene". And that it "prevents any sense of wonder at the immensity of space".

Where in the world has he been for the past 40 plus years. Warp speed has been a staple of Trek from the very first episode. Plus it's also used in the Star Wars films too. And I'm sure many other science fiction films.

Does he really think that either every thing should only happen within the orbit of Earth or that viewers which to sit through a long and boring stretch of film watching them travel through space to another planet? Just so that he can watch a film that shows the wonder and immensity of space, viewers would be bored out of their minds.

He's in the minority on this one.

Nope, don't shop at ethnic stores.

I shop at Meijer & Food4less (Kroger) for groceries.

#185 Re: Off Topic Stuff » Randomness » 05 May 09 :: 22:07

I've never seen Coke or Pepsi w/ sugar before up here in the spring.

And I buy pop every week.

#186 Re: Off Topic Stuff » Randomness » 05 May 09 :: 21:06

Bought a bottle of Pepsi Throwback.
Instead of sweetened with corn syrup, it's the way they did it decades ago. With real sugar.

pepsi-throwback.jpg

It doesn't leave that aftertaste in your mouth like regular pop.
It tastes "lighter".

If I can find it in a 24 pack I'll buy it.

#188 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 04 May 09 :: 14:58

Since the summer movie season has begun, I thought we might discuss thoughts on box office potential.

Wolverine opened up to 87 million, despite the workprint leak and fairly bad reviews.

I would expect that WOM won't be to kind to the film and will likely have at least a 56% drop next week. Perhaps even larger than that.

Whereas Star Trek is getting rave reviews so far. But it's opening at around 500 locations less than Wolverine did.
So I expect a lower opening box office than Wolverine had.
I think around 80 million or so.

I'm not hearing much buzz about Angels & Demons, so I think that will open rather poorly. Perhaps in the 35 million range.

Treks real competition will be Terminator Salvation, of course a sci-fi film.
That should open higher than Wolverine did.

With the poor reviews & bad worm of mouth on Wolverine and no real competition for two weeks Trek could remain #1 for two weeks straight.

I think Trek will have legs and in the long run make more than Wolverine will.

I don't really see any must see films for most of the month of June, so any of the May films that have legs will continue to rank in the money. Well until Transformers 2 opens, which I think will be the largest opening take of the summer and very likely will be the number one film of the summer.

#189 Re: Square Eyes » Post your recent DVD purchases » 04 May 09 :: 14:41

I think First Contact is the best of the Next Gen. films.

If I had to put the Next Gen. Trek films in order from best to worst.

1. First Contact
2. Nemesis
3. Generations
4. Insurrection.

Is Nemesis 1 or 2 discs?
I own the Collector's Edition, which is 2 discs, and it's loaded with extras.

Luckily I was able to get all 10 Trek film Collector's Editions before they went OOP. So I could have a marathon any time I want to.

#190 Re: Square Eyes » Post your recent DVD purchases » 04 May 09 :: 08:04

Picked up over the weekend.

Fairly bland cover for Nemesis.
Even though it flopped, I still think Nemesis is actually quite good.
I think it's better than Insurrection or Final Frontier.
The final space battle is very good, especially like when the Romulan ship tumbles after being hit.

#191 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 01 May 09 :: 13:55

My thoughts on the Star Trek film since I first heard about it.

First I didn't like the idea at all.
Then when I started to see whom they cast, I started to like it even less.
And then when they debuted the revised Enterprise I had very mixed feelings.

But when I started to see stills my thoughts started to sway the other way.
And then when I started to see the Trailers/TV Spots I really started to like what I was seeing.

Now about 20 years ago if they would have done this I would have been 100% against it, but now I am more accepting.

More accepting because they didn't do what ruined the Lost in Space movie.
In that their costumes was completely different, whereas in Star Trek they kept the basic style the same.
In LOS they just completely redesigned the Jupiter II into something that didn't even look like the original, whereas in Star Trek the basic form is there. It doesn't look like a Star Destroyer or from Star Trek - the Voyager.
The Enterprise bridge keeps the basic layout of the original Enterprise bridge, but just lights it up quite a bit.
And in LOS they just got rid of the classic robot design into something that looked rather stupid.

About the only thing that the LOS movie got right is the robot voice, but other than that it's LOS in name only.

As far as I can tell the new Star Trek film is Star Trek.

#192 Re: Square Eyes » Star Trek (2008 movie) » 30 Apr 09 :: 18:09

I DVD Recorded the JJ Abrams interview on Jimmy Kimmel last night.

They showed a clip I haven't seen before.

They showed the shuttle leaving the Enterprise (which is a cool shot) and aboard are They are going to sky jump in an attempt to destroy the planet destroying weapon below. In case you're wondering why they don't beam down there is a bit of dialogue saying that they won't be able to beam them back unless they stop the weapon.

I'm guessing too much interference or something like that prevents proper operation of the transporter.

I'm recording as many tv spots, interviews and reviews I come across.

Completed my 3.75 " figures today.

Bought Nero & Sulu.

I've already spent over $120 on toys and that doesn't include all of the Kellogg's cereals and products to get the badges and plates(that I still need to send off for).

The 6 inch figures will cost about $90 plus about $55 for the Bridge & Transporter sets.

Then beginning next week I'll be going to Burger King to get the glasses & toys too.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Timothy Olyphant will star in FX's drama pilot that is based on the Elmore Leonard short story Fire in the Hole.

The currently untitled project follows U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Olyphant) when he returns to his hometown in Kentucky.

"He has a certain jaggedness, but he also loves his job," said creator/exec producer Graham Yost. "He is like an anachronism: He wears a hat, cowboy boots and a holster on his hip. It's a little bit like he was born 100 years too late."

As Yost gets ready for end-of-May start date on the pilot, which will be directed by Michael Dinner, Yost recently received an endorsement from Leonard himself.

"One of the great thrills was getting to speak to Elmore a couple of weeks ago," Yost stated. "He said he liked my adaptation a lot."

Wolverine & Star Trek Outselling Iron Man In Ticket Sales

Remember last year when a then relatively unknown Marvel superhero got his big screen debut? He goes by the alias Iron Man and he earned nearly $100 million at the box-office in his opening weekend.

If ticket pre-sales are any indicator, it's possible that Wolverine in his solo spin-off origin film may beat Iron Man's opening weekend. It doesn't seem like that leaked, unfinished version of X-Men Origins: Wolverine is hampering pre-sales as MovieTickets.com is reporting that it's currently outselling Iron Man 3-to-1 in ticket sales in the same time frame prior to release.

Surprised? Impressed? Well, that's not all! J.J. Abrams franchise-saving Star Trek is doing even better than that despite the fact it is being released a week later. Below is the report detailing the advanced ticket numbers:

    X-MEN OUTSELLING IRON MAN

    As of Wednesday, MovieTickets.com is reporting that "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" is currently outpacing ticket sales for "Iron Man" 3-to-1 at the same point in the sales cycle (nine days prior to the film's release).

    Both films boast release dates during the first weekend in May during the last two years. "X-Men" releases Friday, May 1, 2009. "Iron Man" released in 2008 on Friday, May 2."

    STAR TREK OUTSELLING X-MEN

    Despite releasing a week later than "X-Men," "Star Trek" has already sold 25% more advance tickets at MovieTickets.com than "X-Men."

It seems that the economy sure isn't affecting the movie business negatively this summer, and that's a good thing considering the plethora of major summer tent-pole films we'll be seeing this year.

What do you think of the pre-ticket sales numbers? Do you think they're a strong indicator of what we'll see opening weekend in terms of box-office sales? And, more importantly, will you be seeing these two movies? I know I will.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine opens next Friday, May 1 2009. Star Trek hits theaters the following weekend on May 8th with 7:00pm screenings on May 7th

OK, I've read that he needs glasses because he's near-sighted.

First. He's got tons of money - couldn't he have gotten better style of glasses.

Second. What about contact lenses?
Unless he can't - perhaps his eyes are too sensitive.
