Post your recent DVD purchases

I got the Predator: 2 disc Widescreen Edition. Seems that for some reason most stores are only carrying the new 1 disc Lenticular cover edition. Paid about $15 for it. Brand New from Meijer.

Then I got these 2 seasons of The Simpsons at a garage sale for $10 each. Both in perfect condition.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

Wicked, Illinois.  I got sucked into a a marathon of Inside The Actor's Studio on Bravo today and one of the ones I saw was with the Simpsons cast.  This was like the third time I've seen it.  Have you seen that one?  It's great.  Everyone is so funny.  But what's with Julie Kavner leaving the stage?  I've never been able to find out what that was all about.

And one of my heroes, Ruben Blades, is in Predator 2.  smile

PS: Have you seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang?  I'm watching it now.  It's pretty terrific.

I actually have Kiss Kiss Bang Bang on DVD, someone copied it for me. I've not had the urge to watch it, but if you say it's good, maybe I should take a look after all.

Just got back from Circuit City and picked these up for $4.99 each.

Figures that Circuit City would have had Predator on sale for $6.99 this week. Oh well, it's only a few bucks and I wanted it for awhile.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

My most recent DVD purchases haven't been new movies, I'm afraid.  I bought "Coming Home", "Body Heat", and "The Big Chill".  CH didn't have many extras, but it was a bargain.  I guess everything is if you can wait 30 years.;)  Jane Fonda, Jon Voight, and Bruce Dern were fantastic in this movie.  Probably the best work of their careers.  Also turning in great performances were Penelope Milford (who I haven't seen in anything since she played the dippy, new-agey guidance counselor in "Heathers") and Robert (Revenge of the Nerds) Carradine.  Oy.  Don't get me wrong.  I love crazy, goofy comedies.  But this guy has real range.  I wish he'd gotten a chance to show it off more.

I'm kinda disappointed in "The Big Chill", even though I love this movie.  This was an anniversary edition and, though there were a lot of great extras, there was one I wanted that they didn't have.  If you don't know the story, it's about 7 college friends who come together 15 years later for the funeral of a friend, who has committed suicide.  Initially, they had shot nearly an hour of scenes with all of them together in college.  The college scenes were cut, probably for length.  The movie doesn't need them, but I would've liked to see them.  Kevin Costner played the dead friend and his part is completely cut, except for flashes of his wrists and hairline as his body is prepared for burial.  I'd really liked to have seen the early scenes.  Not only for Costner's work, but to see if Mary Kay Place, Glenn Close, and Jobeth Williams could successfully play 20-somethings.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

Yeah, definitely check out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.  It's a hoot and a half.  Great dialog, crazy storyline, wonderful performances.  I was truly entertained.

Great movies, Carol.  I was reading this list of someone's hundred greatest directors at work on Friday and I learned something I didn't know.  Hal Ashby, director of one of my all time favorite movies, Harold & Maude, also directed Coming Home.  Wow.  Of course I haven't seen Coming Home in years.  I was fascinated with it when I was in my late teens.  It used to run on cable a lot.  Great, great movie.  And I'm a big fan of Bobby Carradine too!  Keith as well.  He's on Dexter this season.  smile

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

I loooove "Harold and Maude".  So funny and touching.  Just wonderful.  I still laugh hysterically when Harold's uncle pulls that string so that his starched sleeve where his arm used to be snaps into a salute.  I play Cat Stevens' "Don't Be Shy" on Rhapsody all the time because it takes me back to H&M.

I remember a scene in "Six Feet Under" when Claire is touring that art college.  She's already looked the place over and kind of likes it.  Then, as she goes to get into her car to leave, she sees another hearse in the parking lot.  It was like, "Awww!  Claire's found her people.  Who knew Claire had people?"  I always wondered if Bud Cort was going to LAC Arts.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

I used to drive to downtown Atlanta at least once a year to go to the old revival house called The Rhodes Theatre to see Harold & Maude on a double bill with Alan Bates and Genevieve Boujold in King Of Hearts.  Good times.  And yes, of course, I am a huge Cat Stevens fan too.  I just recently bought the Magikat DVD.

Wow, it's nice to have a grown-up movie buff to talk to who gets my references, Carol.  No offense to anyone else intended.

Alan Bates!  Yum. Sigh.:drool::drool::drool:

I somehow ended up with an extra copy of the H&M DVD.  If you don't have it, you can have one of mine.

EDIT:  Yikes!  I'm a horndog.

  I don't mind being a horndog, Laura.  (And, indeed, we're all horndogs under the skin).  I was just embarrassed because at the precise moment I became one, I was getting all hot under the collar for a man I figured had to be around 75.

I just looked him up, though.  Alan Bates isn't 75.  He's dead.:crying:  He was a wonderful actor and, back in the day, he was beautiful.  I even loved him in "The Rose" and he played a total jerk in that.  And in "Women in Love" and "An Unmarried Woman" be was wonderful.:applause:

Obscure Alan Bates trivia:  (for those of you who occasionally write about badminton wink) He was in a movie in 1991 called "Shuttlecock".  Apparently it was never released theatrically, and was only shown on UK television.  The rewiew on IMDB sounds good, though.

I'll get H&M in the mail sometime this week.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

LOL!  Yeah, Alan Bates was a hottie in his day.  The Rose was the first time I remember seeing him and I fell in love.  Around that same time I also fell in love with the former Mr. Mary Steenburges, Malcolm McDowell --- because of his movie with Mary, Time After Time.  So consequently my favorite Alan Bates movie is also one of my favorite Malcolm movies, Royal Flash.  They were both dead sessy in that movie.

Nope, no horndogginess here.

I could never get into Malcolm McDowell because the first movie of his I ever saw was Clockwork Orange.  I've been a fan of her's since "Melvin and Howard" and I also loved Time After Time.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

I saw Time After Time first, so I was always able to see him as sweet and heroic, even after Clockwork (and gulp, Caligula).  He did a wonderful movie with Carol Burnett and George Segall when he was older where you watch his curmudgeonly character melt into a sweetheart because of a child.  And I have some interviews on tape with Mac & Mary together back in they day.  They were so adorable and so in love.  Have you seen their children?  They're so beautiful.  All grown up and trying to break into the business.

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

I've seen pictures of Lilly.  She is beautiful!  I wondered if a certain ex-nun character was named Lilly because it's Mary Steenbergen's daughter's name.

(I briefly wondered the same thing about Amber Tamblyn's mother, Bonnie.  But then I shuddered and tried to think of something else, quickly!)

And speaking of shuddering:  Caligula!

Re: Post your recent DVD purchases

Yeah, I'm betting those names are directly related to the loved ones of the actors.  That happens all the time on TV.  In-jokes, laziness on the part of writers, etc.  We've got a picture of Charlie McDowell here somewhere.  He looks just like Malcolm.  Lily looks like Mary with blonde hair and blue eyes.  She was in that FX show about the Iraq War.  If I'd know that, I might've given the show a chance.

I saw them in person when they were little.  Mary just happened to be on an airplane with my friend Isabel when she came to Atlanta for a visit.  It was so weird.  She gets off the plane and tells me in hushed tones that Mary's right behind her.  I had alread met Mary once before in 1983 when she was in Atlanta to promote Romantic Comedy.  I was tempted to go speak to her, but I thought it might be rude with the kids there.

Yeah, you can see the resemblance between Charlie and his dad.

I didn't really meet her but once at a taping of Politically Incorrect, Mary Steenbergen was one of the panelists.  After the taping she stayed and shook hands and posed for pictures with any audience who stayed around to see her.  All the other panelists (including Bill Maher) high-tailed it right out of there.  REALLY nice lady!

Oh, she's the sweetest.  Absolute class, that woman.  Thank goodness I've always been such a fan or I wouldn't be sitting here on this board right now.  It might not even exist.  She's the reason I gave JoA a chance in the first place.  Of course I loved it right away.  And then Chris became the reason for my obsession with it.  big_smile

The fact that they had such amazing chemistry together just really made the show for me.
