Just watched it on DVD. Awwww, what a nice little movie. Definite tear-jerking material, at least for me. Because, yes, I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried mutliple times. Not like a baby, but enough to feel good about it. Because it means it moved me. I do like Sandra Bullock (and I think she looked stunning in this one) and I love Keanu Reeves. And I totally dig the beefier and tously-haired look he had going. Hmmmmm. Wish Chris would look like this at--what? 40?
And, Deb? What's wrong with Keanu's eyebrows? Granted, they don't come remotely close to Chris's beauties, but they don't look weird to me. They're pretty normal. I've seen much worse.
Anyways, just wanted to share that I've been looking forward to watching a movie that really moved me and made me get lost in it for a while now. Haven't seen anything like that in the theater or on DVD for ages. While I have to say it's not exactly my all time favorite movie, I still absolutely enjoyed watching it and diving into it.
If you're a guy, though: Attention! Chick-flick potential.

I looooooove that movie! I watched it in the theaters last summer, because I like Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves too. But I didn't pay that much attention to his eyebrows actually. Maybe I should do that next time. LOL That movie is definitely on my DVDs-to-by-List.
I like the movie because it sort of reminded me of the book, The Timetraveller's Wife, although the story is a little different. But it's still a movie I can watch once in a while. It's not too cheesy. Kinda like Must Love Dogs, which is one of my favorite John Cusack movies, as you know. And that is why I have to say, I'd rather like Chris looking like JC in his 40ies than KR, but actually I wouldn't mind that either. Ah well, he still has some time until then.

Look at KR's eyebrows in some old movie, like my fave Point Break. Long, arched, gorgeous. Look at them now, thin, cut in half, weird. No contest. I'm telling you, they never grew back right after he shaved them off for the Matrix movies.
And here we have yet another rom com that turns on a supernatural plot. Yawn. Wake me when someone writes something in which the characters live in the same world and they're both alive. That is a rare commodity, indeed. I can name only a few examples in recent years --- Fever Pitch and Prime were both flat-out wonderful, sweet, hilarious and very romantic movies. Must Love Dogs qualifies. More of these, fewer ghosts and time travel please.

I did like this movie, thought it was quite sweet, and I enjoyed both Sandra and Keanu in it, although I thought it was a bit slow.
Sisterdebmac- I love Fever Pitch!

If I may just comment on the whole supernatural/time travel thing aspect with regard to The Lake House. I knew before I watched it that it involved something like that, but I didn't know how exactly. Deb, have you seen the movie? You were complaining that you'd like to see a romantic movie without any of that supernatural stuff. Well, let me tell you, this movie was not at all about that aspect. Yes, it revolved all around the fact that these two weren't living in the same time, but there was nothing science fiction- or mystery-like about it at all.
In fact, I found the whole time travel thing quite interesting and refreshing. And it's not like any person traveled in time. It was only the letters that they exchanged that did. Nothing like wormholes and weird time travel effects or anything. I found it was all really tasteful and subtle. Nothing about mind-twisting time changing effects, no attempt to scientifically explain anything here. In fact, there was no science involved, other than the fact that Alex (Sandra Bullock) was a doctor. To me, it was a very straightforward romantic movie, I didn't feel like the supernatural aspect added anything "weird" to it at all. If you haven't seen the movie yet, Deb, you might just want to give it a chance. You know, actually you saying that the time travel aspect takes something away from the romance part in this movie is a little like saying the fact that Phatom Menace sucked must mean that Fanboys is gonna suck.
I'll leave you ponder that.
Oh, and The Lake House is not a romantic comedy. Nothing comedic about it at all. Pure drama and romance.

Yeah, that's why I love that movie too. I completely agree, that time travel aspect does not take anything away from the movie. The thing with the letters just happens, like I'd say.

They live in separate times and they fall in love and can't be together. I don't care if it's because of a rip in the time/space continuum or what. It's manufactured conflict and I'm just sick of that stuff.
I have zero interest in this movie. Sorry.
And saying that I don't want to see it for that reason is nothing like trolling the IMDb board spewing crap about it. It just doesn't interest me.
Give me real conflict or nothing.

Hey, your choice. If this was manufactured conflict, it was certainly well done and very interesting. I don't agree, though. Then almost every storyline is manufactured conflict. Because in every love story, there's obstacles. If there wasn't conflict, it wouldn't be interesting. But we've had this discussion before, I don't really wanna get into it again.
You don't have to watch the movie if you don't want to. I have tons of movies where people say it's a great movie that I have zero interest in.

Yeah, same here. But if there wouldn't be different tastes by different people, the world would be boring, right?

No, you missed my point. My point is that I would like to see a real romantic comedy or drama grounded in the everyday with the kind of conflict we all go through. Not something where the conflict is we live two years apart. That's what's manufactured.
As a screenwriter, I can't believe you would imagine that I want stories with NO conflict. Please. I want stories with REAL conflict.
Let's take the two movies I mentioned, Fever Pitch and Prime:
In Fever Pitch, two very adorable people who are otherwise compatible fall in love but are driven apart by the guy's relentlesss, over-the-top obsession with his favorite baseball team. That kind of thing happens everyday. Ask the woman who's husband talked her into naming their child ESPN after his favorite sports channel on TV.
In Prime, two very adorable otherwise compatible people fall in love but are driven apart by a ten year age disparity, religious differences and the fact that his meddling mother happens to be her shrink. All of these conflicts are perfectly reasonable.
Look, it would be different if we got realistic romances in equal measure with romantic fantasies, but we don't. The last realistic romantic drama I remember is The Notebook and that was four years ago. The trend is very much toward fantasy these days. And that scares me. As a writer of DRAMA, I cannot sell a script with real conflict. But if one of my characters was a damn ghost or something, I'd probably be a millionaire by now. What a friggin' joke.
Does that make any sense?

Yeah. Guess you start seeing things differently when you know as much about screenwriting as you do, Deb. I just watch a movie and decide whether I like it or not. And I did like this one, manufactured conflict or not.

Casting helps too. I saw Just Like Heaven and 13 Going On 30 in the theatre because I love Mark Ruffalo and he looked adorable in the trailers for both. I'm not immune to romantic fantasty. Would I dig JoA if I was? I'm just very, very picky about which ones I bother with because the genre is so over-exhausted and I'd much rather have the real thing. Maybe I'm just old.
The best romance I've seen in many years is Something's Gotta Give. It's smart and funny and grounded and full of heart. And Keanu's eyebrows didn't bother me so much in this one. Maybe it's because his hair was a nice length and it all balanced out somehow. I would recommend this movie to anyone --- even if you don't think you'd like a movie about older folks falling in love, or you're not particularly fond of Jack Nicholson like me. I caught it on cable by accident and I now own the DVD. I'd like to say that I wish they'd make more movies like this, but the fact is if the did, Hollywood would find a way ruin the whole thing.

Well, for me the conflict in The Lake House isn't manifactured. The thing with the letters travelling in time just happens, and that's what I love about the movie. But I am completely okay if you can't agree with me. We don't need to like the same movies.

I think what Deb was trying to say is that the pure fact that the movie is based on a relationship that can't work is manufactured conflict. Because these people get to know each other in times that are two years apart. Like building the main movie plot on something that you just know will only cause trouble. I can kinda see that, but I still think it was a neat idea. And for me it worked too.

Yeah, whatever. Did you see Kate and Leopold? I think that's a very similar story. Also about time-travelling. Plus I read The Timetraveller's Wife, which is such a lovely book. And its story worked for me too, so maybe this is why I loved The Lake House.
And just for the record, I do love Just Like Heaven, too. I mean, I wouldn't compare it to The Lake House, but I just love both movies. They have both a great cast and good stories. Not too cheesy for lovemovies. Because what I really hate about love movies is the cheesiness in some of them. But I don't see cheesiness in The Lake House or Just Like Heaven.

All I'm saying is I'm sick of the fact that Hollywood thinks we can only handle love stories if they are based in some fantasy world. It's like they're talking down to us. I hate that.

Here you go, just what you were waiting for:
Rubin rewriting 'Time'
Sci-fi romance to be directed by Schwentke
By DAVE MCNARYNew Line has tapped Bruce Joel Rubin to rewrite sci-fi romance "The Time Traveler's Wife," to be directed by Robert Schwentke.
"Wife," produced by Brad Pitt via his Plan B shingle and Nick Wechsler, has been in development at New Line since 2003, when the minimajor acquired feature rights to Audrey Niffenegger's novel. "Wife," which hadn't been published when the deal was made, went on to become a bestseller.
Novel centers on a Chicago librarian with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, brought on by stress and bad memories. He meets and falls in love with a teenage heiress, but the couple's often out of sync because of his time traveling.
Rubin won an Oscar for scripting "Ghost"; other credits include "Stuart Little 2" and "Deep Impact."

I haven't read the book, but the two-line summary doesn't exactly strike me as something I'd want to be first in the ticket line in the theater for. For me I guess it's more about the overall impression than about genre. I don't mind a romantic drama involving fantasy or sci-fi aspects if the story itself works. But I'd have to know more about this movie before I'm saying that it's something I'd watch or wouldn't watch. A great book doesn't always equal a great movie. I think The Neverending Story proved that point quite strikingly. At least it's the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of a movie adaptation of a book that sucked big time. The movie, I mean, not the book.

Agreed. I don't know if I'm going to watch The Timetravelles's Wife in the theatres, I read the book and now I have certain pictures of all the characters in my head, so I don't want to have dem destroyed by Brad Pitt. Because I didn't imagine Henry looking like Brad Pitt. LOL But it's a lovely story for a book and I really enjoyed reading it.

OK, this movie doesn't suck after all. It's really corny, but sweet. But Keanu's eyebrows are still messed up. And so is his upper lip. Poor guy. Battle scars. I still wish he was gonna play Billy Jack in the remake that seems to have fallen through. Normally, I LOATHE remakes, of course. But I could totally see him in that role. I don't care what anybody says.

Sandra Bullock is one of my favorite actresses, but I didn't really like "The Lake House." I thought "Premonition" was better and wasn't too predictable.
Joan: "Wow. I always thought you'd hate me if I was a cheerleader."
Adam: "No way. Why?
Joan: "Because we're subdefectives and it'd be like deserting the army or something."
