Re: The Education Of Charlie Banks

Yes, they did rip off Dazed & Confused.  I was especially annoyed by the chick lighting the lighter and moving it side to side while watching the flame --- exactly as Mila Jovovich did in D&C.

Alpha Dog is actually an excellent movie.  Yes, some of the kids act like little white wannabe ganstas.  But that's not "the point" of the movie.  The point of the movie is that because these kids parents let them all run completely wild, one of them ends up dead.  It's a very powerful climax, brutally rendered onscreen.  And it will gut you emotionally if you think about how that's a real boy that died that way --- for no reason.

Chris turns in a wonderful performance.  He's just a little stoner skater dude who falls in with the wrong crowd.  He's not one of the wannabe gangstas.  He just wants to get high and laid, not necessarily in that order.  He has a great character arc.  He goes from goofy and outgoing to terrifed and closed-up at the end.  Many people have said that he made them cry.

Give it a chance sometime.  Stick with it at least until they kidnap the kid.  If you're not hooked by then, maybe it's not the movie for you.  If you make it that far, stick with it till Chris shows up.  Once he's around, you might even start to enjoy the movie.  But be prepared for a gutwrenching conclusion.  This is not some light little trifle of a movie.  It packs a wallop.

Or Jason Ritter.  He's apparently the only actor in the movie.

I never got to pre-book my copy because of being broke.  I'm gonna call around and see if I can find a Best Buy that has it in stock and try to buy it today since it's payday.

Re: The Education Of Charlie Banks

Well, I saw this film today.  It is really pretty good.  I'm not going to put in any spoilers so feel free to read on.  It goes a little slow, but the overall story works very well.  Be aware that Jason Ritter really steals the movie.  He has a very interesting character and does a lot with it.

Chris is really excellent in what is really a supporting role (in all the meanings, smaller part, yet important to the plot).  And as far as Chris watching goes, you get to see him with some serious 70s hair, and a few scenes in his tidy whities.  Didn't do anything for me, but I am sure I am in the minority on this board.

Overall, it is worth seeing, and I will say more once it has been more widely seen.

Re: The Education Of Charlie Banks

OK, I watched the featurette first.  No Chris.  But I had to stop the movie in the opening credits to give a shout-out to whoever chose the great Alan Parsons Project song, Wouldn't Wanna Be Like You to open the movie with.  I'm a HUGE Parsons fan and that song is utterly perfect.

Re: The Education Of Charlie Banks

I officially LOVE this movie. Jason indeed rocked the screen and Chris was wonderful too.  There's so much rapid-fire dialog that I'll need to see it a few more times to fully absorb it all.  I found it completely engrossing.  But maybe that's because of the casting.  It really is everything, you know?  And this cast is uniformly excellent.  We already knew what Jason, Jesse and Chris could do going in.  And our faith is rewarded.  It's really a cut above average for an indie, a first feature, and just in general.  Everyone involved should be proud.

Re: The Education Of Charlie Banks

So I watched the movie last night (and I mean "night" because I finished at 2.30 in the morning!). So far I can agree with Deb, everyone did indeed do a great job (I have to say especially Jason Ritter, but Chris and Jesse were good, too) and it's a really great movie (there was just one little thing that was bugging me), but I think I need to watch it another time to be able to write a full review of it. The good thing was (for me, because I still have issues with my English sometimes, as you know), I think I was able to understand pretty good, which I was a little worried about at first, but well, I just learned that practice helps a lot. wink

Re: The Education Of Charlie Banks

Do you guys think Mick beat up on people because he was a repressed homosexual?  Just like on the Alpha Dog MB on IMDb, some guy is making a case that everything Mick did was covering up the fact that he had it bad for Charlie.  Yeah, and Pete didn't die in The Invisible.  And Linus didn't really have cancer, it was just a joke, and he didn't die.  Man, people really do read the weirdest shit into the movies they watch, don't they?

I was just over there and read that post about Mick being a repressed homosexual.  I don't have an account over there but what I wanted to say was that the one scene he mentions about Mick smelling Charlie's clothes in incorrect.  Mick is actually smelling the clothes that Leo gave him just before at the poker game.  He actually smells them and rubs it against his cheek so he is admiring them not repressing homosexuality.  I think that the guy is seeing something in himself there.

Clothes do make the man, naked people have little or no influence in society.

Re: The Education Of Charlie Banks

Yeah, I thought those were the clothes Leo gave him.  I took him sniffing them as making sure they didn't have someone else's stench on them.  And rubbing them against his face was definitely admiring nicer clothes than he's ever had before.  Thanks for the confirmation.  I want to watch it again, I just haven't had time.

This guy is just like the one on the Alpha Dog board who found all kinds of "proof" in the movie that Johnny was gay.  I think some people just really do project whatever they want to see into movies and shows.  If the guy really thinks that, or it gives him a happy, he should just write some super-smutty slash fic and be done with it.
