Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

It's been an EXTREMELY long time since I've posted anything on here.  But last night I finally got to see the movie Infestation on Syfy and I thought it was pretty good.  It was really funny and I thought Chris did a good job in it.  The ending was really weird, though.  It kept you hanging and thinking about what they saw.  I'm guessing they left it like that because there's going to be a second movie?  Or maybe they just ended it all weird.  I don't know but I liked it. I've waited almost forever to see that movie so I was excited that I finally got to. big_smile

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Gee thanks, Rick.  Now I'm gonna be all critical of the sound next time I watch it.  tongue

Mel you said you were gonna TiVo it.  What happened?  Go to the Siffy website, I'm sure it'll say on there when they air the movie again.

I still think it's possible that Siffy screwed up the ending.  Yeah, I'm sure it did end with a mystery to leave the door open for sequels.  It's a fact that Chris signed on to do 3 movies.  However, I do not see that happening since they couldn't even find a distributor for this one and had to sell it to Siffy.  But I think the way their movies just cut off and go directly to half-screen credits at the end may have lopped off the last couple of shots.  The only way they might make more movies is if it turns out to be a huge hit for Siffy and they decide to make sequels.  In that case, my bet is that neither Chris nor Kyle Rankin would be involved.  But of course, if they are and it does happen, stay tuned here and you'll be the first to know.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

One more thing on the sound..at the end they open the window and say listen, ans chris says "no buzzing".  And I said, "So what, there never was any buzzing"  The sound designer should have had a sound of the bugs which went through out, in order for that line to make sense.  Sorry to vent, but this is the kind of wasted oportunity which drives me nuts. (you should hear me talk bout some of the big features every year)

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Yeah, I noticed that one.  I wondered if they had tried to lay in a buzzing sound, but couldn't get it to work so that it wasn't annoying to the viewer throughout.  Really makes me wish you could talk to Rankin about it and find out what happened...

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Yeah, that is probably the answer, but that is why is is supposed to be a creative job.  If you make it a clear buzz it can get really annoying.  That is why I would have created something more along the lines of cicadas.  They can be constant and not annoying (as long as it isn't too loud), and yet clearly insect sounding.  The point is, they should have been creative enough to solve the problem.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

People on IMDb are driving me nuts saying Infestation is a better than average Siffy movie and that obviously Siffy can make better movies like this one when they try so why aren't the rest of their movies as good?  I keep telling them that Siffy didn't make it but no one's listening.   Very frustrating.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Regarding the sound.

What type of sound systems did you watch the movie with?

It could be possible that there was indeed buzzing sounds but they were only audible through the rear channels.

Now if you did indeed watch it with a sound system that uses the rear channels/speakers and nothing was heard from them then I stand corrected.

Perhaps the only true way to verify if there was or wasn't any buzzing sounds is to wait for the dvd release.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Rick is a professional sound engineer for film and television, Illinois.  He knows what he's talking about.   His sound system at home is not the problem.  All his points are absolutely valid.  Here are his credits, for the record, because he's too modest to post them...

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

The sound system wasn't the problem.  And FYI when a film is mixed, there is always a TV mix done, in which any sounds which are only in the surrounds, are mixed into the front middle to avoid just such a problem.

The only possible reason for the absence other than it being a creative mistake, is that the BG buzzing was mixed so low, that you can only hear in in a theater(which would also be a mistake) or that the sound was either too high or too low a fequency for home speakers.  If they did that (and didn't have any mid range) than I would say that maybe it wasn't a mistake but it probably wasn't a good idea.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

OK.

Is the TV mix the same as what is on the dvd?

In other words do they sound mix movies on dvd the same as for TV & DVD/Blu-Ray or do they use different sound mixes for dvd and/or Blu-Ray and TV?

And what about HDTV? Which I think has at least DVD quality sound.

Wow, impressive Rick. You should be proud. Also i have noticed a large trend towards childrens and cartoon shows. Happy coincidence? or is that a preference of yours?

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

I started in animation, and the work has continued to come there.  I have always enjoyed it, but animation work doesn't get the respect it deserves, so I have always tried to do a variety of things.  And in the end, I do the jobs I get, if you know what I mean.

On big features there will be numerous mixes for different release mediums.  A friend of mine who works on huge features (he has done a bunch of Bruckheimer's movies), once spent 2 to 3 months doing the various versions of the mixes of National treasure 2.  So, yes, there is often a DVD mix.  There is always a TV mix, and a Foreign mix (called a M & E, for music and effects) which is used for the dubbed versions.

The various versions (other than the M & E) aren't hugely different from the theatrical versions, they are just adjusted so that they will play better on home systems.  If you want me to give you more detail I will, but I think it may be getting boring already.

That's great, Rick.  I always love learning more about how these things are done.  It was so much fun sitting in on that Bones editing session.  You guys gave us such a great glimpse of all the work that goes into something most people take for granted, even when it means so very much.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

I quite enjoyed Infestation. Chris M. is a terrific leading man, and the similar premised Eight Legged Freaks was not nearly as much fun. Also, it was a kick to find out that the actor that played "Sara" was born in Toronto (like I was) and is the daughter of Bob Nevin, who played for the Leafs years ago.

Hee.  Glad you liked it, Shell.  It was a lot of fun.  I like Brooke Nevin too.  She hasn't gotten to do anything terribly substantial yet, but I think she's got it in her.  I've seen her in a few things on TV and she's always quite appealing.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Oh, I will say there's one thing I'm disappointed in.  No kiss.  Before they started shooting, we gave Kyle Rankin three directives...

1. Don't let Chris cut his hair before the shoot.
2. Make him shave.
3. He must kiss the girl.

Well, we got floppy hair, I'm pleased with that.  He didn't have too much face fuzz and I'm used to it now anyway so that's cool.  But we got no kissage!  Damn!  That's just not fair.  sad

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Heh, I just looked back and found our very first email from Kyle Rankin, from May 25, 2007...

Hey Tina,

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. Thanks for your interest in Infestation. Yes, we're shooting in Sofia, Bulgaria -- first day of our shoot is Tuesday -- Chris is here & doing very well. Rounding out the cast will also be Brooke Nevin (Sara), Ray Wise (Ethan, Cooper's dad), and Kinsey Packard (Cindy) to name a few.

I couldn't be more excited to be working with Chris. I feel he's a truly gifted artist -- wise beyond his years & blessed with great instincts (not to mention funny & extremely watchable). I believe we'll have a lot of fun bringing this film to life!

All my best,

Kyle

I don't wanna put a spoiler space here, so feel free to PM me, but what was with the ending of Infestation ?

I thought that all of the bugs had blowed up.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Hey, your guess is as good as anyone's.  It's like the movie just cut off.  And Siffy went to the split screen credits.  I've been trying to find out, but Rankin was silent all weekend.  Speculation on IMDb is that Hugo was playing The Game with Cooper.  That he told them to look, but there was really nothing there.  If that's the case, it's a cool, funny way to end it.  But Siffy ruined the joke by cutting away too soon.

Oh yeah, I forgot about The Game. The ending was so sudden it reminded me of the last episode of The Sopranos, in which Tony may or may not have been wacked.

I say NOT wacked because there will be a Sopranos movie sooner than later.

It looks interesting. I'm a big fan of thriller/sci-fi/horror movies.
