Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

This is just in from director Kyle Rankin:

There's going to be a special screening of Infestation at the Topanga Film Festival in Topanga, CA on October 17, 2009. The screening will be open air (bring warm clothes!) and will also be a DVD release party of sorts (DVD gets released in the US on Oct 13).

The screening will be at 7 PM and will cost $10 (online)/$15 (door). More information and a link to buy tickets online can be found on the film festival's website. Please note that the movie is rated R.

Nice new review.  Doesn't get all it's facts straight, but at least you can tell the review really dug the movie...

Ah, man.  I live close to Topanga and it's so easy to get to and would totally go to that if not for the fact that I have a prior commitment at exactly the same time.  It's a shame since as far as I can tell there have been little to no actual screenings of this in the states thus far.  I wonder if anyone who posts/lurks here is going to get to go.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

That is a real shame because the movie really works so much better on the big screen, especially with the right audience. I saw it at a film festival and I'm really glad that I had the chance to see it at a "real" screening instead of just at home on my TV. Especially as a Chris fan, it's such a reward, seeing Chris in close-up multiple times and having him featured such a lot throughout the movie. And you're right, the movie won't get a theatrical release, it's straight to DVD and thus it's likely this'll be your only chance to see it on the big screen.

I don't think there's any other active members who live even remotely close to Topanga, so most likely you're the only one who might be close enough to go there.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

That was so much fun!  They cut little character bits here and there in the Siffy version that I saw for the first time tonight.  There is no big rumbling sound at the end, but the transition does work much better than it did on TV.  There's also no making of doc on the Region 1 DVD.  But it wasn't all that spectacular anyway.  I really enjoyed watching it again with no commercials, no icons for other shows or a TV channel cluttering up the screen, and with naughty words and boobies restored.  big_smile

There are a couple of us who live close enough.  Topanga is part of the greater Los Angeles area.  I would love to go, but with my schedule it probably isn't realistic.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Listening to the commentary track now...

Nice bit of trivia:  Chris improvised that bit where Cooper almost throws up after he wakes up his boss and she throws up.  Chris told Rankin about how his friends know he has a weak gag reflex so they tease him by pretending to throw up and actually make him throw up sometimes.  LOL!  Poor guy.  I can sympathize, I have a similar issue, but at least my friends don't torture me with it.  lol

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Oh man, did I hear that right?  Did Rankin just say Chris improvised the "I peed a little" line too?  He said it gets the biggest laugh at all the screenings he's attended.  Awesome.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Another improvised moment is after the Tazed bug explosed.  Chris ad-libbed the line about how the others got it bad and he didn't really get much, and Ray ad-libbed smearing bug goop on his mouth.  That kind of stuff only happens when you're having fun making a movie.  And again, it's what gets the biggest laughs.  lol

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Another bit I loved turns out to also be Chris ad-libbing.  The part at the end where Cooper tells Hugo, "you don't have to go in there, but I do..."  And Hugo goes, and Cooper says, "And you're going anyway.  That's awesome, that's fantastic."  All Chris.  Wow.  He made up the best stuff in the movie on the day.

Geez, it's like Chris wrote the movie.  Heehee.  He also improvised the part where he tells Sara and Hugo about what he was dreaming.  LOL!

Did they actually have a script for this movie? Hahaha seems like ALOT of it was improvised. But that being said, Chris is awesome smile

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Fangoria's review...

For round two this week I crossed my fingers, crossed my chest, said some Hail Mary's, ate my peas, you name it, I did it in the hopes that INFESTATION would be superior in any way to that 'ghost' story THE HAUNTED AIRMAN. 25 minutes into the film I wasn't completely convinced this Big Bug flick was going to trump that Pattinson pooper. 35 minutes in I decidedly changed my mind.

Young workhorse Chris Marquette (FREDDY VS. JASON, ALPHA DOG) stars as Cooper, a rebellious little goober with a sharp sense of humor and a serious lack of motivation. Cooper's working a job his father (who doesn't share the best relationship with his son) lined up for him, and failing miserably; he's unproductive, he goofs around at work, and he's late on a regular basis. That group of promising traits lands Cooper in his bosses office one morning, where he's handed his expected exit pass. But as Cooper's boss lays down the law, the entire city (and possibly world?) experience some strange phenomenon.

A high pitch squeal and a bright light later and Cooper awakens, wrapped in some form of cocoon. Disoriented and physically ill, Cooper quickly realizes everyone around him has been cocooned. Even worse he immediately encounters a bug big enough to make any macho Texas native scream in sheer terror. After surviving and escaping the initial bug confrontation Cooper begins waking others who rise with the same symptoms. A solid handful of characters are pulled from cocooned unconsciousness to discover that the entire city has been overrun by mammoth insects of varying sorts.

With no clear leader yet defined, the group splits in a tense scene which sees a good chunk of our supporting cast eliminated right off the bat. Somehow Cooper, the silly slacker finds himself in a loose leadership role, as the ordinarily under achieving youngster leads a select few through the post apocalyptic streets of a what has now become a ghost town. Together, those who survive the venture will enter the bugs nest and come face to face with the menacing monsters who have violently silenced the city. A handful of explosives may provide just the payback these survivors seek.

Initially I really felt INFESTATION's humor fell flat on it's face, and in hindsight a bit really did. However, as I noted earlier, roughly half an hour in and the film took a turn for the better - much better. The flat lines of the film's first frames quickly became a distant memory as witty punch lines and comical dialogue (including a few cool little tributes) took to the norm. The character development is actually quite well done. There are enough memorable personalities in this platoon to fill a triple feature, and a few cast members are absolutely brilliant (Ray Wise, who plays Ethan, Cooper's father and E. Quincy Sloan who ironically plays a handicapped man are two shiners in particular). The direction and pace of the film are both smooth and entertaining, and the special effects while hilarious at times, are excellent at others. Despite a somewhat rocky start, Kyle Rankin's homage to 50's B-monster movies is really quite enjoyable.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Took me long enough, but here's finally the Infestation screencaps. There's a LOT! 723 to be exact. I know, I know, might be a little excessive, but Chris is in this one a lot. I might have been able to reduce the number to around 600, but why delete yummy Chris if I don't have to? wink

http://www.chris-marquette.com/gallery/ … ?album=226

So, who's gonna help me pick the scenes to vidcap? I can't do every one of Chris's scenes, so a top 5 to 10 would be great.

Re: Infestation (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE BEGIN ON PAGE 15)

Oh, and by the way... The quality of the screencaps isn't all that great. Must be the PAL DVD, somehow it was really difficult to get clear shots that weren't blurred or otherwise weirdly distorted. I'd really love to have the Chris movies as Blu-ray because that would get us awesome screencaps. Not that I have a Blu-ray DVD drive to start with...
