Re: The Invisible (CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!)

I hope you do, Illinois.  smile

His role is VERY heavy.  He told us last October that shooting this movie was the most depressing time of his life.  Sure hope it turned out great so he'll feel that it was worth what he had to go through.  He seems pretty enthusiastic about it in interviews.

Re: The Invisible (CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!)

I just got back from the movie and have yet to really formulate much of an opinion. I found the movie to be entertaining enough, but kind of average.

I'll come back to this thread when it's not as fresh in my mind. big_smile

Oh, Anne, I really wanted to say that I don't know if you've been worried since we found out about it like I have that Pete's suicide might be graphic.  It's not, thank God.  I didn't know if I'd be able to take it if it was.  He did it like you'd expect a spineless twerp to do it.  I can tell you more if you want...

Re: The Invisible (CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!)

You know the pics of him in the suit with the flower in his lapel?  Well, he dresses up, takes a bunch of pills, washes them down with a full glass of what looks like bourbon or scotch, lays down stoically on his bed and waits to die.  All the while Nick is yelling at him not to do it.  When he starts to die, he slips out of his body and suddenly his spirit is standing there with Nick's spirit and Nick begs him to tell him where they moved his body before it's too late. Wow, I totally wasn't expecting that.  It was very cool.

A bunch of people on IMDb are arguing about whether Pete actually died or not because they left it open to interpretation.  He's not dead the last time we see him and they never say one way or the other.

But in the book, he died.  In the Swedish film, he died.  And Chris said he died.  So I think Disney just copped out, like they did with the gun scenes, and cut the final shot of him dying to keep the movie from being too tragic so they could win the teen audience.

Re: The Invisible (CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!)

I think we're supposed to be angry with Pete.  I certainly was.  My jaw was hanging down when he helped the bad guys dump Nick's body down into the drainage hole.  I understand that he as scared, but still.

Re: The Invisible (CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!)

Deedee brought this to my attention.  It's an auction of Pete's stuff from TI.  Notice that fat wad of cash...

http://cgi.ebay.com/2018-THE-INVISIBLE- … dZViewItem

Supposedly, Pete stole Nick's stash of money that they reference a couple of times so he could escape to Europe at some point.  They cut that scene too.  The stage money in the auction proves they shot it.

Damn...

Re: The Invisible (CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!)

Hey Brenna, where y'at?  Are you gonna tell us what you thought of the movie?

I enjoyed it while I was watching it.  But the more I learn about what was cut, the more I understand what kept it from being really great.  During my second viewing today, I was struck hard by the idea that there are two different movies here --- the one they shot and scored with moody symphonic cues that was probably rated R.  And one they cut to pieces and wove a kind of alt/emo-ish soundtrack into.  It struck me during some of the awkward musical transitions surrounding the dam scenes.  I'm curious if you got the same vibe.

Re: The Invisible (CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!)

Ah yeah, I'm around. Little bit busy, but it's all about to be over.

I agree with you, Deb. The movie was enjoyable enough -- it kept my interest for the most part, although I'm sure the fact that Chris was in it had something to do with that. Chris was fantastic, as always, in his part. I really wish they would have wrapped up his character arc, though, instead of leaving it for the viewer to decide. Like you, I'm starting to wonder if that was intentional or if scenes were cut in order to make the PG-13 rating.

The story just didn't connect smoothly enough for me. I felt that it was really difficult to relate to the characters - their backgrounds weren't really explained. For instance, although they briefly mention something about Annie's mother, her anger and motives were unclear, which made it hard for me to buy her actions as a result of a bad home life. They touched upon the whole stepmother character, as well as the neglected little brother, but something just seemed to be missing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the type of viewer who needs everything spelled out in order to enjoy a movie. This one just didn't work for me.

Aside from Chris's parts, which were outstanding, I thought the acting was just alright. Justin Chatwin really got on my nerves after awhile; he seems very aware of the camera, which irked me for whatever reason. He was just not believable enough.

I also noticed some issues with the music, although I can't recall individual moments where it was off. I felt that the songs were placed in scenes to make up for the fact that the acting and/or storyline just wasn't cutting it. I like most of the music they had chosen, it just didn't seem to fit a lot of the time.

All in all, this movie wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen, but it wasn't great either. Chris was awesome, and it's not something a Dorquette should go without seeing. smile

Re: The Invisible (CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!)

Thanks for sharing that Brenna.  Yeah, there were a coupl of instances where it felt like the songs were wedged in to explain what was going on in the characters' heads.  That should not be necessary.

I do know that Mick Davis's script was heavily re-written.  Which was probably a large part of what went wrong.  He wrote the Swedish version too so he would know best how to adapt it.  But then Hollywood got hold of it.  Worse --- Disney got hold of it and watered it way down.  I think we may have gotten a completely different, far strong movie if too many cooks hadn't spoiled to the pot.

Re: The Invisible (CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!)

WARNING: RANT

OK, the TI board at IMDb is making me long for the days of the Alpha Dog troll.  It's awful!  I've never seen anything like it.  There are two camps over there --- guys in their teens and early 20's ripping it to shreds.  And girls of the same age who luuuuuuved it.  But it would've been so much better if Annie hadn't died and she and Nick hooked up.  :puke:

But the worst thing, the worst thing of all --- and I blame Disney and their wimping out --- is that they ALL refuse to believe that Pete died.  I told them he died in the book, he died in the Swedish movie and Chris said he died.  So damnit, he died.  But they just keep coming back with, IT DOESN'T MATTER, HE WAS ALIVE IN THE LAST SHOT SO HE LIVED.  yikes

Disney sucks!!!  They took all the power of out that character and out of Chris's performance by editing his DEATH scene to leave it open for interpretation.  Wasn't it already bad enough that they cut at least three entire scenes involving Chris?  Now Pete doesn't get to do something kinda noble and die by his own hand to atone for his greivous sin against his best friend?  WTF is that?  Has no one at Disney ever read Greek mythology?  This is ridiculous.

So maybe it wasn't just the cuts that disappointed Chris, maybe it was the fact that his character's meaning was destroyed by Disney's desire to please the kiddies.

Thing one:  Deedee won Pete's stuff form TI!!!  Congrats, Deedee!  Woohoo!

Thing two:  Anne, could you post the sound clip of Chris and I talking about the movie in January that we cut out of the interview because of the spoiler?  Post a link to it in this thread and TeeJay will still be safe from it.  I think it might be interesting for people to hear now.

Thanks!
