Harry Potter (contains some spoilers for Book 7!)

WARNING! This thread contains a few spoilers for Book 7 since we're talking about the books later on too!

Whoa. The new Harry Potter movie won't be on in English at the Düsseldorf theater. That blows big time. Never would have expected that. They show all the big blockbusters in English. Well, there's still the theater in Cologne, but I don't like going there too much. You can never find a place to park the car and the sound and picture quality isn't all that great. "The Rialto smells like a nursing home," Joan says. Yeah, so does the Metropolis... But I guess I got no choice if I wanna see the movie. And I do.

Re: Harry Potter (contains some spoilers for Book 7!)

I'm a big theater buff. If I wanna watch a movie, I will always try to watch it in the theater. Thing is that they dub everything into German over here, and I hate that. Only very few theaters show a select few movies in English. Apparently, HP is not among them this time.

I've seen all the Potter movies in the theatre.  Doesn't make sense that they're not showing it nearby in English.

Too many little kids in there...

I know what you mean.  For movies that appeal to little kids, I usually wait a few weeks till the crowd dies down.

Re: Harry Potter (contains some spoilers for Book 7!)

Oops, my bad. I guess I didn't look right and I'd like to correct myself: They actually are showing HP 5 in the theater in Düsseldorf in English. Great! Then I guess I know what I'm gonna do either Thursday night or Friday afternoon. smile Hey, cool, this is a worldwide early release, is it? They're showing it on Wednesday already. I just reserved a ticket for Wednesday at 6:45. Let's hope I don't have to work late and can't make it. The 8:30 shows for Wed and Thus were already packed, they didn't have any good seats in those anymore.

Re: Harry Potter (contains some spoilers for Book 7!)

Watched it today. And I have to say, I'm impressed. I haven't watched a movie that drew me in as this one did for a while. The effects were great, the acting was great, it never once was boring and visually it was stunning at times.

Of course, if you really love the book, you're gonna be disappointed because they left out so much. But how can you squeeze a 760 pages novel into a 3 hour film otherwise? You can't, and I was happy with what they did with it. And I just LOVE Alan Rickman as Snape. Couldn't tell you that often enough. Another point of critique from my side is that the kid actors looked a little too old. But that's because they've been shooting roughly one movie every two years lately, and the novels all play one year apart. So I think Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint (and pretty much all the other kids) must now be two or three years older than the novel counterparts are supposed to be.

And can I just say: The Thestrals? Ew!

Re: Harry Potter (contains some spoilers for Book 7!)

I would love to see the movie, but I still have to finish the book first! I am still in the middle of it, I can't find the time to read at the moment. Plus I think I lost the papers I made with vocabulary. Ah, well, since I don't have money anyway I am going to wait for the DVD and then, at some weekend I'll make a Harry Potter weekend and watch all the movies in a row. LOL

Re: Harry Potter (contains some spoilers for Book 7!)

I saw it and loved it as well. I've been a huge fan of the books since I was about eleven years old, but I've never been angry about the films leaving certain parts out. Like you said TeeJay, you just can't cram a book that big into a 3 hour film. And you're right, the kids are definitely getting older, and though I didn't think they all passed for fifteen in this movie, it's still better than having a bunch of 25-year-olds playing those parts, which happens way too much in films & television if you ask me.

Re: Harry Potter (contains some spoilers for Book 7!)

Well, yeah, but we wouldn't have Becky Wahlstrom to love if someone hadn't hired a 27-year-old to play a 16-year-old on JoA.  I don't mind it if the actor can pull it off.  She did.

Re: Harry Potter (contains some spoilers for Book 7!)

Yeah, I definitely agree. JoA did a really good job with the cast looking the correct age. But shows like Smallville...I mean, it's a good show, but come on! Tom Welling in no way passed for fifteen in in the first season of that show...not even Clark Kent at fifteen.

Re: Harry Potter (contains some spoilers for Book 7!)

Yeah, especially since Tom went from playing 20-something "Karate" Rob on Judging Amy to playing young Clark.  But I thought he was supposed to be 16 when the show started.  I could be wrong and he was definitely too, um, strapping to pass for a geeky teen.  Truth is, I didn't mind much.  I'm not a "huge" fan of that show but I've probably seen at least half the eps that have aired and at times really enjoyed it.

As for JoA, what's cool is that Michael, Chris, Amber and Aaron were not all that old.  Only a year or two older than their characters.

Cool.  What channel was that show on?  Is it exclusive to Canada?

Re: Harry Potter (contains some spoilers for Book 7!)

I admit to being kind of a Superman fan, so I had to give Smallville a chance.  And I really loved Tom on JA.  Also, I've been a huge fan of Annette O'Toole for as long as TeeJay's been alive.  God, I'm so OLD!  And I already exposed myself as a John Glover fan in the Questions For Chris thread.  I could totally see myself doing a DVD marathon someday.

Re: Actors playing younger kids:
While I absolutely loved Jason Behr as Max on Roswell, I was ready to believe he was 16 in season one, but from season two on it became such a stretch. He was in his late twenties then, I think. He looked more like 26 than 16, even when they stuck him in high school clothes.

Re: Harry Potter:
Dee, you should really give the books a chance. I hated all the hype in the beginning too. I started reading the books when book 3 was already out as paperback. And I loved them. Granted, they're not literary masterpieces. Just lovely, easy entertainment. They are easy to read, because they're supposed to be for children, but there's really a lot of "grown-up" themes in it too. It's just a fun read every time. After the third book, I was craving more. But I have to admit that after about the fifth, I don't mind having to wait a year or two for the next one. I think Book 7 comes out next week. I'm curious to see how J.K. is gonna wrap up the whole thing.

Yeah, me too. I remember being so clueless about why those guys on TV lookes so grown-up while the guys at my school didn't. LOL I was young and had no clue about TV business.
There are still some actors who look young enough to play Teenagers, like Becky Wahlstrom, who was perfect as Grace but I think there are enough shows where you can see very good that the actors are older. For example The OC was a show like that for me, and this was one of the reasons I never was interested in watching it.

Re: Harry Potter (contains some spoilers for Book 7!)

Has anyone finished reading the new book yet? I got it on Saturday at midnight when it was released. I read some Saturday, then on Sunday night I read straight through from chapter 8 to chapter 36 to the epilogue. By the time I was done it was 7:00 a.m.. 12 hours of reading. It was worth it. I couldn't put it down. One of those things where you have to keep going.

I hear JK Rowling is maybe writing a encyclopedia to tie up any loose ends, and say what happened to other characters. So, I'll be waiting for that.
