Re: Fanboys

If by "the guys" you mean the actors, don't count on it.  As of last week, they had not been invited to the Con.  It may be that even if they are, they can't go due to the de facto actor's strike that's kinda sorta going on right now.  I guess Kyle's lucky they got the ADR done before this nonsense started up again.

Re: Fanboys

Finally, the announcement all Fanboys fans who are attending Comic Con have been waiting for!

FANBOYS Screening at Comic Con!

Monday, 21 July 2008

THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED FILM "FANBOYS" TO HAVE AN EXCLUSIVE SCREENING ON JULY 24TH DURING COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL 2008

Tickets to be Given Away to the First 300 People in Line at the Lucasfilm 7th Annual Star Wars Movie Challenge Awards held in San Diego.

Trigger Street Productions and The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that the highly anticipated film "Fanboys" will have an exclusive screening of the film during this year's Comic-Con International Convention.  Tickets will be given away to the first 300 people in line at the Lucasfilm's 7th Annual Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge Awards, held on July 24th at 8:30pm in Ballroom 20 at the San Diego Convention Center. During the Awards Ceremony director Kyle Newman will introduce select footage from the film, providing fans a sneak peak of the full-length feature to be shown at 10:30pm that same evening.

In the preceding months, Star Wars fans across the globe had generated a remarkable grassroots campaign, demonstrating unanimous support for the main character's battle with cancer to remain in the storyline of the film. In response to this widespread zeal, the filmmakers incorporated extensive feedback into the final cut.

"I could not be more excited that 'Fanboys' is being released this September and is the version of the film that the fans want," said "Fanboys" producer Kevin Spacey.  "I am enormously grateful to Jedi Knight Harvey Weinstein for having allowed Trigger Street to restore "Fanboys" to its original story and am thrilled that it will first screen during Comic-Con. We believe in this film and are honored that George Lucas and all his team gave us permission to film Skywalker Ranch and let us have so much fun with Star Wars. We also have a couple of surprises in the film that I think will bring added enjoyment to all the fans of Lucas' great and epic movies and Trigger Street is proud to have produced this film and to have kept the dark side at bay."

"Speaking for everyone involved in the project, we are truly grateful for all the passion the fans have shown the film," stated director Kyle Newman.  "Their support has been nothing short of phenomenal and I couldn't think of a better place in the world than San Diego during Comic-Con to unveil the final cut of 'Fanboys.'"

"If this movie doesn't show that Lucasfilm has a sense of humor, nothing will!" said Howard Roffman, President of Lucas Licensing.  "We were happy to give them permission to have some fun with Star Wars and salute our incredible fans at the same time."

Set in 1998 the film, starring Jay Baruchel ("Knocked Up,"  "Million Dollar Baby"), Tony Award Winner Dan Fogler ("Kung Fu Panda," "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee"), Sam Huntington ("Superman Returns," "Not Another Teen Movie"), Chris Marquette ("The Girl Next Door," "Another World"), and Kristen Bell ("Forgetting Sarah Marshall," "Pulse") is a heart-warming comedy that follows a group of young, passionate Star Wars fans on a cross-country quest to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch and watch "Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace," before it's released.

"Fanboys" is a production of Trigger Street Productions and Picture Machine. The film is directed by Kyle Newman and produced by Kevin Spacey, Dana Brunetti, Evan Astrowsky and Matthew Perniciaro. The script was written by Kyle Newman, Adam Goldberg and Ernest Cline and Kevin Mann serve as executive producer.

"Another World"?  Will these idiots out there who write these articles please PAY ATTENTION to Chris's credits and stop putting stupid shit like that in there?  I'm sorry, but I'm sick of it.  His only claims to fame are The Girl Next Door and Another Freakin' World?!?

Re: Fanboys

I had to email them. I just couldn't stand it...

Hi Guys,

Thanks for posting the news about the Comic-Con screening of Fanboys.  It's great news!

However, I must point out that in your article, you did a rather cursory job on the credits of one the actors in the film.  In your forth paragraph, you refer to "Linus" (the dying guy), played by Chris Marquette as the "main character".  And then you simply shoe-horn his name into the bottom of the cast list and use The Girl Next Door and Another World (?!?) as his credits.

Excuse me, but this is an insult.  Here is a guy who's worked his butt off for 14 years in this industry.  He has a list of credits half a mile long and you pull out a soap opera he had a tiny kid part on 12 years ago?  A quick look at his IMDb credits would've pulled up, oh say, Alpha Dog --- which is a far more important credit than some soap from a million years ago.  Or you might've mentioned Joan Of Arcadia --- which just began running in syndication on The Sci-Fi Channel two weeks ago.  Or how 'bout, Race To Witch Mountain ---- which he just finished filming for Disney?  This is a movie that will also have a heavy presence at Comic Con on the same Thursday that will see Fanboys finally screen.

You must understand that this storyline we all fought so long and hard for is MARQUETTE'S STORYLINE, OK?  He deserves more of a prominent mention in your article.  You guys have even interviewed him, for cripes sake!  Come on.  You can do so much better.

The way these credits are laid out, you make it seem like Jay Baruchel is the star of the movie.  I realize this probably sounds rather meaningless to you, but to myself and my friends who've worked so hard for this movie, it's pretty important that sites like yours get things right...

I'm having a hard time believing that it would be released in September.

Re: Fanboys

Me too, Simon.  I no longer believe in release dates where this movie is concerned.  I will believe it when I'm sitting in the theater and the opening credits start to roll.  I'm hopeful, or maybe more like cautiously optimistic.  We've been punked by Harvey Weinstein too many times to ever trust him again.  But I've heard a rumor that they're going to announce the new official release date at the con, so maybe we'll know in a couple of days...

Re: Fanboys

No, Larry, the OFFICIAL MySpace did nothing of the sort.  The BOGUS MySpace did.  TeeJay runs the official page and she's on vacation, without Internet access.  This is no confirmation of anything.  Sorry.  When it's official, we'll know.

Who runs the one on MySpace Film with the Weinstein graphics?

Anyway, I think you missed my point. My post was meant to be sarcastic. Hence the questionmark and remark about the timing of it, since you've had all this information posted here for days.

Regardless of who runs it, they're way behind.

It was meant as a compliment to you.

Re: Fanboys

That site has been a thorn in everyone's side for almost as long as it's been up.  First, the graphics were unviewable in Firefox and even after numerous complaints, they refused to fix it.  Then, they cowed to TWC and changed the page to call the movie "A Film By Steven Brill", when Kyle Newman was still the official director of record.  Has been all along.  They had the wrong release date up and refused to change it, even after that date came and went.  They stole graphics that TeeJay created and used them without her permission.  When she asked them to remove the graphics, they ignored her.

We've heard varying stories as to who runs it.  Originally, it was supposed to just be some regular dude in like Idaho or something.  Then we were told it was run by someone inside TWC.  Then we were told it was an officially sanctioned, TWC-owned page.

Uh huh.  Well, if that's the case then why does Kyle Newman keep asking us if we know who's running it?  Especially when it has misinformation that he wants corrected.  It was because of the Brill thing and their refusal to put Kyle's name back on the movie where it belongs that the "OFFICIAL" Fanboys MySpace was created --- by TeeJay at the request of the artists behind the movie who wanted the record set straight.

And that's where we stand.  It's a damn shame too, because people out there don't know any of this stuff and 20,000 of them have signed up for that page now, expecting to find the latest news about the movie there --- which as you pointed out, they NEVER have.  Well, until they steal it from us.  We've done everything we can to make this right, but until the folks who asked us to make that "OFFICIAL" page choose to step forward and identify themsleves --- or TWC chooses to own the other page and get serious about it --- it's just our word against theirs.

There's quite a funny fight about it in the comments on Wiki, if you're interested.

Re: Fanboys

If anyone has the G4 channel, the begin their Comic-Con coverage at 7 PM tonight.  Fanboys may or may not get mentioned.  And RTWM might get mentioned too since the panel on it is going on at this very moment.  We'll see.

Re: Fanboys

OK, so apparently, they did announce a new release date for the movie last night --- September 19th.

Personally, I'm still not inclined to fully buy into it.  We've been disappointed too many times before.  And what bothers me about the whole thing is that this is not coming from TWC.  It's coming from Spacey & Trigger Street.  Now, unless TWC just bowed out and gave up distribution rights to the movie, this doesn't really count as an official release date announcement.  As far as I know, Trigger Street does NOT have a distribution arm.  They still have to release through a studio.  And until that studio, be it TWC or someone else, issues a press release or starts advertising that date, I'm taking this with a big chunk of salt.

Re: Fanboys

That's wonderful.  But still.  August of last year was confirmed.  January of this year was confirmed --- they even put posters up in some theaters with the January date.  Maybe I'll believe it when I see a commercial on TV with the date in it.  Sorry,  Larry.  We've been through too much with this one.  I just don't fool so easily anymore.

Re: Fanboys

Confirming a date is one thing. Moving it is another. Dates are always subject to change, as you know. Think Alpha Dog...Mandy Lane...

Now, whether or not it actually comes out on that date is another story. but it IS confirmed. I just got off the phone with the distributor.

So...

1) Will it come out on that date? Dates are always subject to change.

2) Is it an officially confirmed date by the distributor? Yes.

Remember, you just said:

Call me Fox Mulder.  I want to believe.  But the chunk of salt remains.

I also said I'll believe it when I see that date advertised nationally.  If TeeJay wants to put it on the front page when she gets back from vacation, that's fine.  I, however, am not jumping up and down just yet.  I simply do not trust TWC with this movie anymore.

I don't blame you one bit. You know I've been through this with other movies many many many times over the past few years. But, as a journalist, I can only do what a journalist is supposed to do -- report the facts when they come from a reputable or official source. If I am posting official release dates, as I do all the time, I post it no later than when the distributor gives it to me directly. At that point it's official, whether it ends up coming out on that date or not.

You asked for something official from TWC so I picked up the phone, called the press office, got the confirmation, and posted it for you. Whether or not you want to accept that it's going to come out is one thing. But to say you still don't "believe it" means that you don't trust that I actually called them or talked to the press office. An official statement from the press office is what makes it official, not advertising. It can be weeks before that happens.

COMIC-CON 2008: 'Fanboys' Restored

I had a spy in Thursday's Star Wars awards show for fan films, and part of the program was devoted to FANBOYS. This is the pic that had Star Wars fans upset because The Weinstein Company wanted to remove the sentimental primary plotline, about a kid with cancer whose last wish is to see Star Wars Episode I before he dies. The pic's producer brought on stage was Kevin Spacey, who said the movie has been restored to its original form, the cancer plotline returned, and all this was due to the power of committed fans. Nobody on stage mentioned the Weinstein name -- but Spacey did say the fans had defeated The Dark Side...

Come on, Larry, you know I trust you.  It's them I do not trust.  They have dangled this movie in front of us six times and yanked it back.  You've heard of once bitten, twice shy?  Well, I'm six times bitten, twelves times shy!  This is the key quote from me if you're going to quote me...

I simply do not trust TWC with this movie anymore.

Privately, I agree 100%. Publicly, though, as a journalist, I have to announce it as an official release date.

From where I sit, you can also replace "TWC" with "Senator" about Mandy Lane. That case is slightly different though because they never announced a release date, ever. Most people think they have, but they never actually did. TWC did before they sold it, but Senator never has.

I would compare this to Alpha Dog. That was a situation where multiple "official" release dates were announced. But each time I still posted them, even though they were cancelled one after another. The fact is, if it turns out to be true, and I didn't post it, I'm left in the dust.

Nobody is saying you shouldn't announce it.  I'm sure the fans who post on IMDb will love you for it.  Especially since TWC apparently couldn't care less about issuing an official press release.  Forgive my cynicism, but they earned it on this one.

What on earth leads you to believe that they aren't going to issue an official press release? Obviously there is a gap in the time between when they decide to issue one and when it is released. I happen to have spoken with them during that time period.

Again, what sounds to good to be true? That it will actually be released or that they confirmed the date to me?

Why is it so hard to believe that the press office could have given me information in advance of a release being issued?
