the new Fanboys trailer will start running in front of Kevin's Smith's new movie, Zack & Miri Make A Porno on 10/31.
ROFL
Sorry, just had to laugh. BTW I saw Zack & Miri at Toronto and it's fantastic. Not at all what I expected. Certainly the name alone will increase BO which will increase eyes on the trailer.

Apparently, TWC screwed around with that movie too. Are they capable of releasing a movie they haven't tampered with? Ever?

I didn't really follow it enough to know what they might have done to it. It's not really my genre or area of interest and I only saw it because it sort of dropped into my lap. So I can't compare it to anything.
All I know is that it was enjoyable and I've rarely been to a film where the laughter was so overwhelming. And this was a festival crowd, not all horny male teens. I think it will be a huge hit.

That's great news about the trailer.

50 theaters? That's pitiful and very, very sad. So much for the movie coming to Germany...

I wouldn't throw in the towel just yet. That's a normal platform opening. in fact, it's a pretty good one. Hundreds of films a year begin their runs that way, expanding depending on how well they do.
Most of the films I follow begin with limited distribution. 50 is actually a lot.
Heck, Juno played 7 theaters the first week it opened and only went to 40 theaters the 2nd week. It eventually made it to 2,534 theaters and took in $230 million worldwide.

This movie was not made to be a limited release, Larry. It was supposed to be a big release, and international to boot. Until TWC lost faith in it and tampered with it almost to the point of destroying it. It was never intended as an indie. It's being dumped. No amount of spin is ever going to change that fact.

Also, as much as I love Fanboys, Juno is a whole other caliber... Fanboys isn't going to go from 50 theaters to 2000. It's too much of a geek movie for that (even though I mean that in a positive sense).

Not saying it is, TeeJay. I could have used a thousand examples. I used that one because it's the best and most obvious example to use. But I could name a thousand films that began at 50 theaters or less and went on to expand and do well across the country.
I'm not talking about what TWC did to it in the past or what their strategy is. I'm not saying it will do well. I'm not saying it will be another Juno or anything close to it. I'm not saying this is a clever strategy. I'm not saying that there is any reason to be excited about it.
All I'm saying is that just because it's opening in 50 locations doesn't necessarily mean it won't expand beyond that or do well.

Noted, Larry. It's just that this is such a major disappointment to us, after all we've been through and done for this movie. I'm just glad I've already seen it on a big screen. Now I don't need to get mad when I can't watch it in theaters in Germany. I'm curious what extras they'll put on the DVD. I hope that all the things they've said they'll put on it will actually be on it in the end. But, you know... with TWC involved, I personally ain't counting on it.

I don't blame you one bit. I would say the same thing to Chris' face, or to anyone else associated with the film. There are films with which I've had connections, maybe not as close as yours, but closer than most people know, which went (or are going) through similar machinations. In many cases I've been skeptical and even bitter but publicly still tried to be optimistic. You see, no matter what a studio or distributor does to muck up a film or its release I will do everything I can (if I feel it deserves it) to get people to go. I will do the same with Fanboys because, even though I haven't seen it, I believe in many of the people associated with it, including you folks.

The other problem with the Juno comparison is that, Juno got lucky. A lot of the Big Christmas releases last year were not very popular(Beowolf, sweeney todd, golden compass), and so there was a vacumn, which left an opening for a small movie to break through. Most of the limited releases which have grown into hits, have been released at slower times (early spring, late summer) when audiences are more willing to sample, that is the pattern for Little Miss Sunshine, Memento, Blair Witch Project, and virtually every other serious attempt at creating a hit from a small movie.

So releasing Fanboys around Thanksgiving isn't helping either. If you ask me, the movie was doomed from the moment they allowed Brill to touch it. I'd love to be optimistic about it, but I'm not an optimistic person. And I've invested in this movie too much and been shot down one too many times to believe it's gonna become more than a fast-disappearing blip on the radar, once it hits theaters, as much as I wish it weren't so for the team who made the movie and poured their heart and soul into it.
It pains me to see so many people putting a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it and now seeing it being dumped with just a tiny chance to succeed. It's like TWC is trying to make it especially hard for the movie to succeed. And you know what? I'm not even surprised.
And let me say this, to not sound totally negative. The movie is wonderful. It's funny, it has a heart, the actors all did a great job and it's just an enjoyable ride with lots of laughter and plenty geekery to make even the most hardcore Star Wars fans happy. It doesn't deserve to be treated like this.

You're 100% right, TeeJay. It's a terrific movie. But TWC has doomed it to failure by dumping it in 50 theaters during a crowded holiday weekend. I'm surprised they paid to have 50 prints made, the way they've been acting. And wait till everyone gets a look at the ridicuolous new poster. I'm scared to even imagine what kind of new trailer they've come up with. Whatever it turns out to be, I will say that the one potentially good decision TWC has made is trailering it on Zack & Miri. But remember, it's only going to be on "most" prints. So they wouldn't even go so far as an all-out blitz in front of a movie that could help its profile a great deal.
Just imagine what all the little geeks are going to say when they learn that it may not even play in their town, after waiting all this time to see it. They're gonna be so pissed!
This is nothing more than a glorified token release to boost the sale of the DVD in December. For the first time, I finally believe that the DVD will drop on 12/23. As we've seen with other Chris movies, token-to-DVD can sometimes only take a couple of weeks. So token-to-DVD being basically a month apart in this case is perfectly reasonable.
God, I hope no one we love ever works for TWC again.

Seriously, Seth, STFU...
Rogen Blames The Internet For Fanboys Delay
By Katey Rich: 2008-10-20 09:42:51 ShareThis
Before Seth Rogen was a bankable name who could play potheads and superheroes, he was one of many, many actors taken along for a ride with Fanboys. The indie movie about Star Wars fans on a mission has been tossed around the release calendar so many times by the Weinstein Company, you'd think it wasn't filled with names like Seth Rogen, Kristen Bell, Jay Baruchel and Dan Fogler, all of whom have gone on to bigger roles since the movie was made.
Rogen's doing press for Zack and Miri Make a Porno right now, but Collider managed to ask him about a ton of his other projects, including the often-delayed Fanboys. And, contrary to popular wisdom, Rogen is actually blaming the online fans for the movie's delay. For real!
"I think it's a good lesson in not listening to people on the Internet. I think [the producers] got scared by Internet buzz and I'm of the thought that Internet buzz is literally influenced by 500 people with laptops. And I think they let Internet buzz change it and then change it back and then make some other weird version of it."
OK, so Rogen isn't exactly blaming the fans for the movie's demise. But is he arguing that studio producers just ignore online fan reaction entirely? He goes on to say, "Let the filmmakers make their movies and don't worry about [what] early reactions are." On one hand, sure-- you should make the movie you originally intended to make. On the other hand, a movie called Fanboys probably ought to care just a little bit what the actual fanboys have to say.
Rogen isn't even all that certain the movie will be released-- "I bet you a million dollars it won't [come out]" he said in the interview-- so maybe all this worrying is for nothing. But is he right? Did all the online buzz ruin the movie that so many online communities were looking forward to?
On another note, you can read a lot more about Rogen's upcoming projects, including any potential for Ghosbusters 3, in Collider's interview.
It'd be different if he knew what he was talking about, but he doesn't. It sounds like he thinks the fans messed up the filmmakers original vision, which is ass-backwards and proves that he has no idea about what went on behind the scenes. The fact is that the fans GOT IT BACK for the original filmmakers. More and more, I'm starting to agree with the backlash on this guy...

The point of the token release is to follow with the DVD soon after. That way the advertising for the movie release will also help the DVD release. I would be surprised if the DVD release is much more than a month after the theatrical release.

Well, there's one good thing about a fast token release. We get lots of Lucious Linus screencaps sooner than we thought.
"I think it's a good lesson in not listening to people on the Internet. I think [the producers] got scared by Internet buzz and I'm of the thought that Internet buzz is literally influenced by 500 people with laptops. And I think they let Internet buzz change it and then change it back and then make some other weird version of it."
That is so ironic. Like Deb said, Seth doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. Who got scared wasn't the filmmakers, it was the Weinsteins. And then they let Brill get his messy hands on it. And that's when it all went down the garbage chute that leads straight to the Lucastrash dump. Having the internet fans buzz the movie back into the hands of the filmmakers was the best thing that could happen to it. Get your facts straight, Seth.
What consoles me a little is that Chris was really grateful when we told him we played a part in getting Linus's cancer story back into the movie. He was like, "Wow, thank you. Thank you so much."
