Sounds likes a great dvd but unfortunatly we won't know for sure until the press release is announced. For all we know, we could end up with a bare bones release.

No way it comes out bare bones. I think Harvey The Hutt has learned his lesson about screwing around with Star Wars fans. But we already learned that Chris couldn't be there when they recorded the commentary track. My suspicion is that they may have done it the week he was called back to PR to shoot more stuff for Forgiveness. Otherwise, I just can't see him missing it. As much of a downer as all this has been for him, he still always showed up to promote the movie whenever necessary.

He was even thanked in one of the speeches.
He's been shown at the Golden Globes and now the BAFTAS. All that's left is an appearance at the Oscars.

Weekend box office: $164,000, per screen average= $3727. There were 44 theaters, 44 screens, and 753 showings.
That's not too bad. Anything over $3k per is considered decent. Of films #9-39, only one did better.
P.S. For those who don't follow this sort of thing, these are obviously estimates. They don't include Sunday since they come out on Sunday. Final numbers will be announced tomorrow but they are usually pretty close. They have a general formula to determine Sunday box office based on Saturday and Sunday and historical numbers. Sort if like predicting the weather.

I'm glad there's going to be extras on the DVD but it's lame that Chris won't be on the commentary.

Nice review from Capone of AICN...
FANBOYS Replenishes Capone's Geek Lifeblood from the Front Lines of the STAR WARS/STAR TREK Wars!!!
Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here. This is the little movie that could and did. As much as FANBOYS is a playful poke at the STAR WARS mythology and iconography, I found it worked far better as a love letter to youngsters who experienced the original trilogy in our most formative years, and never gave up hope that a return by George Lucas to his beloved franchise would result in something great. For those of you who remember exactly how a remarkable sense of disbelief swept over you the minute that Lucasfilm logo sparkled across the screen before THE PHANTOM MENACE, this movie is all about you. Regardless of what you felt of that film or the two after it, that time when all things seemed possible again is at the core of FANBOYS.
A little background and full disclosure. I saw FANBOYS for the first and, so far, only time at Comic-Con last July, at a screening that was said to be the world premiere of the final cut of the movie. As far as I know, the version that opens in limited release this weekend is the same version. The cancer storyline is there... barely. I think cancer is mentioned twice in the whole movie and hardly dealt with anywhere else in the film. A few of the celebrity cameos that were added more recently in this now years-in-the-making work are in there as well, but for the most part, this is the film that director Kyle Newman made along with his co-writers Adam Goldberg, and Ernest Cline. Since I saw the film, I've met Kyle (he was my next-seat neighbor at Butt Numb-a-Thon this year) and have told him repeatedly how much I dig the film and how much it made me laugh. Above all things, the movie is funny. They throw a lot of verbal jabs, physical humor, inside geek jokes and great cameos at the audience, and most of it hits. I was particularly bowled over by the penetrating look at the turf war between STAR WARS and "Star Trek" fans. No nerds are spared.
Chris Marquette's character Linus is the one with cancer in 1998, and all his friends want to do is make the long journey across the country to break into the Skywalker Ranch and sneak a peak at THE PHANTOM MENACE Along for the ride are Sam Huntington as Eric, Linus' one-time best friend, who is pulled back into the fray for this journey even though old wounds haven't completely healed. Dan Fogler and Jay Baruchel are also on board as Hutch and Windows. And Kristen Bell's Zoe is just so cute you want to put her in your pocket... and never let her go.
The gang goes on their own personal odyssey of geekdom, during which bonds are reformed and hilarity ensues with alarming regularity. Some of the cameos are inspired, but I don't think any of them made me laugh harder than, well, let's just say that one actor plays multiple parts so effectively, I almost didn't recognize him. Perhaps the most incredible cameo is all of the licensed STAR WARS paraphernalia. It's pretty clear that Lucasfilm cleared a great deal of what is seen and heard in this movie, and you have to give them credit for having a sense of humor about it all. It's almost impossible for me to imagine anyone who give a shit about STAR WARS at any point in their lives not finding this movie laugh-out-loud funny and moving. Put aside all thoughts of what came before, all of the studio mishandling and interference, all of the reshoots and delays. All that matters is this version of this movie. I happen to think you are going to love FANBOYS to death.

Here are the final actual numbers for the weekend:
Total = $171,533
Per screen avg. = $3,898
That's a pretty decent number. Anything over $3000 per screen is very good.
Offline
And yet people are saying it would've needed about $10,000 per screen to justify expanding.

That's the craziest number I ever heard. Not one single film in this weekend's top 53 movies made anything close to that amount.
It is almost unheard of.

Thank Heavens! I thought it sounded a little far-fetched, but I don't really follow box office that closely. Nice to know there's a chance. Can you think of any movies that made that much in that many theaters with ZERO advertising and expanded?

Kyle had this JoBlo interview posted on his Facebook. He doesn't really say anything new, but he's relaxed and cute in it. And that JoBlo guy's just fun to look at. Heh. And TeeJay, you'll appreciate all the intrusive background noise almost throughout. I was half-expecting a buzzsaw or a jackhammer to start up before it was overwith.

Wow, that's a tough one. It's so hard to compare.
All the Pretty Horses was a Weinstein film that opened at $879/screen and went on to make $15,540,353.
Balto opened at $1,065/screen and went on to make $11,348,324.
Firehouse Dog opened at $1,342/screen and went on to make $13,932,383.
It's hard to compare by theater counts.

Well, you know the rumor is that they're only going to expand to 4 more cities and then they're done with theatrical. They seem to want to release the DVD in May. Does that sound reasonable? Even though I've been told it's not true, there's a lot of doubt that they'll go any further with it the expansion.

I want to avoid posting anything negative about the film as per Deb but I can tell you a few things that generally apply across the board in the industry.
First, a 3-month DVD window is not unusual. The average is 4 months but 3 is not that uncommon.
Distributors usually have a target they hope to hit after opening weekend and expansion is mostly based on that. Another thing to consider is that when a theater books a film it's usually a 2-3 week contract so you generally won't see a film only play for a week.
In addition to opening weekend box office there is word-of-mouth and reviews. Positive response from the public and media will occasionally have as much or more impact on a film's expansion than opening weekend box office. Sometimes more important than actual box office is percent drop (or increase) from day to day and week to week.
So you have those 3 factors: box office, word-of-mouth, and reviews. There are other financial and political factors too -- for example, a promise of a film playing x number of weeks in exchange for another film down the line. But you generally need decent theatrical take, buzz on the street, and favorable response from critics for expansion to take place.

There's a really cool interview with Dan & Chris done at the premiere that Kristen shows up i the middle of, but it won't play past minute 7:40 and it's 9:37 long. Sure would love to see the rest of that. Has anyone else seen it all the way through? The Collider junket interview with Dan also stalls out.

It's a shame it probably won't come to theaters in Georgia. Hopefully the DVD will really come out in May.

Yeah, Donna, TeeJay, Anne & I saw it on a relatively big screen with a very good crowd who was way into it in October of last year. Carol saw it Houston. Larry saw it. Anyone else...?
Mel, don't give up yet. Rumor has it that it will at least expand to Atlanta and three other cities before all is said and done. If it does, we'll have to organize a screening.

I watched it last night when I saw the link Kyle posted on Facebook. I'm glad he's speaking freely about all the cuts and reshoots now. I'm not sure what you mean with the comment about the background noise, though. I heard that, but I didn't find it too distracting.

I think I only saw the one where Chris and Sam are being interviewed together at the press junket. Will grab this one when I get home.
Did anyone else notice that Frosty called Sam Huntington Sam Worthington? I was reading that and kept asking myself, who is Sam Worthington??

I can't really say from here at work, but I'd like to think so. I saved the one with Chris, so I don't see why I wouldn't be able to save the one with Dan.
