Re: Twilight (contains spoilers for all books and the movies)

Well, yeah if Edward wasn't around.  Obviously.  But Jake never accepted her relationship with Edward, which always pissed me off.   If he cared about her, he wouldn't care who she was with as long as she was happy.  But he just wanted her to be with him, even if it made her miserable to be away from Edward.

And you won't get hated for it.  Unless you count what I just wrote hate.  Jacob fans outnumber Edward fans here.

Re: Twilight (contains spoilers for all books and the movies)

Honestly i always found that Bella lead Jake on a fair bit. He was clear about how he felt for her but she was always vague, especially in New Moon when Edward disappeared for awhile. That and i cant see Edward really doing any different if the situations were reversed.

But with the hatred thing I only meant that so many cult status fans wont hear a bad word being said about Edward without getting defensive. There were so many times reading the books that i just kept thinking how unappealing a sulking guy is. Dont get me wrong i am still a fan. But i can still see the faults in a person without it being the end of the world. I really am quite excited for this next movie to come out....

Well, my not-boyfriend is a sulking guy who thinks someone slamming the door is the end of the world.  He's not much fun, but there's just something about brooding boys...

For all intents and purposes, he's my boyfriend.  But there's some issues that mean we can't date, so he's not my boyfriend.  So he became my not-boyfriend.  We can't just say we aren't together, because that's too simple of an explanation.

You should read the books first though, Deb. I really think you would like the books better.

It sounds a little like what I have going on with Ralf. Though maybe that's different. I just spend a lot of time with him, just because we get along really well and we're both single. But I'm not in love with him, so there's nothing sexual about it. And I'm as sure as I can be that he's not in love with me (and, yes, I believe it is possible for a man and a woman to be "just friends"). It's just that recently we've been hanging out a lot, so sometimes I feel like we're an old married couple. What's kinda funny is that people at the Trekdinner really think we are together, and it's even more fun to keep them guessing. tongue

Re: Twilight (contains spoilers for all books and the movies)

Oh, and I'd like to add that I'm also impartial where Jake and Edward are concerned. I like both a fair bit, but they also both have their flaws. They're very territorial of Bella, and they both have such a strong will. Love can be so complicated, and it can make people do strange things that can't really be explained rationally. Of course Jake should back off and leave Bella be when she so clearly told him he can't have her, but I can also understand the part of Jacob that wants to keep fighting. Hope dies last, you know? (That's a German saying we have.) And for those who've read book 4, well, I think there's a fairly happy ending in that one, right? And it also explains a little better why Jacob was so enamored with Bella.

What kinda annoys me about Edward is that sometimes he's such a stubbornly overprotective SOB. I can see where he's coming from, seeing how Bella is the klutzy danger magnet and a fragile human to boot, but seriously? Making her stay away from Jacob at any cost was such a macho move. Was he afraid Jacob could win her heart over after all? Seriously, Edward, not gonna happen.

And, Deb? I know you're not especially keen on delving into the Twilight saga, but I agree with Mel. If you really wanna watch the movie some day, I would strongly recommend reading the books first. Most people who haven't read the books say the movie was crap. And I sort of understand. The movie, by itself, really isn't all that great. If you've read the books and keep in mind that the movie was shot on an independent budget, it is actually quite likable. Of course the movie also ommits a lot of details, but if you've read the books, at least you can piece those missing pieces together and fill the blanks in your mind.

Re: Twilight (contains spoilers for all books and the movies)

Hee.  Laura's situation is nothing like you and Ralf.  Unless she feels like explaining, we should probably just leave it at that.  When she says her situation is complicated, she ain't just (as they say) whistlin' Dixie.  I would venture a guess that none of the rest of us have been in her shoes.

Someone gave the first two books to Dave's mom --- probably the last person on earth who will ever get into them.  Maybe she'll pass them along to me when she realizes they are not her cuppa.  But honestly, I just don't have much of a desire to read them.  I'm still on my year and a half long Whitley Strieber kick that looks like it will only end when I run out of books.  And then I have a whole nother pile of stuff people have given me that I want to read.  I'm only really interested in the movie because I like Kristen Stewart.  If she wasn't in it, this whole thing wouldn't have even been a blip on my radar, beyond watching a cultural phenomenon from a safe distance.

And I'm getting my vampire fix with magnificent True Blood, which just started its second season Sunday before last.

Re: Twilight (contains spoilers for all books and the movies)

Yeah, Deb knows all the gory details of me and Shawn.  And, yes, it's Shawn that should give you a hint about why it's so confusing.  It's one big confusing ball of dramatic mush.  Every single day.  And we're more than "just friends" but not really.   There's no easy way to describe it without going deep into it.  And that wouldn't be easy.

The books really aren't for everyone, but I agree that it does increase your enjoyment of the movie.  My cousin saw the movie with his girlfriend, hated it, then when she told him to read the books he borrowed Twilight off of me and it's taken him almost seven months to get halfway through.  And he reads extremely fast.

Yeah, I know that. I was just consfused. We were talking about Twilight yesterday and the next time I visit this thread there's a discussion about relationships between men and women. As far as I could follow it, I mean.

I'm with you here. Edward was a complete jerk in parts and so was Jacob. That whole love triangle brought out the worst in all of them, I think. I must say that I'm a bit of a sucker for the 'Fire and Ice' chapter where they have their first somewhat civil conversation about the whole thing.

Yes, that was very well done, and I enjoyed that too. I'm currently re-reading the books, actually, and since I recently finished book 3, that scene's pretty fresh in my mind.

Re: Twilight (contains spoilers for all books and the movies)

Found another Mike-Mike-interview.

'Twilight' Star Michael Welch: Jealous of Edward and Jacob?

Sounds like one of the Twilight humans has a case of supernatural sour grapes.

Interviewed on Film Festival Radio, Michael Welch, who plays Mike Newton - Bella Swan's human suitor - tells us he's none too keen on the monsters who populate the smash-hit flick.

"I was afraid of vampires as a child," he tells host Janice Malone. "Because we have no power as humans.
CAPTION: "It's gonna get a little darker as we go along, and appeal to guys a bit more," Michael (above) tells us of the "Twilight' sequels.

"It's gonna get a little darker as we go along, and appeal to guys a bit more," Michael (above) tells us of the "Twilight" sequels.

"It's like, if you're in the ocean and you're confronted by a shark, you're out of your element. If that shark wants to eat you, you're going to be eaten. Similar with vampires.

"I've thought over the years - I've thought a lot about this - if I'd want to be a vampire. Because there's a lot of elements of it that are so cool and sexy and dark and interesting," he continues.

"But the thing that I've come across over and over again, in researching it and thinking about it, is that they're miserable, miserable people. So I don't think I would want to be a vampire."

Michael also hints that, in Twilight's upcoming sequel, New Moon, the green-eyed monster may be partly responsible for his aversion to non-humans.

"My role as Mike Newton, a high school kid who continues to have a crush on Bella, stays the same," he says.

"I don't get to be involved in all this vampire-werewolf fun action," he adds, referring to the respective roles of Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).

The Twilight Saga: New Moon opens November 20.

That not-boyfriend-situation sounds somewhat interesting to me.

When it comes to the characters, I've always liked Jacob better than Edward. MIght just be my facination with wolves. lol And he seems very awesome perosn all together. I don't even mind his temper. He actually reminds me of my hubby. ♥ Well, actually my hubby is liek a mix between Jacob and Jasper. smile
