Laura, thing is, there are MANY really good native actors. I don't know any who are young enough for that role. A few years ago, you might've had Simon Baker or Cody Lightning, but they're both too old now. I think what Hidethestars is saying is that it's kind of insulting that they probably didn't really, seriously try to cast it authentically. Yes, I'm sure the open call asked for native actors, but where did they hold the casting sessions? Anywhere near a heavily populated native area? Probably not.
OK, Hide, what can we call you? It's very cool to meet a native. Please tell us about yourself.

I'm sure there are good native actors. I'm sure there's good native teen actors in Portland, where the casting call was. But what probably happened is that none of them were enough like Jacob. He has very distinct characteristics, especially in the second and third books. Yes, we're getting jipped of a real Native American but the filmmakers needed to make a call. With every character. When you're making a film out of the most famous teen books of the decade, a lot of strings needed to be cut and lines crossed character-wise.
I understand where you guys are coming from, but after months of people whining about how the characters aren't cast right, it's really getting old.

Well, you know that it really makes no difference to me who they cast since I've never read the books and have no investment in the movies beyond the fact that Mike Welch is a cast member. I just happen to agree with Hide on this one because I also get sick of seeing "generic ethnic" casting. Good example that sprang to mind instantly... Nestor Serrano as Navi Araz on 24. When he popped up playing an Arab, I was like, WTF?!?

Anyone can come on reservations. We don't require passports! XD I'm sure that people would have shown up, if word was spread. The filmmakers of Whale Rider found Keisha Castle-Hughes by going to her school to cast the part.
Oh, Jesus. I just looked up his site and it says, "Both of my parents are caucasian. But so many people ask where I get my "tan"? Well I do get a little color from my mothers side of the family coming from the French side. Other than that the rest comes from being out in the sun. " Nice. Instead of an actual Native American (even 1/2 would do, I'm not that picky!), the character goes to a tanned, white boy. WTF, is this the 1950s??
To be honest, I'm new to the Twilight series. I just found out that Taylor is playing Jacob, though I can understand why you'd be annoyed, if you've been hearing this kind of stuff for months. It's just annoying that this is happening more and more. The girl that played Pocahontas in that Colin Farrell movie had a bit of South American indian in her, but was mostly Swedish, I think. Also, there was another movie called Pathfinder (BAD!) and the female lead was a girl of Korean, Irish, & Dutch ancestry. Um? Normally, I wouldn't care what actor got what role, but there's a principle here! I'll stop complaining, though... I guess it's kinda late to start writing letters demanding a change. ;D
My name is Courtney and I'm Mississippi Choctaw. My friend recommended Joan of Arcadia to me so, a few weeks ago, I had a marathon via netflix. Loved Adam, but love Chris more since seeing Just Friends and Alpha Dog. His range and ability to slip into such diverse characters amazes me. Needless to say, I've added more of his films to my queue. I don't really know what else to say about myself... I'm 26 and work at an elementary school, so I'll probably soon lose all will to procreate. lol.

I really do understand why you're upset with the casting of Taylor. You have a real reason to not want him in the part, which is better than the constant "she's too tall! ... he's too short! .... he doesn't look like him! .... she doesn't look like her!" And that's the stuff that really gets me.

It's so nice to meet you, Courtney. You're gonna love a lot of Chris's work you have yet to see. And remember, we have tons of video clips on here, including stuff you can't rent yet, like Huff & Strong Medicine. You've got so much great stuff ahead of you to discover about him. I almost envy you that.
I come from Appalachian (Scot-Irish) and Cherokee stock, myself. My mother swears that her father was half Cherokee, but I've never seen proof of this. My mom was one of 12 kids, raised dirt poor at the foothills of the Smokies, in north Georgia. She and all of her older brothers and sisters never even had birth certificates. I knew my grandfather a little bit and he was quite a character. He was a moonshiner during prohibition up in Acworth and Kennesaw.
Do you have any favorite native actors?

Man, that's fascinating! I think that the best I can come up of my grandparents is that they had a cotton farm. XD
I must confess that I'm not familiar with a great deal of native actors. There's Adam Beach, of course, but I can't bring myself to watch him on Law & Order. I tried and it just wasn't working for me. I think that he's very talented, though! My cousin met Gary Farmer once when she was going to Haskell Indian School and took a photo with him. Funnily enough, she also met Wes Studi, but didn't take his photo because she didn't know who he was. My family was all ! I can see faces, but right now, my mind is blanking out their names. Remember the ex-boyfriend from Dance Me Outside that was an ex-con? Sexeh! Now, I feel like I need to pull out some native films. I still haven't seen Into the West & Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.

I dig Adam on SVU. I love Gary Farmer too, and Wes, of course. In Dance Me Outside, I believe you're talking about Michael Greyeyes, though I've never seen the movie all the way through. I saw the first 45 minutes of it once. He's one of my very favorites. You wanna see sessy, check him out in the TNT movie, Crazy Horse. WOW!
I adore Graham Greene, of course. And I'm a big, big fan of those adorable Spears boys, Michael and especially Eddie. Of course, there's Irene Bedard and Tantoo Cardinal. August Schellenberg and the late, great Floyd Red Crow Westerman. But by far my favorite guy is Eric Schweig. He's had a pretty good career and just keeps growing as an artist.
I have a ton of favorite movies, and I love the two you mentioned above. I like modern native music too, Walela, Ulali, Annie Humphrey, Mary Youngblood. I got turned on to it through Robbie Robertson's stuff with the Red Road Ensemble. You ever heard any of that stuff?

Michael Greyeyes, yes! Make my knees weak. XD Oh, I adore Floyd Westerman. Years and years ago, my dad made me a tape of his first album. I haven't listened to it in a long time because I don't have a tape player anymore, but the song Mama used to make me cry all the time. /sap. I want to learn to play some of his songs on the guitar. ...If I could play my guitar.
I don't listen to any native artists, though some do play at our fair every year (http://www.choctawindianfair.com/). I like The Bastard Fairies, though their lyrics and music are a bit... lacking. The lead singer, Yellow Thunder Woman, is Sioux, I think. Also, I believe that her brother and sister are in some blues (or jazz) band, but I forget the name. ...I feel like I just hijacked this thread. Apologies to the original poster!

Yeah, I guess we could take this elsewhere. But do check out this CD if you can. It's a part of me.
You know what? I didn't even know Red Crow (he told me in a prophetic dream to call him that) was a musician. I just listened to some samples on Amazon. That's so cool! What a treasure that man was.
Interestingly, Eric Schweig was adopted by a white family and grew up partly in Germany. He sculpts these beautiful adoption masks...
Plus, just look at him...

Thanks for the suggestion. I want to get into native bands, but don't know where to look. My uncle says that XIT and, I think, Red Earth are good. Did the sample songs on amazon come from Custer Died For Your Sins or The Land Is Your Mother? The first contains his original recordings, but the latter were re-recorded because there's no recording tape (?) available for the original. They're lost to time! All that's left are old LPs. He's not the best singer in the sense that he was well-trained, but my goodness. When I listened to that record, it was like my eyes were being opened for the first time. I want to learn the songs so that I can play them in remembrance of my father. These are probably also from TLIYM, but they're the full songs: http://www.imeem.com/tag/?q=album:Custe … er&f=music "35 More Miles" (not titled "Mama" as I had previously said) is particularly beautiful to me. The struggle it paints for you. My heart weeps. /sappy.
To bring this thread back on topic, I have to mention that I saw this interview that MTV did with Taylor Lautner: http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles … tory.jhtml In the video, there is a half-second clip of him with a long wig on. From the side, I SWEAR, he looks like he could be a younger Adam Beach. That alone may have won me over. Too bad he didn't just grow out his hair. I hope it doesn't look like a bad wig in the film.

There are so many wigs going on in that movie, you'll hardly notice Taylor's. I think he did try to grow his hair out, but couldn't quickly enough. He said somewhere his hair grows very slowly and it's been at the length it is now forever. And be careful watching those videos, you'll spoil yourself for New Moon

The movie or the book? I did a bit of speed reading and have finished all three. *dork* Don't know how I'll last through this month, so I'm going to re-read them all again. Now, I know what heroin addicts feel like. ;D

Yeah... I got New Moon and Eclipse, last Friday. I stayed up until 5 am to finish New Moon. Despite my promise to give myself a rest, I picked up Eclipse on Saturday afternoon and finished Sunday night. My friends interrupted me and I got so upset. lol.

Kristen Stewart = Cover Girl? Sure looks like it. She's also featured on the cover of the new issue of Vanity Fair. Inside the magazine, she confesses her love for boyfriend Michael Angarano (who is also featured among the 27 young stars of "future Hollywood"). At least that lays the rumors to rest.

That Vanity Fair list depresses the hell out of me. It's missing someone who very much deserves to be on it.

No, not in a good way. Especially if they're supposed to look like Bella and Edward and not Kristen and Rob. Because yeah... no. Of course, Kristen looks amazing but honestly... put that girl in a potato sack and she'll still look like a super model. Rob just looks horrible.
