God, this movie is gonna be eye-popping! Wish I could see it in IMAx.
BTW guys, Abbie asked if Chris was going to the Speed Racer premiere. I don't see why not. Emile went to his premiere week before last. And they share both the same manager and the same agent now. Since they're working so hard to raise his profile right now, I'm sure they would want Chris to get out there and be photographed at a huge event like this one promises to be. So everyone keep your eyes peeled this weekend. The premiere is Saturday, 4/26.

wow the colours are so vibrant. You know this one will be winning an oscar for visuals, effects or something...I am not exactly up on my award categories.

Premiere pics. As far as I could see no Chris.
So neat that they had a full size Mach 5 replica at the premiere.

Yeah, either Chris wasn't there or he wasn't caught on photo. WireImage didn't seem to have a lot of photos of people who weren't involved in the movie, though. Nothing on Getty either so far. Maybe there were too many celebs to take pics of everyone?
EDIT: They've uploaded more pictures by now, but I say it's unlikely Chris was there. I've looked at over 500 thumbnails and Chris isn't in any of the pictures, neither of the arrivals nor at the Puma thing nor at the after-party. If he was there, he must have had a real good trick up his sleeve to dodge the photographers.

Well, if he wasn't photographed, he wasn't there. Because the only reason they would've made sure to get him out there was to get him seen and photographed. That's really bloody stupid of Sam & Shani not to get him out there to be seen. So much for them trying really hard to raise his profile, huh? I'm very disappointed in them. I thought they'd be all over this one.

We don't know if maybe he had other committments. Maybe they wanted him there and he couldn't go for whatever reason. I wouldn't blame this one on Shani and Sam just yet.

<writes e-mail to Chris> "Hey, man, why didn't you turn up at the Speedracer premiere, dude? We all had our eyes peeled to our monitors for yummy pictures of your lovely mug. You better have a good excuse for not dragging your sorry butt there, Mister!"

She was kidding, Mel. Sorry.
I was 95% sure she was joking. It would be really cool though if TJ really had sent it.

Chris and we aren't tight enough to pull that kind of joke on him. He might take it the wrong way. Better not risk that.

I picked up the Target exclusive dvd this morning.
Sorry it's so small but got it off the Target site.
Anyways, it runs 31 minutes and has many of the cast in a "mockumentary" about the Racer family. Of course some new scenes from the film are shown.

Instead of one of the Movie Money tickets I got three.
Since I don't go to the theater anymore, I'll either keep them or give one or two to a friend.

If Larry reads this I have a question.
Larry, did you watch the original 1967 Speed Racer cartoon and how does the movie compare to the cartoon it's based on. Is it faithful to it?

Thanks so much for posting the link. It is much appreciated.
I did watch the original cartoon but I honestly don't remember much about it. I was a wee wittle baby. From what I can recall the original was very much in the Japanese anime tradition of sharp lines and fast action. In that sense, yes, it holds true to it.
As far as the storyline goes, I honestly have no recollection at all of any of the story from the original. I can only remember the look and the theme song.
Sorry, wish I could be of more help. :embarrassed:

Oh ok.
I have a few other questions.
I'll try to be as general as I can.
As far as I can see from the trailers there are 3 Mach cars.
1. A Red Mach 4
2. The more famous white Mach 5 (kind of looks like a 1950's car with fins)
3. The more advanced white Mach 6
OK, what is the deal with the Mach 4 and who drives it?
How much is the Mach 5 in the film?
Same thing for the Mach 6.
Are the races hard to follow at times? In general are the races shown close up or so far away that the cars are too small to make out and follow who is who?
In the cartoon there was many car crashes that resulted in obvious deaths, does that happen as well in the film.
And one last question, do they use the original theme song from the cartoon in the film at all, if so did they change it at all to "update" it?
If you can't answer that's ok.

I'll do the best I can without posting spoilers -- I think the plot points I mention are all common knowledge or are known right from the start of the film.
The red Mach 4 is driven by Rex Racer. Speed drives the white Mach 5 until, at some point, it is destroyed and when they rebuild it they name it 6.
The Mach 5 is the car featured throughout most of the film. However, Rex's "ghost" and "ghost car" ride with Speed in much of the film so that you see both the red Mach 4 and white Mach 5 parallel to each other in many races.
Are the races hard to follow at times? In general are the races shown close up or so far away that the cars are too small to make out and follow who is who?
YES, they are hard to follow much of the time. That was my #1 main problem with the film (as well as most of the people I know who've seen it). The races are shown both too close up and too far away to really figure out who is whom and where they are in the race. It's just a complete mess. But maybe I'm just too old. I had no clue what was going on in most of the races.
In the cartoon there was many car crashes that resulted in obvious deaths, does that happen as well in the film.
Yes and no. There are many car crashes but nobody dies -- it's very cleaned up Disney-style. People magically emerge alive no matter how bad the crashes are.
And one last question, do they use the original theme song from the cartoon in the film at all, if so did they change it at all to "update" it?
Yes, they very very cleverly insert a bit of it. It almost goes by unnoticed unless you know the theme, and it brought a big smile to my face. That was actually one of my favorite things about the film.
