Message Board announcements

I'll have to switch the message board to "debug" mode tonight for a little while to find out why the form e-mail function isn't working. I've never done that before, so I don't know if it'll affect the functionality of the forum. So if the forum isn't working the way it usually does today, that's probably the reason why.

I'll do my very best. I'll also make sure to make a backup before I attempt messing with it. We'll have to do a whole MB overhaul when version 1.3 comes out anyway, a lot of the plugins and modifications I'm now using won't be readily available for the new version. But I'll deal with that when 1.3 is ready to be used.

Okay, so debug mode was really harmless. I pasted the error message for the PunBB geeks on their support forum. Let's hope they know how to fix the problem. Cross your fingers.

Hi guys,

I would like to apologize for the disgusting, reprehensible SPAM posts that keep turning up in the Guestbook. I'm deleting them as soon as I see them, but they're coming in so fast, I probably won't be able to keep up with them. Until we can resolve this problem, please just try and ignore them and know that I will clear them out as quickly as possible.

I'm not sure if this will work or not, but I blocked posts to the Guestbook by anyone who's not registered. For now, maybe that will stop the spam. But it also means that guests can't post there. That pretty much means Will, since all the rest of us are registered. Will, I'm sorry about that. You should register anyway, really. Maybe TeeJay can find a better solution when she gets back. Until then, if I did it right, the Guestbook is closed to guests.

There's no person behind this, exactly, Mel. They're spamBOTS. It's a computer program that just keeps sending automatically from different addresses. Still sucks, though.

Just quickly checking in while I'm on my colleague's computer. Don't think we can do anything about the spamming other than closing the guestbook to unregistered users, which is what I guess you've already done. I mean, I could look into anti-spamming tools (like captcha), but I don't really want to before we upgrade to version 1.3 of the forum. Sorry about that, but it was bound to happen at some point, so it doesn't come entirely unexpected.
