Just posting a few rants.
1. Why do some care about box-office?
Personally I could care less how much a film makes at the box office, but it seems many do for some reason. They'll scream with glee that a certain movie is making a killing at the box office, while others will be full of delight when a film flops at the box office. Why? Is it the whole "race-horse" mentality that unless you're #1 then you don't matter and are a complete and utter loser/failure?
2. Awards.
Almost the same thing with the box-office. I can see the importance to some about certain awards, such as the Oscars, but again it seems to some that if a certain film didn't win then it's a loser/failure. When only a few films are even nominated, those that are nominated should be praised for their excellence in those fields. But there are many good films each year that aren't even nominated for anything, and sometimes these are better then those that were nominated. I'll admit that when I was younger I used to follow awards quite closely, but it has become less important if a film wins an award or not. Plus films today just don't seem to be as remarkable as films made decades ago.
3. People picking movies apart.
Why does it seem to me that people just love to pick apart a movie more today then before? They'll find every little thing wrong with a film and only point those things out. It seems that they don't go to movies to be entertained anymore, but go to nitpick every detail in the film.
I could, if I want to, find faults with just about every movie ever made. Scenes I don't like or actors who don't give a good performance. I look at the film as a whole first, and if those faults don't completely ruin the film then it doesn't really ruin the film for me at all.
4. People who think that their "opinion" is the only correct one and puts down others with opposing opinions.
This is mostly found on IMDB, but I just hate when people think that their opinion is the only correct one and think those with opposing opinions are idiots/morons or a favorite term used on IMDB "retard". What in the hell is wrong with these people?
Instead of posting something like "I think this movie is crap.", they post it as fact "This movie is crap."
Or they put down fans of a movie and automatically call them "fanboys", or even worse a "stan" if someone really likes a certain star.
I just wish that people wouldn't get so hung up up box-office & awards and go see a movie regardless of those things and try and enjoy movies instead of being an amateur "back of the movie theater" critic.

1. I only care about box office when it's a movie I really want to succeed, then I enjoy rooting for it because I know that the people who made it are gonna get rewarded for having made a successful movie with future work. If I like somebody that makes me happy. I'll get to see them again. The two specific times I was truly thrilled by box office was watching Silence Of The Lambs and The Sixth Sense do gangbuster business, against expectations.
Also, I wouldn't mind seeing all of Shia LeBeouf's movies totally tank at the box office so I wouldn't have to look at his arrogant mug anymore for a while. And it would be awesome if all the stupid parody movies suddenly started bombing left and right so the world can be free of them.
2. I love the Oscars, and the SAGs and the Independent Spirit Awards for the same reason I like to see great movies do well at the box office. Award success means future jobs and that's what it's all about, getting to see great artist do more fine work.
3. I've never been one to pick movies apart. If anything, I'm often accused of being too forgiving and uncritical. I could never be a film critic because unless something is truly horrible, I just can't be mean to it. Well, unless it's got that creep Shia in it. The truth is, I love a lot of bad movies --- or at least movies that most people consider bad.
4. Yeah, that one really bugs me. But what's worse on IMDb is this need some people have to go on boards for people or movies they don't like and just trash the hell out of them. What's that about? Take, for instance my extreme Shia aversion. Would I ever go on his IMDb board and say nasty things about him? No. Because his fans don't wanna hear it and I do understand that it's just my opinion. It's not like I'm trying to make everyone else hate him. I couldn't give a crap what people think of him. And my loathe for him is essentially meaningless.
I also don't get why some people on IMDb single out other people for harrassment and no matter what they post, these stalkers just have to trash it. I've had two nutballs like that latch onto me and it's mighty unpleasant. Even more so when they follow you from one board to another. IMDb is just a freaky place. But I tell you what, it's far more civilized than AICN's Talkback. That MB is an unedited, unmonitored, super-nasty free-for-all. I can't read too much of it before my head wants to explode.
BTW, what's a "stan"? I've never heard that one before.

1. I can honestly say, I don't give a shit. Might also be because I'm in Germany and we usually don't hear so much about how well a movie does at the box office. Of course I'm happy if a movie I think highly of does well, but my like or dislike of a movie has nothing to do with how well it does at the BO.
2. I don't watch them. Well, maybe unless Chris is given something. Same thing. If someone gets an award that I think highly of, I'm happy. Otherwise, I couldn't care less. Besides, I'm convinced they're corrupt anyway. There is no such thing as unbiased or unifluenced voting in Hollywood.
3. I don't get that either. Sure, sometimes I notice blatant inconsistencies, but usually only after the second or third time I watch a movie or after someone else tells me. For me too, a movie and its impression on me counts as a whole and not as the sum of its parts. It can be fun picking on little details, but only if you don't trash the movie at the same time. (Can you say "blood-on-door" for Graduation?)
4. Beats me. I hate it too. Look at what Deb just posted on Chris's IMDb board the other day. No one's remotely interested in the fact that Chris is doing really well, has new projects lined up and that things are good in the Marquette camp. Instead they prefer posting meaningless crap like the hundredth comparison of Chris to other actors, which are often a REAL stretch (I mean, Paul Dano????). You know, or people posting that he's so horrible at acting, he should find another profession. Hello?? Trash-talk much? Harrr, I need to stop talking about this, otherwise I'm gonna get all riled up.
Illinois, I'm right with you on all four counts. And I don't understand it either.

From urban dictionary;
Stan
"a "stan" is an overzealous maniacal fan for any celebrity or athlete."
I didn't know what it was either until I saw someone call someone that on IMDB. So I looked it up.

How is it used in a sentence? I don't understand the etymology.

Basically someone just accuses someone of being a stan.
Examples of a stan from urbandictionary.com:
A Typical Kobe Bryant Stan would say something like.
"Kobe Bryant scored 81 points last night. Kobe could beat God himself in a game of 1 on 1 hoops. To hell with Michael Jordan or Wilt Chamberlain, they arent on Kobe's level!"
an overobsessed fan to the point of following a star around.
It is formed from the words stalker and fan.
Stalker + fan = stan.
I'm trying to watch a Amerie video and all of these Beyonce stans keep saying "Amerie sucks, Beyonce's better."

I can think of a certain Emile fan who sounds very much like an ER character that I'd call a stan.

A majority of us here are stans. But we're all harmless... to a degree :embarrassed:
And TeeJay, I think you were talking about a nurse on ER, correct?

Dude, we're not stans. Superfans, yes. Stans, nope.

Maybe a superfan is a harmless stan.
Laura, I was talking about a nurse who then became a doctor.

There's nothing harmless about stalking. And we dont do that. So we're not stans.

I definitely agree with you. I find 95% + of the users on IMDB jerks. The moderators don't even try to do anything about it and stop the people being obscene. People on IMDB don't think and don't understand what the word "opinion" means.

I think what's even worse is when girls on IMDB talk about wanting to be Chris's gf and having his "beautiful" babies. Does anyone on here remember that girl Waanief? She is like an obsessed stalker.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to meet your favorite celebrity. There's also nothing wrong with daydreaming about that if it ever happens, he'll really like you and fall in love with you and maybe even marry you. But the truth is, in a very high percentage of all cases, that won't happen. No one says it can't happen, it's just not very likely. And when people expect it to happen and live their lives with with only the thought in mind that that dream is going to come true, that's when it gets scary.
The hard truth is, Chris lives and works in Hollywood. He is surrounded by beautiful women every day. Why would he want to or have to look elsewhere? I certainly hope that he's gonna find the woman of his dreams some time in the near future. (And I know it ain't me.) All I care about is that he's happy. And of course it'd be cool if we liked his woman too (whatever we can base "liking her" on).
Gee, how is that for a rant?

Sorry I am late to this discussion, but I have some thought about the original questions.
1) I do care about the box office. I don't let it affect what I go see, but it matters as to who gets to keep making films and who doesn't. So, I want small films by talented filmakers to do well at the box office so that they will get to make more films. If "Momento" hadn't done surprisingly well at the box office, we wouldn't have "Batman Begins". And that is true of almost every filmaker out there.
And in the same vein, I always hope that films by hacks who shouldn't be making movies will fail. Because everytime Renny Harlan gets to make a movie, a more talented filmaker is being kept from making one.
2) pretty much the same as above.
3)picking a film apart is pointless, just read the goofs on IMDB. I will say that sometimes a small detail can ruin a film for a viewer, and I don't consider that to be picking a film apart.
4) & 5) that is why I find the discussions here to be sooo much better.
Joan: So, my true nature is to be a catalyst? That is mad anti-climatic.
God: Anti climactic. Anti-climatic means you're against the weather.
