Just Friends

Deb's first impressions when she came back from watching Just Friends in the theater:

OK,

My brown hoodie and I just got home from seeing "Just Friends". First impressions?

Ryan Reynolds has absolutely no shame.

This movie makes "The Girl Next Door" look like Tolstoy.

Chris is a really great physical comedian.

Poor Julie Haggerty.

Someday, Ryan Reynolds will have a hit movie. But once again, this ain't it.

Chris is the most adorable horndog ever.

I really miss the days when a comedy like this would've been rated R, and therefore edgier and maybe funnier.

I liked the wardrobe they stuck Chris in, especially the Dazed & Confused t-shirt. And the striped touque.

It's not the worst movie I've ever paid to see because I love a supporting player in it. Not even close.

See, Canadian movies don't have to be slow and boring. They can be just as goofy and over-the-top as American ones.

Chris has the cutest girly scream ever.

God, I miss "Joan Of Arcadia".

Re: Just Friends

Having seen the movie probably five times now, I can say that my first impressions still hold.  It's very silly, but it doesn't suck, particularly if you like any of the featured actors.  Chris is very funny and adorable as always.  It's worth a rental, especially if you do Netflix.  You got nothing to lose.

Re: Just Friends

Well, we already had the gross kiss from JF nominated for the MTV Movie Awards. Seems like it's made it as yet another awards nomination:

Following is the list of categories and nominees for Wave Two of TEEN CHOICE 2006.

Movies - Choice Liplock
Amanda Bynes & Channing Tatum, She's the Man
Anna Faris & Chris Marquette, Just Friends
Famke Janssen & Hugh Jackman, X-Men: The Last Stand
Keanu Reeves & Sandra Bullock, The Lake House
LL Cool J & Queen Latifah, Last Holiday
Rachel McAdams & Owen Wilson, Wedding Crashers

This sounds like something really silly, Teen Choice Awards. Like where all the pimply pubescent horndogs vote for who they find the hottest. Not a great honor, I think. But still, it means that he's getting recognized out there. Yay!! smile

Re: Just Friends

So I guess I'll be watching the Teen Choice Awards & preshow Sunday night.  It's a pretty silly show and pointless award.  And they won't win anyway, but what if he's there like at the MTV Movie Awards and maybe he makes it on camera this time?

Re: Just Friends

Can you tape it and keep it until I come over? Just in case he's there, I'd want to make some vidcaps or screencaps (if the quality is good enough). I don't think I can make any SM caps that are halfway decent off the video you sent, Deb. But it works fine for vidcaps, so that alone was worth the postage. Not to mention being able to see Marc in that tux. But that's another story for another thread. Crossing my fingers that you'll get a glimpse of Chris. Is that a live show this weekend?

Re: Just Friends

I don't know if it's live or not.  Probably.  And he's not listed as an attendee on the website, but that doesn't mean much.  If he is in town, he'll probably go.  All nominees are invited to the show.  Of course I will tape it.  If he's there, great, if not, I'll just tape over it.  And you know I'll post any sightings as soon as they happen.

Chris is not on the list of guests but Kristen Bell is.  That doesn't mean he's not there as a nominee though.  Didn't see him in the pre-show.

Re: Just Friends

Good, I can stop watching this now.  The Kiss was the 2nd category and they didn't show any of the nominees in the audience.  Keanu & Sandra won for whatever that movie is called.  They announced his name as Christopher, unlike the MTV Awards.  That's all I have to report.  Sean's on in 40 minutes.

Well, that leaves us pining for one of his movies to come out. He really doesn't give his fans a lot of interim screen exposure, does he? Who knows what project he's off to right now. Probably working his ass off, the little gorgeous rubber face that he is. Maybe he's already working on My Tutor.

Yeah, I think so too. And by the way, the Keanu Reeves/Sandra Bullock movie is called The Lake House.

Re: Just Friends

I just saw a little snippet from the Award show on TV. Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom both won a surfboard. What cool award! LOL
And there was something that really shocked me. Britney Spears introduced her husband as a singer. Seriously, they call THAT crap "music"? yikes

Well, it's not the right thread for discussing it (and I think this isn't necessary either), just wanted to say this.

Re: Just Friends

Look what Ain't It Cool News says about Chris:

But what really lets Reynolds do his thing is the group of comedians surrounding him. Most notable among them is young actor Chris Marquette, best known as the porn loving Eli in The Girl Next Door, who steals scene after scene as Reynolds' younger brother. While his role almost entirely consists of himself and Reynolds beating the crap out of one another or joking about how many times in a day he masturbates, Marquette delivers them with all the sleazy charm of a young Willy Ames and has earned a place as my favorite goofy sleazebag sidekick since George Clooney's turn in Return of the Killer Tomatoes. While the comedy he is a part of really is lowest common denominator fare, Marquette peppers it with just the right amount of brotherly affection to make it genuine, bringing it up out of the gutter and into the realm of the truly funny.

Wow, he got compared to George Clooney! That's a praise (for such a role LOL)!
But I have one little question: Who is Willy Ames? Never heard of that name.

Re: Just Friends

Not so great being compared to Willie Aames.  He was a kid/teen actor/pin-up boy in the late 70's to early 80's.  He never was a very good actor and he was an even worse "musician".  But the girlies loved him.  Probably all that curly hair.  I don't get the comparison at all.  And Willie became a druggie/drop-out/loser when his teen career dried up.  Now, he pops up on celeb-reality crap shows like, Celebrity Fit Club throwing tantrums in a bath-towel.  Please, lets' forget this comparison ever happened.

I'll take the Clooney one though.

Re: Just Friends

Ok, so the Willy Ames thing is no good comparision. Luckily we know that Chris is an amazing actor. (Not sure about the musician, though. wink )
And let's hope Chris will NEVER get in touch with drugs ... I can handle the smoking but I'll never accept drugs. Yeah, let's forget this comparison.

Re: Just Friends

Oh, and finally Chris is coming to German movie screens! (Only a year after the US release...) German release date for Just Friends is apparently Dec 21, 2006. Yay! If they show it without dubbing, I'll be the first in line to see Chris's adorable rubber face plastered all over the silver screen. If not, I might just watch it to get annoyed at how badly they translated it and how much his dubbing voice sucks. I hope it's at least gonna be the same one they used in JoA. I think Ozan Ünal was the guy's name, he must be of Turkish descent. How weird is that?

Re: Just Friends

Yeah, that's kinda weird. But it's the same guy as in GND and JoA. I really hope, I can catch JF without dubbing here too, though I doubt that they will show this movie undubbed. But you can never know ...

Re: Just Friends

I waited till Just Friends was out on DVD and rented it, because I usually loathe teen comedies.  This was no exception.  I had to fast-forward, a number of times, because I can't stand mean-spirited "humor".  I thought Chris seemed to be having fun with the role, and I hoped he was paid well for it and actually enjoyed it.  For me as a viewer, though, as TeeJay said, it made TGND look like literature in comparison.  It looks like the movie did pretty well at the box office, and it may have earned Chris some new fans.  So far, every time Ain't It Cool has reviewed a movie Chris is in, they're at least positive about him.

Re: Just Friends

Shari, you have no idea how long it took me to watch this movie. Truth be told, I downloaded it off the internet at first (I have the DVD now). And I had it for almost two months before I first watched it. Why? Because, just like you, I don't like these kind of ditsy American Pie-like comedies. I did watch the whole movie without fast forwarding (once), and I just love the Chris bits in it. He's so wonderfully silly in it, and we just love the adorable rubber faced lunacy he displays.

As to the movie as a whole? Pretty crappy, if you ask me. I've seen worse, sure, but this is not a movie I would recommend to others. If it hadn't been for Chris, I absolutely would not have watched it. And I love Chris enough that I would pay money to watch it again when it comes to German theaters. But only for Chris.

Re: Just Friends

I second what TeeJay said, I don't like the movie as a whole either, I just love the Chris parts. LOL I mean, I prefer him doing drama, but JF is a "nice" possibility to make myself laugh. Thank God there's also GND, this is a comedy I like to watch more than once, but I don't think I would spend any money for Just Friends if there wasn't Chris in it.
