Kid Cannabis

Guess we should start a new thread. Chris landed a lead in John Stockwell's movie Kid Cannabis! smile

Marquette: I'm filming "Race To Witch Mountain" right now. I'm going to be doing a movie right after that one is done. Actually, you'll be the first person to hear this. I'm trying to think if I can actually say it. OK, I can. I'm going to be doing a film called "Kid Cannabis" based on this true story that was in a Rolling Stone article. It's about this 19 year old kid who becomes a drug lord by smuggling drugs across the border between the U.S. and Canada.

M&C: A supporting role?

Marquette: The lead – I'll be playing the guy – and I'm really excited about it. It goes into production in July of this year and should be out in 2009.

ContentFilm International will handle international sales on Kid Cannabis, written and directed by John Stockwell. ICM will handle North American rights.

Stockwell previously directed Into the Blue, Blue Crush and Crazy Beautiful. The film starts shooting July 2 in Vancouver.

The film stars Chris Marquette and Aaron Yoo with more cast to be announced soon.

The teen comedy, based on a true story from Rolling Stone magazine, is about a high-school drop-out who becomes a multi-million-dollar marijuana mogul.

Ross Dinerstein and Bobby Schwartz of Eleven Eleven will produce with John Stockwell and Nicole Rocklin. Dinerstein said: "John Stockwell is a tremendous filmmaker with a great track record with fact based films."

Jamie Carmichael, President of ContentFilm International, added: "This is going to be a really commercial, high concept film from a great creative team. We're delighted to continue working with Eleven Eleven and to work with John Stockwell on Kid Cannabis."

Re: Kid Cannabis

What's interesting about this guy, Brenna is that he wasn't just a pothead.  He was smart.  He figured out how to build a business that garnered him $38 MILLION before the law finally brought him down.  So Chris also gets to have a certain laser intelligence as Nate Norman.  He put together a very adept crew of smugglers who just blew the doors off in his small Iowa town.  This is a really great story...

Re: Kid Cannabis

Aaron Yoo has a MySpace which looks like he's running it himself: http://www.myspace.com/aaronyoo Wonder what role he has in the movie. What I also didn't realize was that he was the Asian guy from Disturbia. Guess he didn't leave much of an impression on me (sorry, Aaron!). wink

Wish I could find John Stockwell online, but no luck so far. If anyone finds that he has a MySpace or Facebook or something, let me know. There's one guy named John Stockwell who has an official site, but it looks like some reporter or radio DJ and isn't the Stockwell I'm looking for.

Reportedly, someone named Brandon Hardesty is also gonna be in the movie. Never heard that name before. Check that website of his--it's a bit freaky. Though the Tribeca video is kinda interesting. And the Holy Grail re-enactment is actually really funny. His YouTube channel can be found here. Any of you know him? But think of the possibilities! If he's in the movie, I hope he does tons of video blogs of the shoot. And if so, there's a REALLY good change that Chris is gonna be in them. big_smile

Re: Kid Cannabis

The only place I've seen Brandon listed as cast is an IMDb page that lists upcoming movies. Might be that he's not actually gonna be in the movie in the end. But it would be cool if he was, I've looked at a lot of his videos today. He's pretty funny and maybe we could even nag him into filming Chris for us. smile

Aaron was one of the main characters in Disturbia. You know, next to Sheephead. I just didn't recognize his name or face. Not sure what else he's done so far.

Just curious, why do you say Iowa, Deb? In the Nate Norman article, it says he's from Idaho. Was that just a mix-up or am I missing something? I was gonna use this for the filmo summary, but obviously I don't want to put Iowa there if you actually meant Idaho...

Because I made a mistake.  It was late last night and I haven't read anything about this in a while.  It's Idaho.

Re: Kid Cannabis

And now that I'm re-reading the article, I know who Aaron is gonna play:

In the end, Nate was not undone by his own greed but by overlooking one of the basic tenets of capitalism: Never underestimate the competition. Nate's most serious rival was a kid named Brendan Butler. Born in Korea, Butler had been adopted at age two by an upper-middle-class couple in Hayden Lake, a suburb of Coeur D'Alene. His friends and family all called him by his nickname, "Wang," which means "little prince" in Korean. Butler was a short kid, only five-foot-four, but exceptionally bright, having graduated early, and with honors, from the prestigious Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane.

Cool.  Yeah, see?  These were not the kind of weed-addled dunderheads we saw in Alpha Dog.

Re: Kid Cannabis

No, this is going to be quite a powerful movie if they do it right. Wonder who's gonna play Buffy, Nate's girl. Also wonder who's gonna play Topher, Nate's best buddy.

The article is actually a really great read if you imagine Chris playing Nate. There's gonna be a whole of stuff for Chris to explore, character-wise. I can certainly understand why he's really excited about this one.

Re: Kid Cannabis

Jeeeez. If they do this right, they'll make a really good film out of this story.

Aaron Yoo is a really natural actor, in my opinion. I've seen him in a few other things aside from Disturbia and he always delivers a solid performance. And of course I have no doubt that Chris will completely own this role.

Oooh, I'm excited!

Re: Kid Cannabis

Deb, actually you have seen Aaron Yoo. He was in ER episode 14x16 Truth Will Out. He played a Korean animation student who was jumped on the L platform. Turned out he had a spine tumor. He was the kid where the Australian jerk doctor said over the phone that he had cancer and Abby gave him a short-term amnesia-inducing drug because the Korean kid was freaking out upon hearing about the cancer over the phone. Not sure if you remember that. On ER he had a strong Korean accent. He didn't have any accent in Disturbia, as far as I recall. And I also think he did a good job on both counts.

This is about the town where Nate Norman grew up.  Looks like the weed is still flowing there...

Outrage over high-school yearbook's references to drugs, sex, drinking
By Meghann M. Cuniff

The Spokesman-Review

Look closely at high-school yearbooks and you'll find inside jokes and pop culture references only the kids understand.

Look closely at the Lake City High School yearbook in Coeur d'Alene and you'll find all that — plus references to drinking, sex and illicit substances, including Ecstasy.

The psychedelic-themed yearbook hit the hallways last week, prompting a few students to demand their money back after finding sexual innuendo and subtle — and not so subtle — references to drug culture.

"I know teenagers are just renowned for pushing limits," said Hazel Bauman, Coeur d'Alene School District superintendent. "But there seems to be more single issues scattered through this yearbook than one would hope in that kind of project."

The $40 hardcover book resembles a Jimi Hendrix album cover, bearing the title "The Lake City Experience" and featuring tie-dye and funky lettering on its nearly 200 pages. The introduction page to the junior class section is titled "Junior Haze all in my brain," a reference to Hendrix's hit song "Purple Haze."

A few parents and students have complained about the cover and theme, but Bauman said it doesn't appear students intended the entire book to allude to drug use.

An apparent reference to being high on Ecstasy and the quotes from students touting marijuana obviously do. So far, four or five students have returned the book for full refunds, said Lake City Principal John Brumley.

"Unfortunately these are very unique pieces of memorabilia," Brumley said. "There's no do-over on it."

Students James Thomes and Jeremy Guzman pointed out several pictures and quotes in the book that they said have kids talking. One shows a swim team member holding a stuffed animal's leg in a sexually suggestive manner. A quote near the end of the book features the yearbook editor saying, "Puff puff pass ... Oops did I just say that in the yearbook?"

A photo of a group of friends has "rolling with the homies" written across it, with "I need a glass of water" above. Ecstasy users often say they are "rolling" when high on the drug, which causes dehydration.

Coupled with an onslaught of spelling errors, photos whose subjects are misidentified and excessive photos of staff members and their friends, the book has upset quite a few students, Guzman said.

Brumley wouldn't comment on rumors that a yearbook staffer had switched out several pages at the last minute, but he said the objectionable parts appear to be "some fairly deliberate issues on the part of at least one student."

"I think (adviser Carol MacPhee) got a little too trusting and a couple things went in that shouldn't," he said, adding that she'll keep a closer eye on the staff next year.

Thomes, a senior-to-be, will edit the yearbook next year with a couple of other students. He's already studying this year's book.

"It's gonna be an example of what not to do," he said.
