Re: Summer Movies 2009

Land Of The Lost = big screen adaptation of The Flintstones.  At least that's what the trailers remind me of.  It doesn't bother me that they turned it into a goofy comedy with Will Farrell.  I mean, really, you can't make a "serious" Sid & Marty Krofft adaptation and why would you even try?  Maybe it's the presense of Danny McBride that bugs me.  I just find that guy repulsive.

Pass.  I'd rather rent the DVDs of the original TV series and marathon them that weekend than go out and see this trash.

Re: Summer Movies 2009

Danny McBride is the new face of the booger-eating school of comedy and he looks beyond ridiculous in LOTL.  But whatever you do, avoid his cable show, Eastbound & Down.  I accidentally didn't change the channel one night and saw about half of an ep.  It's just awful.  But he's enormously popular with, you know, fans of booger-eating comedy.

Sadly, Steve Brill replaced William Katt with him in the reshot scenes for Fanboys.  He is pretty funny in the movie, but I would rather have seen William Katt.  The young dudes in the audience loved him though.

Well, if you have to go back to the theater, Star Trek is certainly the one to go for.  It looks so action-packed and huge it just demands to be seen on a big screen with killer sound.  I can't wait.  It's probably the next film I'll see in the theater and the last one for a while afterward.

4. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

I just came home from watching it. It begs to be seen on the big screen. I pretty much think it rocked. The best action movie I've seen in a long time (which might change next week after I've seen Star Trek--we will see). Of course you have to like action and the kind of movie that it is, but I think I can say fair and square that if you liked the other three X-Men movies, you're also gonna like this one.

Right now I really wanna grab my copy of X-Men 1 and rewatch it. I know there's a gap between X-Men Origins and the first movie, but I'm still really interested in seeing the first movie again after just having learned all of Logan's history. Probably kinda like a lot of people felt after seeing Star Wars Episode III.

Re: Summer Movies 2009

I did enjoy the first 2 X-Men movies tremendously.  But my main reason for wanting to see Wolverine?  Ryan Reynolds and Taylor Kitsch.  Rowwwwwrrrrrr.

Re: Summer Movies 2009

See, Deb, I didn't even know Ryan Reynolds was gonna be in it. And I kinda forgot about Liev Schreiber until the starting credits. Another positive surprise was Dominic Monaghan. No idea who Taylor Kitsch was before today. Can't say I found him very impressive. Ryan's character got really scary at the end. Took me maybe a minute to even recognize it was him.

I can say this to the girls, though: If you like muscle, you're gonna enjoy the hell out of this movie. wink

Re: Summer Movies 2009

I didn't know Dom was in the movie.  Cool!  Taylor is one of the stars of Friday Night Lights.  So I've had about 3 years and 48 hours of great televsion to get acquainted with him.  He didn't do much for me in the beginning of that show either, but he really grew on me.  Love him now, though not nearly as much as Zach Gilford.

Oh, and you know what? Chris would have been a perfect choice for the role that Dom got to play, short as it was.

Re: Summer Movies 2009

Oh, and by the way, if you watch the movie, make sure to stay until after the end credits, there's another short scene at the end.

They reviewed the movie on the radio this morning. Said the story was quite thin. I didn't really think so, but maybe the fact that I thought the movie was pretty good doesn't mean that it's a masterpiece. Better not expect too much when you go see it.

Re: Summer Movies 2009

People have been bitching about Ryan's character going against canon too.  Eh, who cares?  Never read the books so that's not something I would even notice.

The Hangover's success is pretty easy to explain...it's very funny.  A comedy which is actually funny, is always a good bet for success.

Nice! I'm probably gonna buy the 2-disc edition, but not right away. That one's gonna have to wait until it's a little cheaper. Okay, a lot cheaper, so a year after release or so.

Re: Summer Movies 2009

LOL!

I knew it!  That insanely stupid trailer does apparenly belie a terrible mess of a movie.

How bad is G.I.Joe...?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/0 … 50661.html

I think it's hilarious that they're doing the hard sell in Sarah Pailn's "Real America", while avoiding the coastal markets.  Doesn't that just reek of corporate cynicism?  They think they have to sell it to the "lowest common denominator" in the "fly-over states".  That marketing strategy alone is insulting.  And they they add injury to the insult by making people sit through 2 hours of total clap-trap.  Niiiiiice.  Stay classy, Paramount.

Re: Summer Movies 2009

Sure.  But there's fun and then there's completely brain-dead.  And movies just seem to get dumber every year.  What I don't like is stupid movies.  I'd like to see some smart action/sci-fi movies like they used to make, just for a change of pace.  That's why District 9 is so appealing.  It looks different, and people are saying that it's really smart.  If it's a hit, maybe it'll set a new standard and we'll go through a period of better, tighter, deeper movies for a few years.  But, of course, being an R-rated film, it will never earn as much as the relentless onslaught of PG-13 popcorn movies aimed at 14-year-old boys.

And for the record, I live in one of the most conservative states in the union.
