At a certain part in your life. Probably when too much of it has gone by. You will open your eyes and see yourself for who you are. Especially for everything that made you so different from all the awful normals.

Re: for Simon ....

Digestives?  You call cookies "digestives".  Wow, that sounds unappetizing.  "What kind of digestives would you like with your tea?"  LOL!  Reminds me of when my former writing partner was visiting from Australia and he asked me what kind of "grease" I used on my sandwiches.  Again, that sounds so appetizing.  I realize that these are simply literal interpretations, but yuck!  While he was here, I got him addicted to Miracle Whip.  LOL!

Re: for Simon ....

You can also get them with chocolate and caramel (my favorite!). Taste-wise, I have so far only encountered these kind of cookies in Commonwealth countries. They're sweet, but they also have an underlying salty taste. We have cookies that look kinda like them, but nothing that really tastes like British Digestives.

Not sure, they might have been. Was the wrapping yellow and blue?

I don't remember the wrapping, but the name "McVities" sounded somehow familiar.

Ok I think that might have just been your writing partner. Hahaha never heard the referrence "grease". Whats Miracle Whip???

Yup - Australia is Commonwealth and we have them here too. Though in general we would refer to the broad term "cookie" as biscuits. Most of the time if someone says cookie it is known what you are talking about but mostly just teased for trying to be American. The only time I ever say cookie would be referring to the cookie monster and the cookies at Subway. MMMMMM subway cookies....

Re: for Simon ....

Miracle Whip is basically kind of a tangy mayonnaise, but with less fat.  It's not my favorite sandwich spread.  I actually prefer a little mayo and a little spicy mustard on most sammies.

Re: for Simon ....

We have Miracle Whip in Germany too, amazingly. Only we spell it Miracel Whip and pronounce it the German way (Mi-RAH-kel Vip), which is really strange because then it doesn't mean anything. It's just a name. It took me a long time to realize that it actually consists of two English words that have a meaning. yikes

My non-British but very British friend (German friend who now lives in the UK) always teases me when I say cookie instead of biscuit (or biccie)... wink

Re: for Simon ....

If cookies are biscuits in England, what do they call actual biscuits?

Re: for Simon ....

What are American biscuits? These special buns you get that are like hamburger buns, only more crumbly and not as sweet? Not sure they even have those in the UK. We use something like that very often as a base for cakes with fruit, we call it Mürbeteig, which LEO translates as shortpastry or shortcrust. Is that what you mean?

FYI: I think what you call biscuits doesn't exist in Germany either, at least not in that form. If you wanna eat meat in between baked bread thingies, you can either get a hamburger, a hamburger or a hamburger. smile (Of course we have cheeseburgers and chicken burgers and fish burgers too, but they use the same bread as hamburgers.)

Gee, look what you've done, now I'm craving a hamburger!

Re: for Simon ....

Biscuits are generally a breakfast food.  They're made from a heavy dough of flour and lard.  They're crusty on the outside, tender and flaky in the middle.  You can get them with eggs and breakfast meat in them (like a sandwich), or you can get them my favorite way, smothered in sausage gravy...

Re: for Simon ....

Looks yummy! We definitely don't eat that kind of dough baked or served like that in Germany. I don't recall having seen it in the UK either, but of course that doesn't mean it doesn't exist over there.

Re: for Simon ....

Sounds like you are describing unsweetened scones or pancakes HAHA. We dont really have that here but we do have damper in Australia which sounds kinda similar. Its more of a camping tradition though. I dont know of anyone that would cook it in their homes.

This is wiki's explanation. Is that called biscuits in the US? Its so strange...
