Just wanted to introduce myself

I've been a fan of Chris's since his first appearance on Joan of Arcadia.  I'd seen him on one of the Touched By An Angel eps ("An Angel on My Tree") but hadn't made the connection.  I think Chris is a fantastic actor, and I've enjoyed seeing him in diverse roles.  I liked "The Girl Next Door" more than I thought I would, and "Freddy Vs. Jason" was vastly improved by Chris's presence.

I'm somewhere in my 40s, and have been involved in different fandoms for about 25 years now.  I've written a ton of fan fiction in various fandoms, under so many names I can hardly keep track of them all.  At last count I'd written seven fannish novels (the eighth is almost done, and I have a couple more that are close to finished), and about eight more that are somewhere in progress.  I've completed around 85 short stories, with a couple dozen more in progress.

None of my stories are JoA, though my current novel (in a fandom that's too complicated to explain, a cross-universe, alternate-universe project incorporating seven movies) has Adam Rove as a character, along with a few people from Grey's Anatomy, one from Nip/Tuck, and one from American Gothic.  So that's kept me busy for the last year, and is my main excuse for not keeping up with Chris's career during that time, though I hope some of the people reading that will try to check out the JoA DVDs to find out more about Adam.  I'm on Chapter 99, with just a few more to go, I hope.

I just ordered "American Gun" from Amazon, used, for $1.50 plus shipping, so altogether it'll cost me about the same to buy it as it would to rent it.  Since it's always checked out at the local video store, I'll finally get to see it!

I hope to be able to spend more time here soon, to check out what everyone's talking about related to Chris!

Re: Just wanted to introduce myself

Hey shrams, mi compadre!

I don't feel so alone now.  I am also of a certain age and have been involved in various fandoms for at least as long as you have.  I only started writing fics in about 2002 or 2003, something like that.  Back then, it was Buffy and Angel.  Only a few, but one of them won an online award just recently.  Someone somewhere dug it and nominated it, I guess.  Right now, I'm involved in writing this magnum opus JoA fic with TeeJay.  It's the most fun I've ever had writing.  Normally, I'm a screenwriter.  Re-learning prose-writing has been a very interesting challenge.

I hope you hang out and enjoy our little community.  We like to babble about Chris and JoA quite a lot and there have been some rather lively discussions of Huff and Fanboys.  You gotta meet the guys, Sean and Ken --- our buds who worked on Fanboys and got us more Chris loot than you can shake tree at.  Wait till you see it all!

Of course, right now, we're kind of on a Revenge Of The Nerds high.  TeeJay and I had so much fun on the set this past week.  And we came away with a whole new appreciation for Chris just as a dude, you know?  He's just very laid back and very damn cool.  Nicest guy ever.  And if I can go all McMom for just a minute, a very well-mannered young man.  Respectful and kind and thoughtful.

So, check out some of the threads on our boards that have been going on for a while now.  There's some info in there and a lot of silly fun.  Start your own threads.  We don't restrict that at all.  We talk all things Chris and non-Chris related in the appropriate threads.  Hope to see you around a lot more.  I think you and I might have a lot to talk about.

Re: Just wanted to introduce myself

Thanks for the welcome!  Yes, I have a feeling we might have a thing or two to discuss.  I'm usually one of the oldest, if not the oldest, person around on any discussion board.  It's not that there aren't more fans our age out there, but they don't seem to post as much.

I wasn't able to see the Huff episodes, because I didn't know which ones Chris would be in.  Fanboys looks awesome, dude. lol  Can't wait to see it.  I vaguely remember the original Revenge of the Nerds, but I know nothing about the remake other than that Chris is in it.  I'll have to read the set-visit account.

Re: Just wanted to introduce myself

Gee, now we have two people here with an age that has a 4 in the front (sorry, Deb, I had to say it). I'm 30 myself, so not quite a teen anymore either. And I guess that separates us from a lot of message boards, where you mostly find one sentence posts that don't have a lot of depth. Not that I wanna trash other boards and praise ourselves above all else, but this board (and previously Melissa's board) is honestly the one message boad I'm having the most fun with. And so far there are only respectful and decent people around, so I hope you are inclined to come back here as often as you can.

I can only second what Deb said, including the fan fiction part. I have written close to 30 JoA stories, and writing our latest epic, Butterflies, has been so much fun. Still is. I love that story.

If you haven't seen Huff with Chris, shrams, why don't you take a look at the video clips we have on the site? Chris's scenes are all there. He's kinda creepy, but not as creepy as they wanted to make him at first (as Chris told us himself). Read the interview with him if you wanna hear what that's all about. Major ewwww moment. tongue And we found it quite refreshing to see Chris as some kind of bad guy. If you wanna look for the episodes Chris is in on TV, it's 2x04 Sweet Release, 2x10 Bethless and 2x11 Tapping The Squid. He was supposed to come back in season 3, but I guess with the cancellation we're out of luck here.

Oh, and thanks for coming over here from LJ.

Re: Just wanted to introduce myself

Thanks, TJ and Samsy-Marie!

I'm having some issues with another (non-Chris) discussion board I'm on, which seems to have been invaded recently by teens who want to discuss everything but The Actor.  All they ever say about him is how hot he is, etc., but they don't have much to say about his projects.  Instead of in-depth, serious discussions, they want everything to be "funny" and light.  The problem is, not everyone has the same sense of humor.  Quite a few of the people I used to discuss things with have left the board, so I hardly ever post there anymore.  It's nice to find a place where people want to discuss things in detail, analyze characters and motivations, and all those other fun things. big_smile

As soon as I have more time, I'll watch the Huff clips and anything else I can find that I've missed, and read the articles.  I'm being pulled in so many directions lately, plus increasing my hours at work, it's hard to find time for everything just yet, but at least I've got a lot to look forward to here!

Yeah, there are a lot of boards like that out there. This is kinda sad, because I don't limit my interest in an actor to how hot he is or whom he is dating. In fact I don't care about that at all, my main interest is about his WORK and on those boards you can't have a serious discussion about that. So I am happy that we have created this place here, because on this board we can have serious discussions and we can also be funny,  that's great. smile

Re: Just wanted to introduce myself

Oh, you won't believe the things Deb and I are currently going through on IMDb. The Revenge of the Nerds board is going crazy with people who only wanna trash others. Deb and I have been personally insulted more than once now, and while I try looking at it with a laughing eye, I sometimes have to fight hard not to be discouraged by people claiming Deb and I just went to the set of ROTN to get into Chris's pants. Thank you. I feel so respected as a fan. Did I wear a push-up bra and skimpy clothes, make-up and high heels? (Not to imply that Chris would fall for that in a heartbeat...) No, I wore jeans, a t-shirt, a hoodie and sneakers. Yeah, way to impress him and make him wanna jump right into bed with me. Jesus H. Christ!

Not to mention that we went there with 27 carefully prepared questions that we tried to fit together that they would flow as a conversation and that were as much about him as they were to answer all those questions that have been on our minds. I will admit to there being a certain physical attraction. That's part of the whole fan deal, isn't it? If you didn't like looking at a guy or gal, why would you watch TV shows/movies that he or she's in? And there's nothing wrong with the occasional daydream. But that's all it is for me. Sleep with him for a one-night stand? No, thank you. Expect for him to end up in a serious relationship with me after talking to me for half an hour? That's outright delusional.

Okay, sorry for that rant. I just had to get it off my mind. And I didn't wanna post it on IMDb because that would just have sparked more flaming and trashing, and I just want for it to die down over there.

And, yes, that's what I love about this message board. We all know we like Chris for what he is, which is handsome and talented and oh so powerful at what he does. And have serious discussions about his work, and sometimes, like Anne said, just have a place to go where you can be silly without being ridiculed. Have we told you about the eyebrows? I have this inexplicable infatuation with his eyebrows. They are just so straight and long and just beautiful. And now I've seen them in person. smile

Yes, it annoys me too when you go to message boards about actors and want to talk about what fascinates you about his latest performance and all you get from the teens that hang around is "He's so hot," and "I'd totally do him." Oh yes, thank you for those wonderfully relevant and enlightening words. They really enriched my day. You know, it's probably different here because we've all passed the age of 20. Or at least most of us have and those that haven't are a little more mature than other kids their age.

How sad is it that the people on the JoA FanForum claim to be fans but not one of them has replied to my posting that we met Chris and that he's a total sweetheart. If I had read that about someone else, I would totally have quizzed the sweet life out of that person about what the experience was like. Is it just me, or are some message boards just riddled with really shallow people with no passion for what they claim to be fans of? Geez, I'm on a crusade again. I don't mean to praise this board above all else, I'm just so friggin' frustrated, is all. I should just stop going there, probably.

But, hey, let me turn my frustration and anger into something positive here, because I swore that before I went home from work, I would write up a Fanboys synopsis for the website. Let me get started on that and go back to happyland.

Again, I'm sorry for all the ranting. I'm not usually this crabby. And can I just say that I'm so glad that we have all the great guys on this message board with whom you can actually hold an honest and serious discussion about the things that matter to us and are on our minds. I feel so blessed about the fact that I've had the chance to meet two of them in person so far. And I'm glad we have you on board now, Shari. Thanks so much for stopping by, hope you stay.

Re: Just wanted to introduce myself

Yeah, the IMDb boards suck.  I can't believe how much they suck.  The JoA board over there is pretty decent, but it's an exception.  At least people on there talk about what they like about the show.  I just wish we could get the garbage cleaned off Chris's MB and the one for ROTN.  It would be so much fun to talk about the making of that movie while it's in progress instead of going there and reading post after post after post about how you can't remake a classic.  Balderdash!  First, ROTN is hardly Citizen Kane.  Second, I hate remakes too, but Hollywood loves them and they're not going away because a couple of ingrates rail against them on a movie board.  Do they really think their blather has any power at all?  If so, they are far more delusional than they accuse us of being.

And finally, let me just say that yeah, I think Chris is dead-sexy.  But so what?  Does that mean I think there's any chance in Hades that I would ever have the opportunity to act on that?  Can you say hell no?!?  I'm old and fat, he's young and beautiful.  End of subject.

Re: Just wanted to introduce myself

Yeah, I just checked the ROTN board and I was like, WTF is going on there? yikes I read this thread where someone insulted you personally, Deb and Tina, but the main post was deleted already. They should really clean off all that rubbish. I mean, I never posted on the ROTN board, but this time I hated that my English isn't good enough to post something there. But hey, even if I would be good enough to post there - it wouldn't help anything. These people are idiots and if they like to post such rubbish there, let them do it. We have no need to care about that, right?

Re: Just wanted to introduce myself

Ha!  No problem, I totally understand the ranting.  This seems like constructive ranting to me, and it gives me a good reason NOT to go to the IMDB message boards.  Sorry you're being hassled by people who seem to be looking to cause trouble.  Why don't they spend their time doing something a little more constructive?  There are times I hate the advent of the Internet.  It's radically changed the face of fandom, and not necessarily for the better.

On the Board That Shall Not Be Named, I got so disgusted after answering the same questions over and over, because the newbies couldn't be bothered to read what was already posted, I started getting a little snappy about it.  Naturally, they got insulted and decided I have no sense of humor, etc.  Well, not true, I just get tired of trying to provide useful information, and having it ignored time after time.  Not to mention all the "OMG he's so hawt I can't stand it and I hate his wife why doesn't he divorce her and marry me!" type posts.  Totally immature and annoying.  So I wrote a FAQ that I don't dare post over there.  But it's funny as hell, and it's a great stress-reliever.  Every now and then I update it for my own amusement.  It's now something like 14 pages long, giving intelligent and/or logical answers to all the "questions" I've seen way too many times.

Then there are the ones who vote for The Actor 500 times, in an online survey, and have a fit because he still didn't win.  "Maybe it's because that performance wasn't actually the best in any category.  He takes acting seriously; do you really think he'd want to "win" because his fans cheated?  Doesn't that imply a lack of faith in his ability to "win" on his own?"  And they'd reply, "No, he'd think it was funny!  He'd know we love him!  He'd totally appreciate it."  Granted I've never met the guy, but from everything I've read...I think he'd be a bit embarrassed, if not annoyed.  Sheesh.

So, I'm looking forward to some interesting discussions about Chris and his many roles, with people who want to discuss the same things!  smile  Of course I find Chris attractive, but he's about half my age, and...not available to me.  I'm quite sure I'm not his type!  I don't think there's anything wrong with having a crush on an actor, no matter what your age, but it's frustrating when people don't know seem to know where to draw the line between fantasy and reality.

TeeJay, I totally understand about the "you only want to meet him for one reason" line of thinking.  Years ago I got to meet my favorite actor (favorite at that time), a couple of times.  Did I follow the example of my friends and dress up all sexy?  No.  Did I make a fool of myself flirting with every halfway-decent-looking guy on the set?  No.  Did I try to sell any fan-made merchandise to the people on the set?  No.  Did I talk incessantly, asking all kinds of questions of everyone we saw?  No.  Did I try to get my crush's attention?  No.  Instead, I tried to stay the hell out of the way of people who were trying to do their jobs.  I mostly kept my mouth shut because we were on a closed set where these people were trying to work, to produce the show we loved so much.  Later, my "friends" criticized me for embarrassing them by behaving the way I did.  Gee, I thought I was being respectful.  (Sigh.)  There are fans, fangirls, and stalkers; I know which category I fall into, and where I want to stay.  So, I'm sorry you had to have the experience somewhat besmirched by idiots, but I'm glad Chris turned out to be cool!

Re: Just wanted to introduce myself

I hear ya shrams.  You are going to see some silly posts here from time to time, but we hope we won't ever get cluttered with the kind of mindless chattering you see most places.  And I hope you won't mind our brand of silliness.  Maybe even find it amusing yourself.  If you ever saw some of the stuff we did over at Meslissa's board, you understand.  We do drool.  But at least we have a twisted sense of humor about it.  And we drool creatively.  In the usual ways, fics and fan art.  And also through TeeJay's shirts and towels.

And we do have our very serious side too.  It's kind of fitting that our board would be both serious and silly.  That's who Chris is.

Having just spent a little bit of time with the guy, we know Chris is just a regular dude.  A very talented, very handsome and charming regular dude, sure.  But a dude.  For myself, I can say that I have new respect for him.  The genial and genuine way he conducts himself with all the people around him makes it obvious that he's simply a good guy.  I hope that all the movies he has coming out next year will raise his profile hugely and everyone will see how unique he is.  But even if he explodes, he'll still be just this really cool guy.

Do I have a crush?  Sure.  But I've had crushes for as long as I can remember.  Nothing new here at all.  Is that all it is?  Certainly not.  I'm just so moved by what Chris does onscreen.  The emotions he evokes.  We've seen so much already and yet I feel that we've just scratched the surface.  He's a complete actor, but all his colors are not yet on display. I think, just wait.  Just wait.  You'll all see.  There is nothing he can't do.  And he will do it all.

Ha, right, Deb!  Chris is an incredible actor, and I hope someday he gets the respect and recognition he deserves.

I can be silly at times, too, and I don't mind a certain amount of droolng.  I drool too!  I just want to read, and write, something more substantial than that.  I have nothing but respect for Chris, and I hope a lot of others will discover him, once more of the movies are available.

Re: Just wanted to introduce myself

Hey everyone, I'm Kerrie, i'm from Dublin, Ireland.
I first saw Chris and immediatley liked him in his heartbreaking scene in Strong Medicine episode "Trauma", where he tries to beat up the man who raped his mother, very sad stuff
Then i forgot about him for a couple of years and then along came Joan Of Arcadia, I immediatley grew attached to the character of Adam Rove, and Chris played him excellelently. At first you think he's a drug addict but he's not, he's just all dark and mysterious because his mum killed herself. When Joans mum read out the letter to Adam it was sooo sad
And even when Adam cheated on Joan, I still felt bad for Adam for some reason lol. Ya just gotta love him!

Anyway back to he point:
Then after seeing THe Girl Next Door, I thought, omg is there nothing Chris can't do haha.
I just wanted to say how impressed I am with Chris after seeing his demo reel that you put together
and a couple of his interviews. Firstly, i think it is absolutley brilliant
how he can play a really a emotional character and then play a comedy role with slapstick and funny facial expressions too (I have never laughed more at a movie then at "Just Friends") It shows real talent to be able to play two completley opposite types of roles and he is fabulous at them both. The other thing that impressed me is that he was so
down to earth and friendly in his interviews, and he's very good at answering
questions he's given. Some actors when giving interviews ramble a bit and
obviously are making it up as they go along but Chris obviously takes his
roles very seriously and does the research and can answer a question with
accurate and indepth information. WELL DONE CHRIS!

Welcome to the boards, Kerrie.

Most of us share your feelings of how impressive Chris is to watch (but some of us just think he's pretty tongue)  And there's huge Adam love around here as well.   Deb and TeeJay (two of the mods) are writing a huge Joan/Adam fic called Butterflies, one of the best out there that's still being updated.

I hope no one scares you too bad around here, but we can get sort of crazy wink
