Just wanna say that I'm thrilled to see Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee earn 17 Emmy nominations, to lead all nominees. It's a wonderful movie. Made me cry three times. I'm rooting for it to win as many as possible, but it has to win in this category...

Another amazing movie that should win is Jonestown. But I'm pretty sure Spike Lee's movie about Katrina will blow away all competition.

Just watched an episode of Life on Mars, a British cop show for the first time in English. Dude, I am so not used to British English anymore. LOL
But it was fun. And kinda creepy.

Also, if anyone's curious about a Chris role that almost was, you can check out the DVD of Factory Girl this week. The part Hayden Christensen plays (based on Bob Dylan) is the part Chris wanted in the movie, but didn't get.

I'll check out the German DVD. If that will ever come out. Somehow the movie was only showed on a thing called European Film Market in Germany. Never heard of that.

Just saw a commercial for Factory Girl. The DVD is unrated and there's this one scene in the commercial with the character Chris would've played rolling around naked with Sienna Miller. What I wouldn't give if he'd gotten that part... :drool:

The Lookout

A brilliant, character-driven heist film that languished in turnaround and through an agonizing game of director musical chairs finally lands in the proper helmer's hands: the screenwriter's. The end result is not just another masterful script from Scott Frank, but also a glaring indicator of the scribe's tremendous talent as a director.
A project that was no less than 10 years in the making, and which saw its share of A-list directors shuffle on and off the project (Sam Mendes, Michael Mann, and David Fincher were all attached at various times), The Lookout is the story of Chris Pratt (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a once-promising high school hockey player who suffers a brain injury that prevents him from remembering things for extended periods of time. When word that he's gotten a job as the nightshift cleaning man at a local bank reaches a local gang, their leader Gary (Matthew Goode) manipulates Chris into helping him rob the place. Chris' attempts to stop the burglary against not only great odds, but also his own physical debilitation, fuel one of the best crime films of recent years.
Screenwriter-director Scott Frank (best known as the credited writer on a number of high-profile projects such as Dead Again, Get Shorty, Out of Sight, and Minority Report, and the uncredited writer on many others of equally high stature) tells his story introspectively. There's a deliberation to the pace that doesn't feel slow, but instead creates a realistic atmosphere that allows the narrative to unfold naturally. The film feels like a nod to a number of strong, character-driven, crime-oriented movies from the '70s (Straight Time and Charley Varrick immediately come to mind), a time before the "whammo" method of style over substance screenwriting came into play. Imagine: a crime-drama released in 2007 that actually makes its audience care about its characters before putting them in dangerous situations.
As in the finest writing, Frank's screenplay evolves from character, all richly defined and strikingly original. From Chris' brain injury to Gary's shading as more than just a common antagonist, the script understands the magnitude of involving an audience emotionally with its players. It's refreshing when even a smaller role like Deputy Ted (Sergio Di Zio) proves to be a lot more dimensional than the clichéd, cookie-cutter character he could have (and had the writing been lazier, would have) been. There's little that's predictable in the movie, and yet the characters still all behave completely in accordance with their distinct personalities.
With his previous Elmore Leonard adaptations, Frank has shown deftness at combining comedy, character, and crime. He can now add suspense to that list. The Lookout is a film that works no less as a character-driven drama than it does an intense action-thriller. The movie's characters, pace, and plot all blend organically into a deftly orchestrated masterwork that's both gripping and inspiring.

The disc's key writing featurette is the "Sequencing The Lookout" piece, in which Frank explains the genesis of the film, starting with his inspirations for the screenplay. The writer-director was most heavily influenced by European thrillers, which tend to concentrate more on their diverse characters than they do on suspense. His further detailing of exactly how the idea started (a friend's head injury), all the way through the structuring of the script, is fascinating for students of the writing craft. The commentary by Frank and director photography Alar Kivilo is concerned solely with production insights, particularly lighting, blocking, and camera placement.
Unlike so many current films, The Lookout is all at once cerebral, emotional, and thrilling. It's a potent reminder that story and situation pale in comparison to the overall significance of dimensional characters. Here's a movie that does what movies are supposed to do; it stays with you long after you've seen it.

Will it never end?!? Hollywood makes me sick sometimes with this remake crap. How the bleedin' hell do you remake a Bruce Lee movie without Bruce Lee? The whole point of a Bruce Lee movie is BRUCE LEE. This is f'ing ridiculous!

oh yeah, I read it on a German website, and I wished it wasn't true. Well, Hollywood has run out of good ideas, so they think they have to remake everything. And ruin it.

Are you kidding me?? Okay, I was alright with "The Dragon" because that was made as a loose biography of Lee---but a remake? I don't care who you get to play Bruce Lee, this is just a horrible idea all around!!

In point of fact, I LOVE Dragon. I mean LOVE it. I saw it three times in the theatre and it made me cry so much the first time around. Mainly because of the refecences to Brandon who had only died like a month or so before it was released. It's a beautiful love story, a kicky action movie (shot like a chopsocky flick), a clever comedy of manners, a wonderful character study, and a fantastic showcase for the amazing Jason Scott Lee (no relation). I also ADORE the soundtrack. Bruce & Linda's theme music has been used to advertise a ton of other movies, used on TV sports highlight reels, just all over the place. If you heard it right now, you'd totally recognize it.

I own that DVD and soundtrack and I still watch the movie every time it comes on TV. I've probaby seen it 30 times by now, can quote huge chunks of it.

I will even go so far as to say that if Brandon was still with us and they wanted to remake ETD with him in the lead, I might be able to accept that. Also, I'm curious about the CGI Bruce Lee movie that's in the works, mainly because the very discriminating Latino Reviews website said the script is insanely good.

But this? And by the studio who made the original? It's blasphemy.

Movie Reviews: 'Superbad'

Any movie titled Superbad would appear to be inviting negative reviews from critics. But, for the most part, critics are declining the invitation. Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times, in fact, gives it a 3 1/2-star rating and writes that the movie "is a four-letter raunch-a-rama with a heart ... astonishingly foul-mouthed, but in a fluent, confident way where the point isn't the dirty words, but the flow and rhythm, and the deep, sad yearning they represent." Likewise Carina Chocano remarks in the Los Angeles Times, "Wide-eyed and sincere as it is hilariously, unrepentantly profane, the movie aims to express what it's like to stare down the barrel of your first foray into adulthood, and it's not afraid to be honest about it." Manohla Dargis in the New York Times is inspired to write a similar description in raunchier terms (befitting the movie itself, apparently, but hardly the prose one would expect to find in the pages of the Times.) "If the penis is puzzled in Portnoy's Complaint, as Alexander Portnoy's shrink believes, in Superbad it is thoroughly, stunningly clueless and as violently tremulous as a divining rod at Hoover Dam," she comments. Gene Seymour in Newsday assures wary filmgoers, however, that "no matter how outrageously prurient things get, you never once feel as though you're being jabbed in the ribs or shoved face-first into the muck of hormonal excess." Joanne Kaufman in the Wall Street Journal describes the movie as "the canny evocation of male friendship in all its richness and complexity." And Ann Hornaday concludes in the Washington Post: "Superbad proves itself to be not just smutty and stupid, but tender and all too aware of the rue that can lie behind the smiles of a summer night."
