Dude, I just saw the preview for next week's ER and I think I've solved the mystery of what role Chris was considered for that didn't happen. There's a character who looks about Chris's age and kinda has a James vibe to him who goes ragingly psychotic at one point. He's played by Shawn Hatosy, who's one of Johnny's guys in Alpha Dog. Man, it would've been very cool if Chris could've played this role, just like he said. Here's the TV Guide synopsis...
Episode Detail: Jigsaw - ER
The ER deals with a patient whose personality changes are more baffling than his physical problems; Abby has an odd---and unexpected---encounter with Curtis Ames (Forest Whitaker); and Weaver gets an interesting offer.
````````````
For the record, Forest Whitaker (Carter in American Gun) was in the show again tonight too. He had this great moment where the camera was focused on his face and tears just poured out of his eyes. His expression barely changed. It was flat-out awesome man-crying.
Baffling personality changes? That kinda reminds me of the ER episodes where David Krumholtz played that psychotic killer (which I still need to see ...). But yeah, would have been cool to see Chris on ER again.
Oh boy, why did he not get to do the role? That would have rocked! We would have seen more full-spectrum Chris. I'm bummed about that now. But maybe he'll get the chance for something equally good some time. I'm sure he will. But now I know I will be watching this episode next week, thinking about how much I would have loved Chris do it. Which will be distracting, to say the least. But, oh well....
Can't wait for last night's episode and see Forest Whitaker do greatness. He's a great guy. Just imagine Chris would have been in next week's ep and Forest as well. Would have been another entry in his list of working with people repeatedly.
He didn't do the part because he wanted to take a month off. Remember how he was telling us that he had only had a week off in between all the movies he shot this year? If he had taken the role, he would've been working in September instead of recharging before ROTN started.
Really? I've got to look for that!
I have mixed feelings about seeing actors I like in really extreme roles. It's a great stretch for their acting to go to different extremes, but it can be hard for me to watch. I know, realistically, people are capable of all kinds of things they think they'd never do, but some people are almost too convincing! There have been times when I've first seen an actor playing a really creepy or repulsive guy, and I just can't get over it, especiallyl if they often play a similar character (i.e. Jack Nicholson). If it's just an occasional role, and they've built up enough collective goodwill from previous roles, I can handle the occasional disturbing character (i.e. Keanu in The Gift or The Watcher). I think Chris falls into the latter category.
I know in my head that these people are just actors playing a role, but if they make it realistic enough that I can really see that aspect as a part of their personality that they usually suppress, it can be hard to get that out of my mind. I have a feeling this particular role of Chris's is going to be very difficult to watch.
DK's role on ER sounds like one of those I can handle, since I'm used to him playing such a nice guy. Same for Jake Weber (currently on Medium) as a child molester on NYPD Blue and a very creepy, psychotic brothel-owner in the movie Skin Art. Blech! But there's enough goodwill built up that it will still overpower those occasional roles.
I'm not sure if this makes sense to anyone else; maybe I'm just too sensitive.
Well, he appeared in three episodes a couple of years ago. That's from imdb:
"ER" .... Paul Sobriki (3 episodes, 2000-2002)
- Beyond Repair (2002) TV Episode .... Paul Sobriki (Season 8)
- All in the Family (2000) TV Episode .... Paul Sobriki (Season 6)
- Be Still My Heart (2000) TV Episode .... Paul Sobriki (Season 6)
I think in Season 6 he stabbed Dr. Carter and his girlfriend and the girlfriend dies later, but at the moment I can't remember right. A couple of months ago they were showing reruns of Season 6 here and I waited for these episodes to come but they cut them out because they were showing it at 4pm and said that was "too early" because "maybe" there are children who could watch it or something like this. So I still need to see those episodes.
And then he returns at some point in Season 8 and Carter is, well, not amused.
But do you know what's funny? The episode before "Be Still My Heart" is "Abby Road" and now guess who was in this episode? Right, it was Chris. LOL
What role, Shrams? Chris didn't take the role on ER. It'll be played by Shawn Hatosy. The ones that I think will be tough to watch Chris play will be the scummy drug dealer/stoner kid in Alpha Dog and the wired crackhead guy in The Beautiful Ordinary. But I'm still looking forward or seeing what he can do with those roles.
I understand what you're saying. I'm kinda glad, for instance, that I fell madly for Malcolm McDowell in Time After Time where he did a heroic, romantic take on H.G. Wells before I saw all his famous villain work, like A Clockwork Orange. I think I would've hated him if I'd seen Clockwork first. But after TAT, I could forgive him anything. Sigh.
Sorry, I get confused when I read too many threads at once. I was thinking of his role in Alpha Dogs. Sounds like the one on ER would have been interesting.
Thanks, Samsy-Marie, for info on the DK episodes of ER. I'll have to look for those.
Yes, I definitely remember Jake Weber from American Gothic! That was where I first saw him, and I loved that character. In fact, Dr. Matt is another character I've written into my ongoing fanfic. Among others, I have Adam, Dr. Matt, and George, Izzie and Cristina from Grey's Anatomy. Oh, and Christian Troy from Nip/Tuck.
I just watched last week's ER with Shawn Hatosy in it. Wow. Amazing acting. What I wouldn't have given to see Chris play the role! He would totally have pulled it off, anger and hostility and tear duct action and all. (Deb, I didn't cry at that last scene, but it was very moving.) I really hope we can see Chris do a similarly great guest role on a show some time. This would have showed a lot of his range. Imagine having the opportunity to play three different characters in one and the same episode! And three such different ones, to boot. (Anne, if you still wanna watch the ep some time, I'm not gonna explain what I'm talking about, unless you want me to.) I could probably even vidcap the scenes with Shawn some time if you want me to.
Other than that, wow, what is Ames up to now? Is he gonna abduct Luca's kid or something? Creepy!
Oh, I have already read a summary of that episode. It's a guy who suffers from Disociative Identity Disorder, right?
But I'd love to watch this episode sometime, so thanks for that offer.
TeeJay, you totally see what I mean about Morris, though, right? And why I would cry during that last scene, thinking abut Chris in that role?
Yes, I totally get why you would cry. I mean, the Morris scenes were great. Showed that he's human after all. I like a softer Morris every now and then. Scotty G is great. And I think if Chris had played that role, it might have even gone deeper with me too.
I kept seeing it and denying that I was seeing it, but I finally remembered to check and yes, that is Alex Kingston --- Dr. Corday of ER --- playing Keith's friend Susan's mom in Alpha Dog. She's the one who is the butt of his sex jokes and hilariously, adorably obscene gestures.
How freaking cool is that? She tries not to have an English accent and she looks a little different so I kept wondering if it was her or not. Yup.
