She Made You Cry - by TeeJay

I had a scene flash. It's been a long time, but I was defenseless. It's not great or anything. I'm a little rusty. Or at least that's what it feels like. But still, maybe you enjoy it.

She Made You Cry

by TeeJay

Author's Note:
It's been a while since I've written anything for Joan of Arcadia. For some reason I felt like going back to revisit Adam & Joan from season one, and suddenly there was this scene in my head that wanted to be written down.

This takes place shortly before Jump, I guess it's kinda AU-ish. It's after Joan destroyed Adam's sculpture and he hasn't talked to her in weeks. And maybe now it's time that he did.

Rating: PG-13

Disclaimer:
These characters and settings are not mine. Nor am I claiming they are. They are property of CBS, Barbara Hall Productions, Sony or whoever else they might belong to. I'm not making any money out of this, although that would be really cool.

He was watching her out of the corner of his eyes. He couldn't help it. He had seen her come out of the school entrance, had furtively watched her as she had walked over to the corner where she felt herself hidden from prying eyes.

From his position up in the tree, he saw as she slid down with her back against the wall. He knew she was crying, even though he couldn't really say why. And something inside his heart leapt and made him wince.

What had happened that seeing her in distress made him feel anything? Could it be...? No, it didn't feel as if he was ready to forgive her.

He was climbing down the tree before he knew it. Watching her for another moment, he didn't know what strange force inside of him made him walk towards her. Anything logical in his brain he had ever known was screaming that it was the last thing he wanted to do. Yet, he didn't stop walking.

"Jane," he said in a low voice, stopping in front of her.

She lifted her head, the veil of brown hair parting to unravel her face. He focused on the tears on her cheeks.

"Adam," she said in a whisper that, even through the tears, sounded surprised. "What are you doing here?"

"Why are you crying?" he asked simply. Did he not know the answer?

The question hung in the air for a few, long seconds. When she didn't reply, he half turned to go. "I'm gonna leave. You wanna be alone."

He had already turned around when her voice stopped him.

"I messed up."

He turned back around to face her. "Messed up how?"

"Grace is never gonna talk to me again."

"What? Why?"

It bubbled up and out of her mouth before she could stop it. How she had seen Grace's mother drunk and out of control and how she had tried to talk to Grace about it. How Grace had completely shut down and yelled at her and then just left.

He listened patiently, quietly. When she was finished, he said, "I'm gonna talk to her."

"Why would you do that?"

He looked at her for a long moment. "She made you cry."

This is beautiful. Makes me want to start with my fanfiction again too. But I haven't worked on that thing for, like, a year and now it is stuffed in one of my boxes I have yet to unpack. sad

That was really sad and really sweet.  It also shows exactly why we love Adam.  smile

Aww, TeeJay!  That's just beautiful.  I love it.  It's just exactly where they were then.  I love that, no matter how strained things were between them, his first inclination would always have been to protect her, to take care of her.  And I love that, even though he wasn't yet ready to forgive her, he called her Jane again.  I love angst, if there is an undercurrent of hope.  Thanks for sharing it.

Re: She Made You Cry - by TeeJay

Love the fic, TeeJay.   Loved it so much... I wrote a continuation of it.   Because I'm obsessed with Adam and Grace...

"What'd you do to Joan?"

Grace looked up from her locker to see Adam.  "Nothing."

"You did something.  She was crying."

"Why do you care?  I thought you hated her."  She closed her locker and leaned against it to look at him.

He opened his mouth, then closed it again and shrugged.

She nodded slowly.  She walked into an empty classroom, he slowly followed.   "She saw things... she wasn't supposed to see."

"Yeah, she told me but..."

"But what?  I wasn't gonna let her get it all over school that my mom's a drunk."  She looked out the door quickly to see if anyone was watching them.

"She wouldn't have done that.  Do you really think she would?"

"There's one person in this world that I trust."  She looked at him seriously.  "I'm not ready to let anyone else in.  I don't know how to."

Thanks, guys. Laura, I love what you wrote! Maybe it'll inspire me to write more on the topic. I wish I had my internet connection back! Only a few more days, hopefully.
