I just asked all of my friend if they would rather hve the cancer version or the non-cancer version. ALL of them said that the cancer one sounded better to them. That's about 20 people. Not all teenagers are as stupid as those guys on IMDb. I'm sure if more people knew about the movie and what has been done to it they would definitly want to do something about it.

Yeah, Spencer at IMDb is insisting that if we were serious, and "organized" we would do one. He posted the link for petitiononline.com. So let's so it. I looked at the site and it said to write the text carefully. I didn't wanna just slap something up there.

That's a good idea, Deb. I'll be 1 of the first people to sign that petition.

I don't know why I never mentioned it before. I have signed a few petitions at petitiononline.com in my day. I never organized one. We have to have a contact person to send it to, once we have enough signatures. Also, the main reason I didn't look into it is because I think there's not enough time. We'll have to promote the petition. Go to other websites and invite people to join. Post on other message boards, roam the Star Wars sites, e-mail people. If you guys have the kind of energy and time to throw yourselves into that, please go ahead, I'd love that! I just don't know how much I can help. Deb, maybe we can chat about it this weekend. I should be home both Sat and Sun night. Maybe we can also work on a text then.

Yeah, we can make a it a project to tackle over the weekend. I have no plans except seeing Definitely, Maybe at some point. Maybe Sean could help us spread the word in the SW community...?

If we really wanna do this right, we'd have to spend all weekend, registering on message boards, advertising the petition like mad. Kristen Bell sites, Star Wars sites, maybe Veronica Mars sites, you name it. This would be a big project to undertake if we want to end up with a number of electronic signatures that actually might make a difference. It's complicated by the fact that Anne only has internet access during the weekends. However, the last thing I wanna do is dissuade anyone. I just wanted to make it clear that if you organize this thing and do it right, it'll involve more than just going to a handful of Star Wars related sites and post the link.
Or maybe I'm wrong and this thing will make itself spread through word of mouth. Sure hope that's the case. Wouldn't that be cool?
Also, how long do we want the petition to stay open? If they're indeed planning a release in March or April, then where do we stand? They must be pretty close to making a final decision. They'll probably do a few more screenings (like, until they have screened only the non-cancer storyline often enough for the teenies to say they really like it) and when they're satisfied with the feedback, they'll go ahead and release this thing. We have a month at most by my estimate. How many signatures can you collect in a month?

Posting it on IMDb will go a long way, I think. I don't really expect to have it make any real difference though. Fat Bastard doesn't care what any of us think. And now that I've learned that Spencer is a friend of Raider's, I'm not so concerned that he called us out on our seriousness yesterday. I'm not gonna be bullied by three high school boys. We can do it or not. Whatever you guys think. Carol has offered to help us put together the text. I'm sure others would help us spread the word on the sites they visit. But if you think it's too much, we don't have to do it.

Okay, so if I wanted to be polite when writing to the Weinstein Co., I'd probably end up with something like this:
Dear all,
If you're not personally involved in the movie Fanboys, please accept my apology. However, I would like for you to read on as I want to share something that to a lot of fans and Weinstein Company product consumers, including me, is important. Since I do not have Mr. Weinstein's direct e-mail address, I am sending this message to every Weinstein Co. e-mail address that was publicly posted on the internet. Maybe you can even forward this to the person(s) in charge. One Shauna Robertson comes to mind, co-producer of the movie. Or even Mr. Weinstein himself.
What is this about? Quite simply: The butchering of the Fanboys storyline and my sincere dislike of it. And that is putting it mildly. Recently there have been reports of the Weinstein Co. editing the original version of the movie, eliminating the cancer plot from it completely.
I didn't want to believe it at first. It sounded like such a ridiculous notion, as the whole movie is driven by that plot. The characters' actions are driven by it, it's what makes their whole plan to break into Skywalker Ranch justifiable. What would the movie be without it? A hollow shell of a ditsy comedy, a group of five Star Wars die-hards who drive around the country just for fun, concocting a break-in ploy that will play like a whimsical stunt. Gee, that sounds original. Not.
Seriously, what is the reasoning behind this? To appeal to a broader audience? Haha, very funny, I can only laugh at that. If reports from people who have seen the no-cancer version can be believed, you will only find the movie funny if you're a Star Wars fan. If you're not, it comes across as quite ridiculous. Another Superbad, only with nerdier geeks. What does the no-cancer version offer people who aren't die-hard Star Wars fans? Hm, strange, I can't think of anything... Is that really your intention and the message you want to convey, Mr. Weinstein?
I seriously believe that cutting out the movie's heart and soul (i.e. the cancer storyline) will damage the movie in more ways than you might be aware of. Do I think releasing the no-cancer version will attract more people who pay money to see it in theaters? No. I know I wouldn't want to pay money for it if I don't get to see the real version of the movie (and that would be the one that's including the cancer storyline). I'm not keen on buying it on DVD either. And I'll be thinking twice about seeing another Weinstein/Dimension Film movie in theaters. Or for that matter buying any on DVD from now on.
And what's more important: I know I'm not alone. There are many people out there who are making their dislike of the recent edits known. There are many people who have said they would not watch it if the cancer storyline was taken out, who have expressed disinterest in buying the DVD if we end up with the no-cancer version. If you think you're going to make more money by toying with a great movie that should have released a year ago, by totally turning it inside out, think again.
We are your audience, and we're telling you we're not happy with what we're seeing. Please reconsider and release the real version of the movie, the one that Ernie Cline and Adam Goldberg wrote and Kyle Newman shot. That's the version we wanna see and we will pay money to see and eventually own on DVD.
Sincerely,
T. Bornemann
I will most definitely write at least five messages from the different e-mail addresses I have. Not all of them will be as polite (and as long) as this one, but the one above is really what I wanna say without yelling at them.

This is what TeeJay's talking about:
Dear Weinstein Company Employee,
We're sorry that it has become necessary to send this email to your entire company. If we had Darth Weinstein's personal address, we would just email him directly. But we don't. So we have used the power of google to compile a list of every @weinsteinco.com email address posted online, knowing that one of you will eventually forward this message to your boss.
Unfortunately, thousands of copies of this email will continue to flood your inboxes until our sole demand is met. We apologize for the inconvenience.
----Begin Forwarded Message----
Dear Mr. Weinstein,
I am one of the several millions of Star Wars fans around the world who have made it the most successful film franchise in history. We buy an awful lot of movie tickets and DVDs. The movie Fanboys was made by fans like me, for fans like me. It's a movie about Star Wars fans who go on a quest to do something noble for their dying friend. This is the version of the movie that many of us saw at the Star Wars Celebrations in Los Angeles and in London, and it's the version that we want to see released in theaters. It is our understanding that you have taken Fanboys away from the people who made it and that you are now planning to recut the movie so that it portrays Star Wars fans as moronic criminals who would break in to Skywalker Ranch for no reason at all. You're going to rip the heart out of Fanboys, because you think we're too shallow or stupid to want to see a movie with an actual plot. This makes all of us very angry. If you don't release the original version of Fanboys, we won't go see it. We won't buy it on DVD. And we won't stop there. Until the original version of Fanboys is released, WE WILL BOYCOTT EVERY SINGLE MOVIE RELEASED BY THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY (AND DIMENSION FILMS)!!!
If you don't want a lifetime boycott of your studio by every single Star Wars fan on the planet, we suggest that you release the original version of Fanboys - the one that portrays Star Wars fans as they really are, and not as the idiots you perceive them to be.
If you release the original version, we will give you our ticket and DVD money. And that's what you want, isn't it?
Thank you for your time. And May the Force Be With You!
Sincerely,
Every Single Star Wars Fan On the Planet
It's awesome! I love it. Doesn't apply to me, not being into SW. What if we replace it with Chris Marquette fan and modify the wording a bit? TeeJay and I decided that we are not going to write in as webmasters of C-M.com. We don't wanna bring the Wrath Of Fat Bastard down on the site. But we could certainly let them know that the movie has a built-in audience of fans of this actor, and the others as well. We could say something about Chris's part of the storyline being what's getting gutted and how that really pisses us off, just as much as the hardcore SW fans...

If you can modify the message to that effect, that would be cool. I'd totally use it with one of my various e-mail addresses.
And, yeah, better not point the Weinsteins to our site and especially the message board directly. I don't wanna have to end up removing every single picture of Chris from Fanboys that we're not officially allowed to use from the site and the board. So I guess we're also asking you guys not to mention our site in any e-mail you're writing to the Weinstein people.
