Re: Randomness

LOL!  Sometimes, I was glad to be raised an Only too, Mel.  I have 3 step-siblings and a half brother.  But I never lived with them. They all belonged to my dad and I lived with my mom.  My folks divorced when I was 3 and my mom never had any other kids.  I always say I had weekend and holiday siblings.  That was kinda cool.  I got to have them, but I didn't have them underfoot all the time.  wink

Re: Randomness

I only have bigger brothers and I can assure you, they can be annoying too!
But yeah, since they moved out a few years ago and we only meet on weekends (if at all) it's okay. I hate that they see me only as their little sister. I'm grown up now.

I also have a younger sister. I'm the oldest. So most the time I have to babysit them.

Re: Randomness

I went the a MediaMarkt store today and bought the following things:

1 Laptop protection backpack, which I need next Friday when I am traveling to Cologne.
1 electic kettle (finally!!!).
1 small hair dryer to be able to dry my hair in the morning. I bought a small one to be able to take it with me when I am "on tour".

I am happy now! lol LOL

I have to give a speech tomorrow morning, the first of many.  I'm really freaking out right now.  I have never freaked out this badly.  I don't like it.

I know how you feel. I had speech class my sophomore year. I was freaked out the 1st day and I didn't even have to speak in front of the class. I knew most of the people and by the end of the class it wasn't so bad. I hated it though! How many people do you have to give a speech in front of?

Re: Randomness

Good luck, Laura! Is it for a speech/communication class? I hate how we still have to do presentations in college ;/ C'mon now. But yeah, how big is the group? This is the first semester where I have to do a group project/presentation for three classes (out of four). One class will be in front of 85 folks- minus 10, so 75 people really. I've only met 2 people, plus myself. Tell me, how is working with 9-10 people effective?

Anyway, what is/was the speech on?

Joan: "Wow. I always thought you'd hate me if I was a cheerleader."
Adam: "No way. Why?
Joan: "Because we're subdefectives and it'd be like deserting the army or something."
Adam: "Oh, no. I don't care if you're a cheerleader, subdefective, or whatever. I just like hanging out with you because.. you're Jane."

Re: Randomness

Go get 'em, Laura. You can do it. Here's the good thing about giving speeches/presentations: The more often you do it, the less nervous you get when you do them. I hated doing them in school and and university. Now I have to hold presentations quite often at work and it doesn't freak me out so much anymore. Just make yourself aware that usually no one in the audience is out to get you or bite your neck off. They just wanna hear what you have to say (or so I hope).

I wish I had been to a good presentation seminar long before I had one last year. It was great, I took a lot of it home and use what I learned there quite often. It really doesn't take that much to improve your presentation skills if you only know how.

Re: Randomness

It is a communications class, yeah.  It's a fairly small class for college, only about 40 people.  The speech is a demonstration on using a digital camera.

Just make yourself aware that usually no one in the audience is out to get you or bite your neck off.

Except, you know, the one that's grading me.

Re: Randomness

So, I stuttered my way through my speech.  I was only allowed three notecards and I made nine, so I had to leave almost all of my speech on my desk.  That wasn't fun.  But it's done.  I didn't do as badly as I expected, but I did worse than I hoped... if that makes any sense.

Re: Randomness

That's part of your informative speech, right? I did mines on the Power Rangers, haha. Do you have to do a persuasive speech next, or another informative speech? I say talk about what's happening with "Fanboys" or yeah, anything that interests you, obviously. That way, you won't have to remember too much facts or get nervous talking about it.

Or, you can do it the Dwight Schrute way and imagine everyone's your subordinates smile

Anyway, I'm sure, like Mel said, you did better than you thought. Hopefully your professor isn't too nit-picky; public speaking is the number one fear/dread/hatred amongst everyone.

This one was a demonstration, which I guess is the same as informative.  Eventually, we have to do a persuasive speech, I don't know if it's next.  I don't know what's coming up next, but this was the only one we were allowed props.  The props seriously saved me this time.

Re: Randomness

I had to give a speech in front of over 300 people at my old school. It had to be completely memorized too. To make it worse I didn't know most of them and I was nervous. I ended up barely getting a passing grade. I hated it but I'm soo relieved its over with for good. And it was a requirement for that class and everyone had to take speech. I'm glad everyone else had it to do it to. At least I wasn't the only one.

Re: Randomness

Yeah, I remember we had two informative/demonstration speeches as well- one with visual aides and one without. Good luck with others coming up! You should have taken a group communication class instead if you don't like going alone; that is, if your major permits you to. I'm a Liberal Studies major and I had to take the single communication class.

Wow, Melody, over 300 people? AND MEMORIZED? Geez. What was it on? I actually memorized my Power Rangers speech since it is fairly easy to talk about something you like, know and are passionate about anyway, BUT I still had a little brain fart-- ahem, SO I PAUSED! It felt like an eternity but my professor said it wasn't bad as I thought, so yeah.. shows you that we are our worst critic and things end up not being so bad in the end.

Re: Randomness

It could be on a poem or a short story as long as it was at least 5 minutes and no longer than 10 minutes. I did mine on the poem "I Should Have Known" by Anonymous. I almost forgot to mention I was the 1st person to give it out of my class of almost 30 people.

Re: Randomness

In my speech class in high school, when we had to read poems, they let us do songs.  That made it easy for me.  But the coolest thing about it was one guy did Bohemian Rhapsody.  And he acted out all the parts.  It was hysterical!

Re: Randomness

I found out a few months ago that at my new school speech isn't required. I'm glad I took it though. Now I have no problem at all with speaking in front of people. As long as I'm not giving a persuasive speech or political argument in front of a lot of people, it's all good.

Re: Randomness

Oh, you meant 30 people, Melody. I thought 300! I think reciting poems/songs can be fun as long as you don't have to overly act it out; I'll stick to monotone, please. Speaking of reciting poems, I'll have to recite some children poetry in my lit class with my group of 9-10 people- in front of 75 folks (hopefully most of them will continue ditching class). FUN! Too many presentations this semester

Re: Randomness

Lol no 30 people as in only 30 other people in just my speech class. In addition to my speech class there were almost 300 other students and teachers.
