Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

haha so apparently I am the perv of this board! Oh well I can live with that.:drool::drool: Now that's what a honeymoon is supposed to be like. Not sick as a dog or passing out of exhaustion in the middle of a fancy bar in Greece...with your cousin in tow. Hard to get it on when your sharing a hostel with three other people. sad

Aw, man!  That's terrible, Donna.:(  I've had my share of travel nightmares, but your's takes the cake.  And on your honeymoon?  Poor baby!

I've been to Mexico a bunch of times, and there are a bunch of towns where you DON'T drink the water (not even to brush your teeth, not even ice in your drink. yikes).  But CSL isn't one of them.  Every business, restaurant, and hotel has great water purification systems.  I guess that's because Aunt Louisa is, at heart, a very practical woman. tongue

Ah it's okay, I am a firm believer of the idea that the more that goes wrong on you wedding day, and by extension your honeymoon the better your married life together will be. So far so good!

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

Darn, I don't think I'm able to read it until the weekend. I have too much stress at the moment. The apartment looks like a mess and I really need to clean it. We had a storm here this morning, so I was soaking wet when I arrived at work. My boss had to drive me back home, so I was able to change clothes. That was crazy! yikes

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

One of my assignments in my Creative Writing class is to read and find the hidden meaning behind this poem... the only hidden meaning I could come up with is that this is actually someone stealing the Butterflies Joan and Adam and changing their last name hmm

The Rural Carrier Discovers That Love Is Everywhere
by T.R. Hummer
A registered letter for the Jensens. I walk down their drive
Through the gate of their thick-hedged yard, and by God there they are,
On a blanket on the grass, asleep, buck-naked, honeymooners
Not married a month. I smile, turn to leave,

But can't help looking back. Lord, they're a pretty sight,
Both of them, tangled up in each other, easy in their skin--
It's their own front yard, after all, perfectly closed in
By privet hedge and country. Maybe they were here all night.

I want to believe they'd do that, not thinking of me
Or anyone but themselves, alone in the world
Of the yard with its clipped grass and fresh-picked fruit trees.
Whatever this letter says can wait. To hell with the mail.
I slip through the gate, silent as I came, and leave them
Alone. There's no one they need to hear from.

Forget about the last name of the couple.  What about the last name of the poetyikes?

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

LOL. big_smile

Hidden meaning, eh? Guess you can transfer this to pretty much all kinds of situations. You could generalize it and say it's meant to say that even though you can close yourself off, some secrets won't stay hidden forever. Or that taking a risk always means someone might come and expose you. Or that there's always consequences for someone other than yourself when you do something in public, even though you might think your actions are totally innocent and hidden.

Also, you can take the content of the poem and see what it does: Someone is delivering something to you, but they turn back and don't deliver their "goods" until later because your exposing yourself made the messenger turn away. This might actually be the opposite of what the couple was trying to do. They wanted to invite people and show them that they're very open, free spirits who aren't afraid to expose themselves fully. Maybe they didn't consider that this might make some people turn away instead of invite them.

I'm quite the analyst, aren't I? I always hated text analysis in school. Might be that I still suck at it.

Say, Laura, whatever happened to that badly written story that you couldn't bring yourself to read?

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

The hidden meaning was all biblical, actually.   The couple was Adam and Eve, the mail carrier was either the devil, God or an angel.

The badly written story for my Creative Writing class?  I blew it off.  Might be why I'm now on the brink of failing the course

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

Has anyone noticed that the ellipses (--...---...--) between sections of the story have disappeared?  I looked at a few chapters and it seems like they're all gone.  Is FFN doing something weird?

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

That's just nuts.  Maybe they'll come back.  Let us know if the condition persists.

Yeah, it needs 'em.  Makes the transitions seem a little bit choppy when, as written, they weren't.

Re: Joan of Arcadia - Butterflies

Yeah, this definitely sucks.  I'll ask TeeJay to report it to support.  Since it's in her name, she should be the one I guess.
