Got deleted on IMDb for speaking truth to power again. Those people at TWC must really hate me. Muwaaahaaahaaaa! Of course, like always, I reposted and told them it's a word doc now so if they delete it again, I'll just repost. They crack me up with their sheer terror that people will learn about their disgusting backroom dealings.

Just in case anyone was wondering, you can add this Stephen Brill-directed crapfest to your list of must-avoids...
Movie Reviews: 'Drillbit Taylor'
New York Times critic A.O. Scott says that he counts himself among the admirers of Judd Apatow's comedies but considers Drillbit Taylor the way he would a fashion company's discount line. Taking note of a tag line on ads for the movies that says "You get what you pay for," Scott remarks, "I saw it free, and I still feel cheated." Most other major critics express similar disappointment. "Four years into the Judd Apatow comedy revolution, the troops are beginning to show signs of battle fatigue," writes Peter Howell in the Toronto Star. Kyle Smith in the New York Post begins his review with this opening shot: "The last time I saw this much talent in a losing cause was Super Bowl XLII." And Kevin Crust in the Los Angeles Times describes it as "an unremarkable patchwork comedy." Owen Wilson, who reportedly is being treated for depression following a suicide attempt, is not likely to be lifted out of it by Drillbit's reviews. Several reviews suggest, however, that Wilson's talents are wasted in the film. "Wilson has occasional funny moments here, but he's hampered by a disjointed story and bland, slapstick gags," writes Claudia Puig in USA Today. And Mick LaSalle in the San Francisco Chronicle comments: "There's a raging gulf between Owen Wilson's talent and the quality of his movies. His comic timing, his distinct look, his versatility, his combination of darkness and light, his verbal dexterity, his ease in his body and his engaging personality all argue in favor of an actor who should be banking one terrific movie after another. And if not terrific, good. And if not good, respectable. And if not respectable, at least not embarrassing." Drillbit Taylor, LaSalle suggests, represents the latter.

Is anyone else worried that maybe Lucas said they couldn't use the Lucasfilm material in the no-plot version so they've reopened the film in order to remove all the sound effects, visuals, etc that they had originally gotten permission to use?... now we are!
I can't see this happen, though it is a valid point/thought.
There's way too many references, visual/verbal/effects, etc. They would have to change the van, ALL the costumes, all of Skywalker Ranch, tons of dialogue--You'd have a 20 minute movie.

No, I think they meant the FX & music George just gave them last year to add to the movie. I'm floating the rumor anyway, just to see if anything comes of it. It got me deleted from IMDb yesteday. Touched a nerve somewhere so it just might be true.

I guess this is a small triumph for us:
Weinstein said it will release the two versions on DVD, and a studio source later said that is exploring two theatrical versions.
More here: http://www.reuters.com/article/filmNews … 4820080325
and
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=43348
Not sure what it means, but how are they gonna release two different theatrical versions? That's something totally unprecedented, right? Also, I doubt we here in Europe will get that priviledge. It's gonna have to be the DVD again for us. But I guess I should be used to that by now.

I wouldn't put it past them to put one in directly after the other in the theater. With their version first. The credits roll, people walk out disgusted and don't wait for our version
But he wouldn't know that because they'd both have the same box office. Win for us Except we'd have to sit through it.
That way won't happen though. We know Harvey would want to compare them side by side so he can say how he was right "our version only made 3 million dollars less... those Star Trek people make up like 5 million dollars in box office. So technically, our version did better by two million dollars. Those Star Trek... Wars... people don't count."

I wouldn't put it past them to release a cancer version of the movie, not the cancer version. Meaning they'll put something in theaters or on the DVD that's still not Kyle's and Ernie's vision, just so they can say "told you so--the no-cancer version is way better". I don't trust the Weinsteins at all, even if now it sounds like we halfway got what we wanted.

Here's more from the SDW guys: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea … =370267612
And more about the Weinstein press release: http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/03/24/the … s-fanboys/
Glad they're still keeping the boycott up. Because it really sounds like the Weinsteins are just trying to cheaply appease us by saying they're gonna release both versions on DVD. Well, guess what, that's not really what we want. And that's not exactly news. And never a word about Lucas's involvement. I mean, come on, there must be more going on behind the scenes!

OK, first of all, great Reuters article! Three pages long and with quotes from Kevin & Matt. I've been wondering what those guys thought of all this.
Secondly, it would NOT be a precedent to release both versions theatrically. Anyone remember Clue? They released three different versions with three different endings --- A, B & C. I saw all of them in the theater. Version C was my favorite, saw that one three times. I was pissed that on video, they jammed all three endings together. If you go back in some of my posts on IMDb, I've been suggesting this all along! I never dreamed they'd even consider it.
I wrote this whole long post about how they should just take the number of theatres they planned to release it in and split them right down the middle, making sure that both versions played in all the cities where the film was released so that they'd both have a fair chance. Let the PEOPLE decide which version they want to see. But they'd better be equally polished versions with all the same special material from Lucasfilm. If this is what they end up doing... wow.
No one will ever give me credit, but I feel like I started the whole protest in a way because the SDW guys said they were inspired by the Linus Must Die! banner that I asked TeeJay to make for me. And I feel like I was the one who planted the idea of releasing both versions theatrically. Just wish I had the mojo to make it happen!

From Quint on AINC:
FANBOYS gets two versions... but what about a theatrical release?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I have to imagine it's a point of pride with the Weinsteins now... I can't believe they'd really struggle so hard for so long with this movie. I had occasion to talk to one of the producers of this movie a little while back. Apparently, the producers are unified behind the regular, cancer version of the movie, Kevin Spacey included. Apparently, the test screening scores for the two versions are only 2 points apart, so it's not a strong point there...The movie could not work. That's possible. They might not know what to do with it... but I think if they're that unsure, why go against the producers, director, screenwriter and fans and keep this debate going?
In what would look like a white flag move, The Weinsteins announced (after a fan boycott of SUPERHERO movie this weekend) that both versions will be out on DVD. There's a rumor out there that they're also exploring two possible theatrical cuts (although they still haven't figured out when they're going to release it). Why? Won't that be confusing? Unless they do some sort of R-Rated and PG-13 rated release.. which I like the premise of, but if the real difference really is just a sub-plot about a character that has cancer, then it'll be a cop-out if that's how they advertise it.
Listen guys. It's not hard. This isn't something you developed in-house. You found it, picked it up. Trust in that initial gut reaction. Market the hell out of Kristen Bell and Seth Rogen. Placate the fans and release the version they're dedicated to seeing. If you want your other cut out there, package it with the cut everyone wants to see. Hell, if it's a success, you can even double-dip. You like doing that, right?
You keep dicking with it the fans will just lose interest or get pissed off. You're cutting your nose off to spite your face here, I think.
Seriously, it isn't that hard. This couldn't have cost that much to make. Pick a release date, put some dough pushing the big comedic names you already have, slap their faces on all the posters and billboards and cut a funny trailer. Easy money. Why's this so difficult?

Finally, Moriarty speaks (and some of us wish he'd kept his damn mouth shut):
Okay. FANBOYS. I assume if you're interested at all in the film, you read Quint's piece this morning.
And I'm sure you've read many pieces about the film over the years here on the site. FANBOYS has been highly-anticipated by Harry and many, many others, and I sincerely hope that they enjoy it when they finally see the finished film. During this entire process... for as long as the film's been discussed here on the site... I never read any drafts of it or saw any rough cuts of it. I was aware of it, but when I finally sat down this year and saw three different cuts of the film in three successive days, I got a pretty good idea of what I think the reasons are behind all of the "tampering" from the studio.
FANBOYS isn't very good.
I wish it was. And I think in theory, FANBOYS might be decent. It's just that in execution, it misses the mark, and for me, it starts with the very first scene. From the moment that Eric (Sam Huntington), Linus (Chris Marquette), Hutch (Dan Fogler), and Windows (Jay Baruchel) are put together, I don't buy them as friends.
Remember what I said about DRILLBIT? I'll forgive that film some of its weaknesses because of the chemistry of its cast. Here, it's the opposite. This innocuous little comedy ends up becoming fairly painful because of the lack of chemistry between the leads. Huntington and Marquette are the defining relationship of the film. Their broken friendship and the gradual rebuilding of it forms the main dramatic arc of the film, and it never seems to me at any point like Huntington and Marquette are even interested in being in the same room with one another. It's not even just bad chemistry; it's almost like they're magnets with opposite charges, repelling each other.
And regarding the much-debated "cancer or no cancer" debate... it ultimately doesn't matter, and that's a pretty damning statement about the movie. Again... we're talking about execution and not intent here. In theory, a film about a group of friends trying to give a dying buddy his last wish could be very sweet and moving and funny and all sorts of other things. Could be. But the cancer here is mentioned a few times, but it barely seems to affect Linus. Marquette may be the main problem for me overall, since it's his lack of chemistry with Huntington and his seemingly consequence-free cancer that bother me. The fact that it was so simple to delete it from the film and still have the film play pretty much exactly the same should say everything that needs to be said about it. Fans keep trumpeting the fact that "there are only two points between the scores on the two versions when they test them," but what does that tell you? With or without cancer, it's the same film. I actually think it plays more coherently the other way. In that version, Worthington gave up being a comic book artist to become a car salesman, and he ended up screwing Marquette over in the process since he was supposed to write the comics that Worthington would draw. The road trip isn't about someone dying... it's about someone's love of fandom dying, and his friends reminding him of why that fandom is important. When people who haven't seen both cuts complain that the new version "disrespects fans," it seems to me that they're wrong. I think the non-cancer version makes more sense out of Marquette being pissed off at Worthington, and it also makes it all just comedy instead of whipsawing between broad comedy and maudlin sentiment. I didn't love any version of the film I saw, but if I had to pick, I would actually vote against the cancer.
Thankfully, you won't have to pick. Both versions will be available on video. And if they don't go theatrical at all, it's not the end of the world. At least people will be able to finally see the thing. There are good things in the film, no doubt. Kristen Bell makes the most of an undercooked role, but the reshoots actually helped put her in more of it, which turns out to be a good idea. She doesn't save the film, but she certainly doesn't hurt it. Seth Rogen evidently plays 375 different roles in the film, including "Star Trek Dork," "Klingon," "Crazy Scary Guy," and "Billy Dee Williams." If you're the sort of STAR WARS fan where all it takes is a cameo by a familiar face to make you happy, then you will no doubt love this film. Ray Park, Carrie Fisher, and "Billy Dee Williams" all appear, but I honestly didn't think any of the appearances were particularly funny or worthwhile. It's more like a checklist. "Okay... yeah, that was someone from a STAR WARS film. Got it." Like most of the STAR WARS references throughout the film, the jokes all feel a little threadbare. I think this film is simply too late to work, in addition to all of it's bigger execution issues. Kyle Newman's the credited director on the film, and Steven (DRILLBIT TAYLOR) Brill handled the majority of the reshoots and the reshaping of the film, and the result is exactly what you think it is... a sort of a Frankenstein thing made up of some good pieces and some bad pieces.
I was at a press event with Frosty from Collider.com, and he and I have known each other for about 10 years now. One of the most important things we bonded over was STAR WARS. When the subject of this film came up, it was obvious that Frosty is far more fond of it than I am, and I explained to him all the things that I think are wrong with it.
"Yeah, but I just love STAR WARS," he said. "You have to understand... I was a huuuuuuuge fan back in the day."
I have a feeling that's going to be the thing that most people who enjoy this film will say. It will remind them of something personal, and that personal memory will be what they attribute their love of the film to. And that's fine. If it works for you on that level, then fine. But I was a huge STAR WARS fan my whole life, and that didn't make this film any better in my opinion.
You'll see for yourself once The Weinstein Company sets a release date for both versions on DVD.
I'll be back a little later today with my ONE THING I LOVE for Tuesday. Until then...
So, I'm thinking of sending him an email since I can't seem to sign up for Talkback no mater how hard Itry. Something along the lines of...
Yeah, thanks.
We get it. You didn't like Fanboys. Thanks for the Marquette-bashing. How very nice of you to place all the blame for the film's failures squarely on his shoulders. You're really not helping here. Can you just let it go now and let the people who actually care about the movie get on with the business of trying to get it released so that we can see it and form our own opinions? And I know that you don't care, cuz you're so cool and all and your opinion is so incredibly important to the readers of AICN, but your name just became mud in some circles.

You know what I just realized? I don't even really care about the movie anymore. I had high hopes for it once, was even willing to fly to the US for the premiere. Darth Bastard has totally ruined it for me with all this toying and tinkering and delaying and delaying again. I'm not a Star Wars fan, so I'm sure as hell not watching it for the love of Star Wars. I probably won't get even half of the Star Wars references and jokes. Moriarty is probably full of crap, but now I wonder if maybe there's some truth in what he's saying.
Oh, it'll definitely be a drool fest for me as a Dorquette, that I already know. But I was hoping it'd be more than that. It might not be. And that would kinda suck.

I'm not taking Moriarty's word for it! Anyone who does deserves to have their Dorquette title stripped away. If we listened to know-it-all "critics", we would think American Gun sucks, which it clearly does not. We would think Alpha Dog is crap, which couldn't be further from the truth.
And we ALL KNOW that Chris does NOT suck in Fanboys either. He's never sucked in anything, why should FANS of his believe it could be possible now?
It's important to remember that these AICN people go into movies WANTING to hate them so they can sound oh-so-superior when they bash them later. Moriarty can shove it up his ass sideways. I'm not letting that windbag sway my opinion one bit.

Why release 2 separate versions on dvd?
They can include both versions of the film on dvd via seamless branching, and have a second disc full of extras.
