Gas is now $4.08 a gallon here.

I can only imagine what downtown Chicago is paying.

1.48 EUR per liter over here. That's the most expensive I've ever seen. Soon we're gonna hit the 1.50 mark. sad

Re: Randomness

Seeing you say 1.50 makes me laugh, TeeJay, because I know it means like 2 something USD but it feels like I'm reading $1.50... but $2.30+ still makes me kinda happy, as far as gas prices go.

Last time I got gas it was at about $3.69.

Re: Randomness

Yeah, but that's per liter, Laura, not per gallon.  Think half of a 2-liter bottle of Coke.  That much.  Nowhere near a gallon, so it's still WAY more expensive in Europe.  I hear they pay the equivalent of nearly $10 a gallon in the UK.  But then, it is an island nation, very expensive to import.

Re: Randomness

One gallon is 3.78 liters. Which means we pay 5.59 EUR per gallon. Which translates to $8.63. So stop complaining! wink

But also, Europeans tend not to live so incredibly far from their jobs and they drive smaller, more energy efficient cars.  They also walk and use mass transit a lot more than we do.

Got an update on my roommate and it's not good. He had a massive stroke and is paralyzed on one side and is in ICU. He just opened his eyes yesterday. His outcome doesn't look too good and will likely become a ward of the state.

Re: Randomness

Illinois, Don't give up hope. I had a 15 year old friend in highschool who suffered a stroke due to a fight which severed the blood vessel to his brain. He too was paralyzed on one side of his body. It was a very long and arduous recovery (2+years). He had to relearn everything, how to walk, talk, everything. He does still walk with a limp, and has not regained use of his arm, and has some speech difficulties. But he's here and so is your friend, don't anyone put limits on his recovery. Not even him. The human body is a mystery. Have faith and it's your job as his friend to help him have faith. This is going to be a very difficult time for him and you and all his friends and family. Especially right now, when he does wake up he probably won't remember you for a while, or be able to talk. He will be scared, but he's alive and that all that matters. Here is a suggestion when he's ready of course...An easy way to communicate with him in these early stages is by asking him yes and no questions, and having him respond with a thumbs up, or down. It may very well be that his mind and thoughts are perfectly fine on the inside, and it's just the getting the words out that is impaired. Be patient. Its WAY too early to tell what his chances are. My prayers and thoughts are with your friend and with you. Please email me if you want to talk more.

Re: Randomness

Yeah, Donna I actually wanted to say something like that but I didn't wanna sound weird because every situation is different.  And honestly I have no idea what to say in situations like this.  My friend's son had a stroke when he was 6 months old and her husband had a stroke about a year later.  Her husband's back up and walking around, he's even back in the army reserves, sadly her son is two years now and at the developmental stage of a 11 month old.

It's not the end, Illinois.  Just keep faith that he can get better.  Any movement he makes, even just with his eyes is a good step foward.

Re: Randomness

I have a story to tell too, even though it's not really "mine". The father of my closest colleague at work is currently in the hospital, it's quite a long and sad story. It started with harmless-seeming pain in his neck which was misdiagnosed. He ended up having to be put in an artificial coma because what he actually had was an abscess on his spine. He was this close to dying more than once. He made it, but no one's really sure if he's ever going to completely recover. He is possibly blind in one eye now, even though no one really knows why. And just a few days ago, he also had what looks like a stroke on top of everything. I've been there to follow the whole story through my colleague's reports and phone calls I couldn't help but overhear (we share one office room). I sincerely hope he's going to make it back to being able to lead a fairly normal life, and I hope the same for your roommate.

And I agree with Laura, every little step is one in the right direction.

Re: Randomness

I highly doubt I'll see him again.

The guy I am renting from is the one who went to see him in the hospital and was much closer to him than I was friendship wise. He talked it over with my roommates friends & family and agreed that no one can take care of him full time, so he is packing up his stuff and is going to store it away at a friends house. After that he's going to start looking for another roommate to replace him.

It seems harsh I know, but I can understand their position. They have their lives to live and can't take care of him for the rest of his life. I have no idea how good his health insurance is, but I'm sure this is going to get expensive very fast. So I don't think they can do it financially either.

I really hope that he recovers and all, he is a nice guy and didn't need for this to happen.

Re: Randomness

This is good news for MySpacers...

Notorious spammer must pay $234 million to MySpace

Sanford Wallace, a.k.a "Spamford Wallace", has been busted again. This time to the record tune of $234 million (£120 million) for bombarding MySpace users with more than 735,000 messages, the Associated Press reports. The judgment is being called a landmark victory for anti-spam crusaders, and it breathes a little respectability into the much maligned piece of American anti-spam legislation, the Can Spam Act of 2003.

MySpace's chief security officer, Hemanshu Nigam, told AP that Wallace and his business associate Walter Rines created scores of MySpace accounts and hijacked existing users' accounts by stealing their passwords. Once inside, the duo, in some cases masquerading as trusted friends, messaged other users urging them to check out cool new videos or websites, some of which linked to pornographic sites.

On Tuesday, a federal judge in Los Angeles ordered Wallace and Rines, who never attended the hearing, to pay $300 per message, the maximum penalty allowed under the Can Spam Act guidelines.

This isn't the first time Wallace has been busted. The US Federal Trade Commission ordered him to pay $4 million in damages for hawking bogus anti-spyware software in 2006, and in the 1990s his former company, Cyber Promotions, was sued by Time Warner's AOL.

While some see it as a day of justice for spam fighters, nobody expects that Wallace will actually pay up. AP had no luck tracking down Wallace at his last known address in Las Vegas, where he went into business of promoting night clubs. He's probably working on a new get-rich-quick scheme to pay off his legal tab.
