Has Rosenberg lost his mind? What the hell did he think this would accomplish...?
Sag, AFTRA Debate The Debate
Screen Actors Guild President Alan Rosenberg has publicly challenged Roberta Reardon, his opposite number in AFTRA, to a debate before the membership of both unions over AFTRA's recently concluded deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers -- and Reardon has turned him down. Reardon called Rosenberg's proposal "somewhat disingenuous" since, she said, it would merely "contribute to the destructive and divisive efforts of the last year instigated by the guild's Hollywood leadership." Reardon maintained that AFTRA negotiators had won numerous benefits for its members and denounced SAG's efforts to interfere in AFTRA's affairs and undermine its contract. Moreover, Reardon observed that she herself is also a dues-paying SAG member and as such, she said, "I urge SAG to focus solely on its own negotiations."

Today's bad news...
SAG To Get "Last, Best, And Final Offer"
The major film studios and TV networks are planning to make the Screen Actors Guild "a last, best and final offer" as early as next week, Daily Variety reported today (Friday), citing no sources. If the guild refuses to accept it or does not back off from demands for higher DVD and Internet residuals than those agreed to by the DGA, WGA and AFTRA, production will halt at the end of June, the expiration of the current agreement, the trade publication said. Such a situation would inevitably result in delaying the start of the fall TV season, industry observers noted, a situation that has not occurred since the writers' strike of 1988.

Hey, is this gonna be last year all over again? First we don't get our full TV seasons because of the writer's strike and now we won't get them because of the actor's strike. Yippee.

Strike Looms As SAG/AMPTP Talks Stall
The Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers are expected to return to the bargaining table again today, but many observers are suggesting that the two sides are barely going through the motions of bargaining. On Friday, SAG leaders claimed once again in an update to members that the AMPTP had refused to match the union's concessions. The AMPTP, in turn, accused SAG of stalling so it could devote all of its energy to persuading AFTRA members to vote down a separate deal with the AMPTP negotiated by their leaders. The AFTRA vote is due to be announced on July 8, more than a week after the current SAG and AFTRA contracts expire on June 30. On Friday AFTRA National Executive Director Kim Roberts Hedgpeth called SAG's efforts "a disgrace" and took issue with SAG's notice to AFTRA members that rejection of the contract would not mean a strike. "The notion that one can reject a hard-fought contract, which exceeds industry 'pattern, ' without backing it up with the courage of your convictions, is absurd," Hedgpeth said. Meanwhile, Tom Hanks, who SAG recently identified as an opponent of the AFTRA contract, added his name to a letter by other prominent AFTRA members who also are members of SAG calling for ratification of the agreement. The letter called it "a very good deal."

Clooney Plays Peacemaker
After one group of actors released a statement this week siding with the Screen Actors Guild and another group released a statement siding with the American Federation of Labor in their ongoing internecine battle over bargaining strategy with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, George Clooney has stepped in between them. "What we can't do is pit artist against artist," he wrote in an open letter, "because the one thing you can be sure of is that stories about Jack Nicholson vs. Tom Hanks only strengthens the negotiating power of the AMPTP." Clooney suggested that "maybe we could find a way to get what both unions are looking for." He did not indicate how that could be achieved. AFTRA leaders have said that they are satisfied with the results of their negotiations. SAG is calling for members who belong to both unions to vote against ratification of AFTRA's agreement. The existing contract covering members of both unions is due to expire at the end of the day on Monday.

Go AFTRA, Go!
SAG Leader Calls Strike Talk "A Distraction"
Screen Actors Guild President Alan Rosenberg on Sunday called talk about the possibility of a strike "a distraction" even as the SAG contract with the studios and television networks approached its expiration at midnight tonight (Monday). "We have taken no steps to initiate a strike authorization vote by the members of Screen Actors Guild," Rosenberg said in a statement. However, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers indicated that much of the industry had already shut down while negotiations with SAG dragged on. "The AMPTP has made four major guild agreements so far this year, and there is no reason we can't make a fifth and final one with SAG and get the town back to working at full speed," the AMPTP statement said. But it is generally believed that no agreement is possible before July 8, when the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists is due to announce the outcome of a ratification vote on its deal with the AMPTP. Hollywood SAG leaders have been campaigning among members who also hold union cards in AFTRA to vote down the deal. On the other hand, should AFTRA members overwhelmingly approve it, SAG's leverage at the bargaining table would likely be weakened.
So, it looks like we won't have a solid answer as to which way this thing will go until next Tuesday. Grrrr.

Let's all hope that AFTRA approves the contract. If they do, the chances of a strike are virtually gone.

If the AFTRA contract is approved, it will cut his legs out from under him. These contracts are written so that it is a violation of the contract to honor a picket line. So, if the AFTRA contract is approved, the 44,000 sag members who are also members of aftra can't participate in a strike. Most of the working actors, fall into this group. That is why the SAG leadership is trying to get the Aftra deal rejected, and why people like Tom Hanks who don't want there to be a strike are pushing to have it passed. So, let's hope it passes.

Today's news. Pretty much what we expected...
"De Facto" Strike Begins
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on Monday made the Screen Actors Guild a last, best offer -- which essentially mirrors the deal the studio and network group has already concluded with the Writers Guild of America, the Directors Guild of America and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. In a statement, the AMPTP said, "Our final offer to SAG represents a final hope for avoiding further work stoppages and getting everyone back to work." The group said it will end negotiations with the union but has agreed to meet with its leaders on Wednesday to answer any questions concerning the final offer. In its own statement, SAG said that it "is reviewing the complex package and will prepare a response to management once that analysis is complete." That response is not expected until after July 8, when AFTRA has indicated it will announce the results of a ratification vote on its own contract with the AMPTP. In the meantime, SAG advised its members to continue working "until further notice from the guild." However, little work is available to them, since the studios have shut down virtually all feature film production and television producers are winding down production as well. "Our industry is in a de facto strike," the AMPTP statement said.

From Studio Briefing today, some hope...
Hollywood Doubts Second Strike Will Hit
Feature film production at the major studios may have halted and TV filming may have slackened but few people in the entertainment business expect another full-scale strike to hit Hollywood again, according to trade and newspaper accounts. "There's a ubiquitous sense among studio and network execs, talent reps and multihyphenates that SAG does not have the bedrock of support among its members to call for a work stoppage," Daily Variety observed today (Wednesday). The Hollywood Reporter commented that by waging a three-front war -- against the studios, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the SAG locals in New York and Chicago -- the Hollywood leadership had painted itself into a corner, with little chance of securing strike authorization from members. On its website the AMPTP said that its final offer was worth $250 million and warned that a SAG strike would cost actors 2.5 million every day in lost wages. "The other guilds and unions would lose $13.5 million each day in wages, and the California economy will be harmed at the rate of $23 million each and every day," the AMPTP statement said.

Producers "Sweeten" Final Offer To SAG
In an effort to end the bargaining impasse with the Screen Actors Guild, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on Wednesday sweetened its final offer by upping the value of its proposed pay increases by $10 million if SAG ratifies the agreement by August 15. It had previously said that the offer was worth $250 million. "The producers have included this traditional incentive in the final offer in order to get everyone back to work and end the de facto strike," the AMPTP said. It added that not only would it remove the sweetener from the proposed deal on August 15, but it would also not agree to making the deal retroactive to July 1, the date that the previous contract expired. SAG said it would respond to the offer at a meeting with the producers scheduled for later today (Thursday). Most analysts expect the union to reject the offer and call for further negotiations.
Crap.
