Heading For A Long Impasse?
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers signaled Thursday that it was done negotiating with the Screen Actors Guild and that its "last, best, final offer" was indeed just that. The AMPTP insisted that SAG's leadership was "unreasonably" demanding more than was gained by other entertainment industry unions, including the Writers Guild of America (WGA), the Directors Guild of America (DGA), the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). "Our final offer to SAG members includes more than $250 million in additional compensation, important new media rights and protection for pension and health benefits. The refusal of SAG's Hollywood leadership to accept this offer is the latest in a series of actions by SAG leaders that, in our opinion, puts labor peace at risk," the AMPTP said. The AMPTP also asked the union to allow its members to vote on its offer -- something that the union leaders rejected out of hand, saying that they would not present a contract to the membership that they could not recommend. While analysts say that the AMPTP would likely agree to SAG's demands on product integration and force majeure, the union's insistence that those demands be tied with new media jurisdiction and DVD residuals -- issues that the AMPTP has indicated it will not further discuss -- would appear to make a long stalemate -- some say that it could last for months or even years -- inevitable. Entertainment industry attorney Jonathan Handel, who has represented the WGA in its negotiations with the AMPTP in the past, noted that SAG leaders have lost most, if not all, of their leverage in their talks with producers, who can now make separate deals with AFTRA or simply impose the terms of the current SAG contract, which is less beneficial to actors than the AFTRA pact. "In essence, SAG's Hollywood leadership has backed itself into a corner, then painted itself into it for good measure," Handel wrote in a commentary appearing in the online Huffington Post. "Meanwhile actors and the entire industry suffer from a work slowdown with little prospect of anything to show for it."
Looks like we might have to find another passtime, guys. Otherwise, we're going to be unhappy little campers, waiting and waiting for this thing to end.

some say that it could last for months or even years
Come on, that's ridiculous. A few months I can believe (see writer's strike), but not years. Hollywood can't take that kind of pressure for longer than a few months. It would suck if this would turn into another writer's strike déjà vu, but let's keep our faith that someone will buckle at some point. It also seems to change from day to day. One day it's that the strike is unlikely, the other day it's that the strike is almost sure. I refuse to believe in a strike until it's finally there.

Darn. Sounds like they might move shooting of KC back even further...
That's really annoying. Chris is still going to be in KC right? Or is it rumoured still?

According to IMDb, it's still rumored. However, after Buffy posted yesterday that Chris is interested in meeting the real Nate, it sounds like he's still committed to the role. So right now I'm not worried about him dropping out.

How mysterious...
AMPTP And SAG To Meet -- But Why?
Members of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said Tuesday that they have agreed to meet informally with members of the Screen Actors Guild today (Wednesday) "out of respect for the SAG membership," but they continued to insist that they are done negotiating. It was not clear what move the union intended to make at the meeting or whether the AMPTP was open to considering any new proposals. (Publicly it said only that the meeting "will be solely for the purpose of listening to whatever SAG has to say.") It noted pointedly that SAG had not told it why it had requested the meeting. In recent days, however, SAG officials have indicated that they want to resume bargaining.

More depressing news...
AMPTP Meets With SAG; What Next?
A terse statement released by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers following a two-hour meeting with the Screen Actors Guild on Wednesday raised new questions about what the two sides in Hollywood's bitter labor dispute will do next. "Both parties agreed that the contents of the meeting should be kept private," the statement said, adding that no further discussions had been scheduled at this time. The reference to "contents" immediately raised questions about whether the two sides had offered new proposals. If not, why then, were the discussions being kept secret? But mostly union members were asking, "Now what?" Several industry commentators were predicting that both sides will probably take a wait-and-see stance while SAG members decide whether the hard-line Membership First leadership will remain in control or whether a credible opposition can be mustered against them for the union's September elections. (July 24 is the deadline for nominations.) Most observers, however, are predicting that the current leadership will remain in place and that the stalemate will likely continue indefinitely.

I noticed that Eli Stone is going to start here soon, I'll take a look at it since Deb said it's a good show. Of course it will be dubbed here, but well, that's all I get here until they release it on DVD here.

I love "Eli Stone"! I hope it picks up a bigger audience in it's next season. I heard that Katie Holmes will be a new cast member this fall. Maybe that'll bring some attention to the show and help build a bigger audience. Or, failing that, maybe Mr. Cruise can help subsidize the show.;):P )

AMPTP Makes Direct Appeal To SAG Members
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has placed an ad in today's (Monday) Los Angeles Times quoting the leaders of the four major Hollywood unions who extolled the agreements that they had signed with the AMPTP earlier this year. The ad also notes that its final offer to SAG would result in $250 million in pay raises over three years, increases in minimum payments, pensions and health contributions, and the same terms for work in new media that were accepted by the other unions. But at a membership meeting on Saturday, SAG leaders bashed the previous agreements and insisted that they would hold out for better terms. Meanwhile, today's L.A. Times, citing unnamed guild insiders, reported that at a board meeting scheduled for July 26, SAG leaders will likely decide to put the studios' offer to a membership vote -- either without an endorsement or with a recommendation that it be rejected.

I think ABC just got hacked in my area somehow. The colored bars of death came on, then an "emergency" news cast came on, saying that a banana farmer in Portugal has been linked to terrorism and was suppling them with bananas and that he's now out of business. Then the screen got snowy and there was a hidden message inside: "let's see you try to code this!". :clueless:

Actor Says Stars Should Contribute To Actors' Earnings
Actor Peter Coyote has suggested that stars who earn millions of dollars for their performances in movies ought to share the wealth with established character actors, who have seen their earnings rolled back as the stars' skyrocket. Coyote, best known for his role as the scientist trying to track down E.T., suggests that the Screen Actors Guild ought to call upon leading actors to kick back "a modest amount, say on salaries over $6 million," to lift the pay of actors they are working with -- if producers act similarly. Such a move, he wrote in an open letter to lead actors, "would provide the ancillary benefit of insuring that you consistently play opposite actors of the highest caliber." Coyote also added that "such a gesture would buttress your peers who cannot win such gains for themselves except by sabotaging the entire industry with a strike," which also prevents lead actors from working.
