Planet of the Apes comes to Blu-Ray

There's big Blu-ray news today, folks: 20th Century Fox has just announced the Planet of the Apes: 40 Year Evolution Blu-ray Collection for release on 11/4 in the U.S. (as well as "throughout the Fall" internationally), and it looks like really a beautiful box set. The U.S. SRP will be $159.98. For that, you'll get a 5-disc set that includes all five vintage Apes films (Planet of the Apes, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and Battle for the Planet of the Apes) in full 1080p resolution with audio in English 5.1 DTS MA (as well as English, Spanish and French Dolby Digital mono, and English and Spanish subtitles). For the first time in the U.S., Conquest of the Planet of the Apes will be presented in its unrated version, with 8 minutes of additional footage. New Blu-ray extras will include a BonusView Science of the Apes viewing option, the Beyond the Forbidden Zone adventure game and 8 HD featurettes (A Public Service Announcement from ANSA, Evolution of the Apes, Impact of the Apes, From Alpha to Omega: Building a Sequel, The Secret Behind Escape, Riots and Revolutions: Confronting the Times and End of an Epic: The Final Battle). Each sequel film will include an isolated score track in 5.1 DTS MA. You'll also get an extensive booklet with artwork and liner notes.

On top of that, you'll get all of the previously released DVD extras too, including commentary by composer Jerry Goldsmith, commentary by actors Roddy McDowall, Natalie Trundy, Kim Hunter and makeup artist John Chambers, text commentary by Eric Greene (author of Planet of the Apes as American Myth), the Behind the Planet of the Apes documentary (with all new interactivity and a timeline), many additional SD featurettes and clips (including a Behind the Planet of the Apes promo (1988), Planet of the Apes makeup test with Edward G. Robinson (1966), Roddy McDowall on-set footage, Planet of the Apes dailies and outtakes (No Audio), the Planet of the Apes NATO presentation (1967), a Planet of the Apes vintage featurette (1968), A Look Behind the Planet of the Apes (1972), Don Taylor Directs Escape from the Planet of the Apes and J. Lee Thompson Directs Conquest of the Planet of the Apes), original theatrical trailers, original sketches by costume designer Morton Haack, a photo gallery, a Planet of the Apes timeline, interactive pressbooks, vintage Apes newspaper galleries, advertising and lobby card galleries, and behind-the-scenes galleries.

To sum up, this set looks AWESOME if you're a true Apes fan. Here's a look at the packaging for the set...

For those of you who want the DVD version, you might recall the previously released Limited Edition Planet of the Apes: Ultimate Collection DVD box set, that was packaged in a replica ape head. That will be available again on 11/4 for the new lower price of SRP $179.98 (sans the new HD extras).

Re: Planet of the Apes comes to Blu-Ray

I've been an apeophile for as long as I can remember.  I even have all the original black & white comic/magazines.  And I've read Eric Greene's fascinating book.  I would LOVE to have this incredible Blu-Ray set, except for the whole not having a Blu-Ray player hang-up.  I am especially interested in all the documentaries and the unrated version of Conquest, which is my favorite of the films.  It was Roddy's favorite too, BTW.  It's a shame that it doesn't also include the fun live action and goofy animated TV series.  smile

I don't own a Blu-Ray player either. But I got to admit this set looks great.

Deb, have you ever seen the Ape head DVD set?

All 14 discs fit inside the ape head.

If I could have afforded it I would have bought that set. But all I need know is the TV series and the animated series.

Re: Planet of the Apes comes to Blu-Ray

Yeah, I've seen pictures of it.  And I wanted it too!  I only have the live action series taped off TV, with commercials no less.  I'd love to have it on DVD.  And I've only ever seen three eps of the animated series.  I have a few cool Apes collectibles, my favorite being a rubber piggy bank of Galen from the TV series.  I bet there's a ton of stuff on eBay.  My friend, Isabel has a bunch of goodies too, including the tree house from Battle and the board game.  We used to scour antique and memorabilia stores for these things back in the 80's.

Re: Planet of the Apes comes to Blu-Ray

When I was little I owned the ape action figure from Mego. Don't know if I still do or not.

Talking about collectibles.

I own the following Star Trek items from Mego.

Including all these action figures.

Plus box-fulls of the Playmates Star Trek action figures, a few of the Playmates Star Trek spaceships.

Re: Planet of the Apes comes to Blu-Ray

Cool.  smile

Apes was the only thing I ever actively collected toys from.  I forgot, I also have Cornelius and Zira action figures.  I have the original book and all the novelizations of the other movies too.

I do have a couple of toys... I have one of the sets of Mulder & Scully action figures and one of the Willow & Tara sets from Buffy too.

From the Atlanta Braves, I have John Smoltz and Andruw Jones collectible figurines.  That's about it.  Not a big collector of that sort of stuff.

Gorillas are the thugs of the Apes world.  But Chimps are quite wonderful, the scientists and intellectuals.  smile

Re: Planet of the Apes comes to Blu-Ray

It is really interesting how much love there is for conquest.  I would have to go with the first one as my favorite, but conquest is a close second.  Yet, when they came out, escape was the one everyone loved and conquest got kind of ignored(sometimes even pushed into a group with battle, which was terrible), I always thought I was alone in my love of that film.

Re: Planet of the Apes comes to Blu-Ray

Escape was a lot of fun.  Totally illogical, but tremendous fun.  Conquest is deep as hell and black as pitch.  The intensity is what I love.  And it's one of the finest pieces of acting Roddy turned in in his entire 60+ years as an actor.  The scene in the corridor where Caesar reveals himself to McDonald just blows my mind every single time.

Re: Planet of the Apes comes to Blu-Ray

Oh for God's sake, make up your mind, Hollywood!  One day, it won't be resoved till September.  The next, they're going back to work ASAP...

Hollywood Goes Back To Work

The de facto strike that has slowed television production and virtually halted motion picture production at the major studios is expected to be brushed aside and postponed projects revved up again by the end of the month, Hollywood's primary trade publications forecast today (Friday). "The majors [studios] are coming to the conclusion that SAG's all bark and no bite when it comes to going on strike," Daily Variety observed. Likewise, the Hollywood Reporter noted that the industry has generally come to the conclusion that even if the current SAG leadership is returned to power in next month's scheduled election, they "would likely not be able to muster the 75 percent vote necessary to authorize a strike." Both trade publications noted that several high-profile projects have already gone before the cameras, including Sony's Angels & Demons, Disney's Prince of Persia, Warner's Gran Torino, Fox's Night at the Museum II, and Paramount/DreamWorks's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. However, SAG Executive Director Doug Allen told Variety: "Industry representatives would be better served to focus on reaching agreement, as we are, and should refrain from daring SAG members to strike."
