One of my friends who I recently got in it flat out asked me if there was a third season and if I didn't want him to see it because Joan dies. He was convinced from the first episode, the show would end with her dying. And I think he's probably right.
So not only what would our lives be like if we never watched it, what would they be like if the show ended with Joan's death?
That's a very interesting theory. I never really thought of it before. I couldn't even imagine Joan dying. That's 2 sad.

I'm with Carol. Because yeah, it's 2 sad.

Interesting thought, but I can't imagine it was the intended ending for the series. I have had thought before that it may have been a blessing that it ended when it did. I have mentioned before that I have problems with the last few episodes, and I definately didn't like the direction it seemed to be going. So, if it had a third season, they may have ruined it in my eyes. I keep thinking about St. Elsewhere. It was one of my favorite shows when it was on, but after that stupid last episode, I can't even watch it now. If we could have had another season of the JOA we all love, that would have been wonderful, but that may not have been the show we would have gotten.

There's a lot going on inside those snow globes, Rick.;) Amazingly well put, as always.

Obviously, I never wanted her to die. Shawn didn't either, he loves Joan, it's just an ending he had in his head. But then, he thought the only possible way Friends could end was if someone died. He can be a tiny bit morbid.

Just imagine what that would do to Adam. Chances are they'd pull a Joss Whedon (Angel: A Hole In The World) and kill her right after Joan and Adam had reached some sort of amends. But then again maybe I've just been watching too many Whedon creations.

Well, they did mess up Northern Exposure really bad in the last couple of years, so I guess anything's possible.

Phoebe, right? Although it would've been best if they'd gotten Joey before he went to California.;)

Just thinking about that possibility makes me sad.

Me too.
I think I'll stick with Butterflies instead of thinking anymore about the tragedy following Joan's death because it is just far too sad.

Have you read the whole Butterflies fanfic, Sara?

Sure have. I wouldn't miss out on the A/J goodness.

Cool. Have you written any A/J fanfics?

I have one on fanfiction.net. If you want the link, I'll send you it.
I have a bad habit of not finishing fanfiction so I don't really post them often (ever, really).

I would really like to read it. Please post the URL.

No JoA this week, but I checked up to see what's going on and it's back on the 15th. I guess those mummy movies they want to air tomorrow night are just far too important so it had to be bumped this week. Then again, since they're pushing the show pretty heavily at SciFi.com, maybe they just didn't want to "waste" an ep running it against the Olympic Opening Ceremonies.

Good thinkin'. I was glad to see it was coming back on the 15th. I bothered me that they changed the timing one week and didn't air it at all the next. So on the 18th we get "Just Say No" and Nate Dushku. After that comes the good stuff. I think "Bringeth It On" was the first episode I really loved.

I think the first one that blew me away was Death Be Not Whatever. Which we get on the 29th.

You know, Just Say No is really a great episode if you're not just watching it for A/J content. A lot happens. And the A/J content we do get is excellent.
I gotta go get a pizza now. I have a jones.

There is a real joy in watching this show again on TV. For some reason, it is better than watching it on dvd, maybe because you get to savor each episode on it's own, instead of moving on to the next one.
I think this is the last episode before the show hit it's groove. The various stories still didn't fit together quite right, I have always felt that Bringth it on was the first episode where it all started playing together. they found the rythmn which would be there until almost the end of the second season.
Just say no is still an interesting episode, as they are expanding the characters, and developing things which will work well for them though out the series.
One interesting thing, (especially for this group), is that for me, they hit their stride on the Adam/Joan relationship before the whole show had. I think they found it in The Boat, and it plays really well in this one. I know I know, Adam is barely in this episode, but what is there is perfect. The look on his face in the background when Joan is talking to the other guy, it says it all. He has completely fallen for her. Then when he tells her that her boyfriend is a jerk and stole her fathers badge, he isn't getting any enjoyment out of it(the usual way a show would play this). Instead he is clearly upset that he is hurting her. That is what love really is, not wanting to win the girl, but wanting the girl to be happy. The show was already exploring love through their relationship, even if it hadn't started yet.
Joan: So, my true nature is to be a catalyst? That is mad anti-climatic.
God: Anti climactic. Anti-climatic means you're against the weather.

You're right, Rick. It still hadn't quite hit it's full stride. But I think the ep is a little bigger than you do maybe. Will had to fire his LT. Helen finally told Joan about what happened to her. Kevin met Rebecca, the first woman he would (eventually) be with after his accident. And it was finally, anviliciously undeniable that Adam was mad for Joan. In that scene where he tells her about Clay, did you catch how he flinches when she accuses him of enjoying having to tell her what a jerk the guy was? She stung him with that one.
BTW, I agree with you about how much fun it is watching it on TV again, in it's original timeslot, no less. Very nostalgic. And knowing that others are discovering it for the first time and that we will inevitably meet some of them here and on IMDb is so cool.

If I gave the impression that I don't think it is good, that wasn't my point. I think every episode of the series (except maybe the last couple) are at least very very good and for the most part excellent. The things you mentioned were good and interesting in how they shaped the characters, and the episode works in every way. I was just reacting to how it felt within the overall series. (and I think looking forward to the upcoming weeks when the show really works for me)

No, I just wanted to elaborate on what I meant. I didn't think you were saying it wasn't good. I think what I was getting at is that it's one that you can really appreciate in retrospect. Because you see all these things being set up that would pay off later.

Bringith it on, there are so many things about this episode that hit me tonight. One thing I hadn't remembered or noticed before, is that this is the first time Kevin really feels like the big brother (which was one of the small things I really loved about the series) when Luke needs his help, he talks him through his doubts then says "don't make me do this again". That is a perfect sibling reaction.
As I said before, and am really feel now, this is the first episode which hit what I love about the series. The police story, the school story. the family story and the God story are really conncected in a story sense, but also in a themeatic sense. The episode is about trust and friendship. and it explores it from all angles. Grace is worried about the direction Joan is taking in her life, and Grace looks for solutions, and in the end shows up to support Joan. Joan when confronted with negative comments about Grace, only sort of defends her, and learns how bad that is. Then there are the cheerleaders who dump their friend when she is in trouble.
And finally, there is Adam. Who has the truest form of friendship. He doesn't question the changes in Joan, he understands that it is just all what makes Jane, Jane. That is one of my favorite Adam lines "I just like hanging out with you cuz you're... Jane". That is what friendship is supposed to be, and should be, but rarely is.
As to the Adam/Joan story. Well (see above), this is one of the episodes which showed that the relationship had true friendship at it's core, which is why it was a special tv relationship(and would be a special one in the real world).
This episode had that great moment when Joan touches Adam"s hand and he melts. I think this is also the first time Joan is starting to see (and feel) what is going on. She notices Adam's reaction to the touch, and for the first time seems to enjoy the name "Jane". The little glow of appreciation on her face during that scene is really beautiful, and I think her deeper feelings begin to grow here.

God: Anti climactic. Anti-climatic means you're against the weather.

Great observations, Rick. I think all us 'shippers love it when Adam's mind goes all gooey just from an innocent touch to his arm from Joan. I also always loved this ep as the real beginning of Grace's rise as a great character. It's the first time she's really "our" Grace.
I just wish Sci-Fi would stop preempting the show! We have to wait two weeks for Death Be Not Whatever! Grrrrr!
