Yeah, but at least "Kirk" still works. I haven't seen Damon or Keenan Ivory in ages. Ford does still look good, but for some reason the earring depresses me. As for DeForrest Kelley, he was a doctor, dammit!;)

Yeah, the earring is weird to me too. It's almost as cool as Ed Bradley having one.

For some reason, Studio Briefing Today has been non-functional since 8/8. But I found a way around the problem, I think. Good news from the dissident front:
Stars Support SAG Dissidents
14 August 2008 10:24 AM, PDTAlthough they themselves presumably don't have enough time to run for a place on the Screen Actors Guild's national board, a group of prominent actors on Wednesday endorsed a dissident group of not-so-well-known actors who do. The group signed a message to SAG's membership from Sally Field saying that the actions of the union's current leadership had "destroyed" her faith in its ability "to effectively represent our interests as performers." She particularly condemned the leadership's inability to form a united front with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists against the producers. "If this leadership stays in place, the bad relations with AFTRA will persist, and we'll continue to negotiate contracts from a position of division and weakness," she said. Among 49 other actors supporting Field in calling for support of the candidate slate called Unite for Strength were such stars as Alec Baldwin, Ed Begley, Jr., Lewis Black, Peter Coyote, Marcia Cross, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Tom Hanks, Patricia Heaton, Felicity Huffman, Anthony Lapaglia, Rob Lowe, William H. Macy, Ron Perlman, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Tony Shalhoub, Elizabeth Shue, Gary Sinise, Eric Stoltz, John Turturro, Nia Vardalos, and Steven Weber. Previously Unite for Strength had been criticized for its inability to persuade well-known actors to challenge the leadership slate known as Membership First in September's board election.
Not that it will make any difference.

This is not good news for MGM, which is not good news for Fanboys...
Wagner's Exit Rocks UA
14 August 2008 10:24 AM, PDTIn an announcement that stunned Hollywood, Paula Wagner, Tom Cruise's business partner, said Wednesday that she is stepping down as CEO of United Artists in order "to return to my true love, which is making movies." Wagner and Cruise had been recruited by MGM chief Harry Sloan in 2006 to revive UA and given a 30-percent ownership of the studio, but the studio's projects have been minimal. It has released only one movie, Lions for Lambs, starring Cruise, which flopped. (Another film, Valkyrie, also starring Cruise is due to be released on December 26.) In a statement, MGM said that their ownership interest would not be affected by Wagner's decision and that it hoped Wagner and Cruise would continue to work together on future UA film productions. Reporting on Wagner's departure, the Los Angeles Times commented today (Thursday) that it represented "a black eye for Sloan, whose plan for UA is unraveling at a time when he is attempting to raise hundreds of millions of dollars in sorely needed film financing for debt-ridden MGM."
But it also doesn't surprise me. Tommy and Paula are just not doing well with their stewardship of UA. Time for both of them to step down and let the grown-ups run the show.

Rocky Horror Creator Horrified By TV Movie Plans
14 August 2008 10:24 AM, PDTWednesday's announcement that the 1975 cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show would be remade for Britain's Sky Movies and the U.S.'s MTV has been knocked by the film's original creator, Richard O'Brien. Although the announcement said that O'Brien would co-produce the new version, O'Brien himself told the BBC: "I'm not co-producing it and I won't be involved in any way. The first I heard about it was when people sent me cuttings from U.S. papers." He also denied the suggestion that he had given the movie a seal of approval. "It doesn't have my blessing," he said. "I don't know where they'll go with it really. ... I've even heard that they're going to put new songs in. I wrote the book, the music and the lyrics. Where are they going to get the songs from? Who's going to do that? That's a bit strange isn't it?"

OK, some of you know that I'm a big fan of Haley Joel Osment. I hadn't checked up in a while, but there's finally a trailer for this promising high school basketball drama he did with Ryan Merriman (love him too!), called Home Of The Giants:

Actually, they've had a trailer since at least April '07: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea … id=8471122 But the one you posted is different. I think I stumbled across the first one in November '07 (and posted a blog entry about it on my MySpace, I believe). I think I'm gonna love this movie, so I'm gonna check out the new trailer when I get home. Thanks for posting.

And I'll have to check out the old trailer. The cool thing about the official site is how in-depth it is. For instance, it has the evolution of the poster and you can see every incarnation of it. This movie was made with a lot of love and I really respect how much effort everyone involved put into it. The new trailer is very fast-paced and makes the movie look really appealing, in my opinion.

New York and Los Angeles (August 27, 2008) – Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) and the advertising industry's ANA/AAAA Joint Policy Committee on Broadcast Talent Union Relations (JPC) today jointly announced an agreement to extend, through March 31, 2009, the terms of their Commercials Contracts. The extension adds six months to the previous two-year extension the parties agreed to, which covered the period from 2006 to 2008. That extension was set to expire on October 29, 2008.

So this means that people can get back to work for now. Yay! And maybe SAG can get rid of Alan Rosenberg before the new extension runs out. He was obviously NOT helping an agreement get made. Maybe the next president will be better. Thanks for posting that, Illinois!

Producers Blast SAG's Push Poll
2 September 2008 10:38 AM, PDTThe Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has called the Screen Actors Guild's "push poll" urging members to back its negotiating stance a "delay tactic ... designed to deliver just one thing: a result preordained by SAG's negotiators." The postcard poll was included in a mailing sent to members over the weekend along with a 14-page newsletter headed, "Your negotiating committee fights on to achieve a fair contract." The newsletter also claims once again that SAG negotiators are continuing to hold informal discussions with the AMPTP, something the AMPTP continues to deny.

But here's why production is picking up again, like we've been hearing about. Maybe we won't have anymore hassles with this stuff until next year...
Advertisers, Unions Extend Contract
28 August 2008 10:01 AM, PDTWhile TV and film producers have still been unable to reach an agreement with the Screen Actors Guild on a new contract, the advertising industry and SAG, joined by the American Federation of Television Artists, have quickly agreed to extend their agreement to March 31, 2009 while they study ways to compensate actors for commercial work intended primarily for new media, including the Internet, cell phones, and mobile devices. The decision to extend the contract was apparently reached without formal meetings, making it unnecessary for the feuding members of the actors' unions to sit together at one end of the bargaining table.

This is cool! Fantastic Fest is hosting a screening of the uncut version of Conquest Of The Panet Of The Apes...
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes: The Unseen Cut
J. Lee Thompson 1972
Categories: Feature, Postapocalyptic, Sci Fi
Pictures
Run time: 97 min. | USA | Language: EnglishWhen most film series reach their fourth episode, one usually expects the creative crew to be on autopilot and give the audience the same-old, same-old; to not do anything new or challenging that would drive viewers away. In fact, only a complete nutter would make the fourth film in a series the bleakest and darkest of them all, because where could you go from there? Who would want to see a series that was so entertaining turn depressing all of a sudden?
It may have seemed that the makers of CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES were painting themselves into a corner, but in truth, they were just working off an entire series that didn't do things by the book. After all, the previous APES films also ended memorably, with the destruction of the Earth and the death of the series most likable characters, so audiences had come to expect some tough twists and turns. What they got with CONQUEST was something different altogether - darker, more political and apocalyptic. Its themes of civil rights and social unrest spoke very much to the times, while its setting of a totalitarian future looks as bleak today as it did back in 1972, yet strangely more plausible. But it's also a solid entertainment, too, with an incredible action climax that features of the best work of J. Lee Thompson's career and Roddy McDowall's finest performance in the entire APES series.
Naturally, we're expecting some of you to ask, "Why the F are you showing CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES at Fantastic Fest?" Two reasons: One, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the APES series, and to honor this, Fox Home Entertainment is releasing the entire series of Blu-Ray DVD this November; and two, included in this set is the original, uncut version of CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, with 9 additional minutes of footage removed so the film could obtain a PG rating. This version of the film hasn't been seen in over 35 years, and Fantastic Fest will be hosting the first public screening since its 1972 test screenings. And best of all, it's absolutely free, so whether you have a badge or not, you're all welcome to see the second best APES film as it hasn't been seen in decades in a glorious new HD master, courtesy of our friends at Fox Home Entertainment. There will also be some DVD giveaways courtesy of Fox and some previews for upcoming Fox DVD releases. Come witness the birth of the PLANET OF THE APES like you've never seen before - before anyone else does! (Matthew Kiernan)

Unreleased Indie Films To Get VOD Exposure
15 September 2008 10:40 AM, PDTIndependent filmmakers who have been unable to find a distributor for their productions -- and that includes the majority of them -- are about to get a boost from the Sundance Channel, which New York-based Cablevision acquired last year from Robert Redford and partners NBC and CBS. Today's (Monday) Los Angeles Times reported that the channel plans to launch a video-on-demand service called Sundance Selects that will offer about 50 mostly unreleased movies a year. Joshua Sapan, president and CEO of Sundance parent Rainbow Media, told the newspaper that he believes that Sundance Select "will democratize and emancipate independent film. ... The market is hardly efficient. It is increasingly becoming a system in service of blockbusters."
