Re: Randomness

Hey everyone, please say a prayer or keep a good thought for our friend Carol.  I haven't heard from her in a little while, and I hope everything's OK.  The Gulf Coast of Texas is about to get socked over the next couple of days by Hurricane Ike and they're ordering evacuations in Houston where she lives.  Also, Joe's boyfriend, John is in Austin until Sunday.  Joe's worried about him too.  So let's all wish the best for our friends and everyone else along the coastline this weekend.

Re: Randomness

UPDATE: I heard from Carol.  I finally thought to log in to YM and I found that she'd IM'd me last night to say that they were evacuating.  This is expected to be a very bad storm.  Gas prices already took a jump today.  Let's all keep a good thought that Carol's house makes it through OK.

I have a lot of family and friends in Texas, especially in Austin. My fingers are crossed that Carol will be okay.

Re: Randomness

I think Western PA got hit with what's left of Ike last night.  The power went out about 9:30 and just came back on about an hour ago.   No rain, just lots of wind.  It hit 79 miles per hour at one point and blew my front door open so hard there's a big hole in the wall now where the door knob went through it.

Re: Randomness

All we got from it was lots and lots of rain.

Flooding in some areas. O'Hare airport got around 8 inches of rain.

I just saw a report on CNN where some lady was looking at her home in Texas and she left her two dogs in crates and they drowned. She has no money and hopes that FEMA can help. Her and her son will be sleeping in their truck.

I wonder how many may become homeless from this.

Re: Randomness

That's so sad.  I watched the news all day Saturday and there was a lot of devastation.  I hope Carol's house survived OK.

Wow, that sounds horrible. Why did she have to leave them behind? I don't think I would ever leave my pets behind.

Re: Randomness

She might not have had enough room for them in her car, and most shelters don't allow pets and I heard the ones that would were full very fast.   If it's a choice between having a warm and dry place to stay or having your pets with you, a bunch of people would probably choose the shelter.

Re: Randomness

I'd let my cat out.  Instinct would probably protect him.  He'd find high ground.  But I'd bring Dixie with me no matter what.  Fortunately, she's tiny.  Maybe that lady's dogs were large or something.  But still, I would not have left them in their kennels.  I would've found a way to protect them.

Re: Randomness

Yeah, I think locking them up was stupid of her.  If they weren't in kennels, they might have been able to try to swim at least.

Not yet, but I sent her another YM night before last to ask her to check in as soon as she can and let us know how she fared.  I'll let you guys know when I hear from her.
