Awww, I love cheesy martial art films! The only film I've ever seen, that was dubbed, is Air bud! We get all kinds of films here, it's a really multi-cultural society so we have all kinds of stuff.

Here in The Netherlands only the movies that are for children are dubbed when you go see them at the movie theater, and you can always choose to see the movie in the original version in the movie theater. If the movie is in English (Original Version) I prefer non-subtitled, non-dubbed. If it's in an other language than English or Dutch, I prefer subtitled. I don't like dubbing at all.

I get them from all over the world, usually from the UK because they are cheaper there (and no shipping and handling costs). But some dvd's I really need to get them from the US or from Australia, like some of the dvd from Ryan Merriman, Michael Welch or Damian Lewis. The region code doesn't matter to me.

In Europe it very much depends on the country, Larry. There are some countries that dub everything (Germany, France, Italy, ...) and there are some countries that never dub (Scandinavia, the Netherlands, ...). Here in Germany, it is very very rare that they will show anything with subtitles instead of dubbing it. I'd say that 99% of all foreign TV programs/movies are dubbed in Germany. Even though I hate the dubbing, I think the Germans are pretty good at it. They do try to match the mouth movements with the dialogue as best as possible and they also try to stay true to the original dialogue. Of course, especially with comedy, some things just don't translate well.

The worst dubbers must be the eastern European countries. I've seen movies "dubbed" into Russian. What they call dubbing is actually just one person narrating the whole movie. You still hear the original dialogue in the background and there's one guy who just does a translated voice-over. I've been force to watch the movie Chocolat that way, and the emotion in the dubber's voice was just sheer boredom. Through the whole movie. It is beyond me how anyone can enjoy a movie that way...

I personally would rather that they subtitle everything, but that's because I love the English language so much. If they suddenly decided to go from dubbing to subtitling in Germany, there would be a huge uproar of the general public. That's why I'm pretty sure we'll be stuck with the dubbing for a long time.

I have a codefree DVD player and codefree software on my computer, and I own quite a few RC-1 DVDs. Most of my Chris DVDs are RC-1. Some of them aren't available in Germany or they're only released a lot later than in the US (or are more expensive).

Yeah, what Tina said. I hate the dubbing, too. And I wish I could buy DVDs from the US because I am tired of waiting for the DVDs to come out in Germany, if at all.

Pretty much the same in Finland. Kid's movies are dubbed in theaters. On DVD you can choose the original, you can shoose subtitles for it (in all scandinavian languages) or you can choose the findub, swededub, norweigian dub or denmarkdub.

I forgot to mention this: On 95% of all DVDs you buy in Germany, you can choose between the German and the original language version (yay for me!). There's a few that will only have the German dubbed version, probably because they didn't get the rights to include the original language on it. Very often, you also have the option of watching the original language with German subtitles, if you're so inclined. I've also had DVDs where, if you don't want to watch the German version, the German subtitles were mandatory, so you would either have German language or German subtitles. I think that was the case with the Good Will Hunting DVD. That's why I bought it in the UK...

Also, in Germany, if you wanna watch movies without dubbing in the theater, you'll have to live near a big city that has a theater that will show movies without dubbing. Everything is dubbed by default, and it's only the bigger cities that will have usually only one theater that shows movies without dubbing. And then only a select few, most of the time. There is one theater in Düsseldorf and one in Cologne in my area. The Cologne one often has German subtitles for their movies too. I know that there is one original version theater in Munich too. Berlin might have more than one. And from Anne I know there's one in Stuttgart too.

If you wanna watch your movies without dubbing in Germany, you're very much at the mercy of these few theaters and you might have to drive quite a long way to go there, depending on where you live. And of course it often happens that I wanna see a movie very badly, but that none of the OV theaters shows it. It will undoubtedly happen with one or the other Chris movie coming to theaters in the future, and that's really gonna irk me.

Really? My mom has the German GWH DVD and I can't remember the subtitles were mandatory. But wait, I still have the DVD here, I can check.

What I hate the most is that they often do not put any extras on the German DVDs. THAT SUCKS! :fedup:

Maybe it wasn't Good Will Hunting then. I thought it was. I know that the Trainspotting DVD didn't have the English language version on it. And some Keanu Reeves DVDs don't, like Sweet November.
