Re: Obama won!

Yep.  I like Rahm Emanuel too.  Glad he's gonna be Chief Of Staff.  The character, John Lyman on The West Wing was based on Rahm, just in case anyone didn't know that.  smile

And I really want Robert Kennedy Jr. to be the Enviromental czar.  I love Bobby.  Always read his blogs online and listen to his radio show when I can.  He really, really, really cares about the planet.  Nobody would be better at that job.

Re: Obama won!

sorry for being ignorant on this but who is rahm???:embarrassed:

congrats to obama. i only saw few speeches of obama and mccain. an i also saw some speeches of sarah pallin since everybody was saying she is incredibly stupid. i was very socked by some debates. i mean i can't believe that a country like america still talks about making abortion illegal. i lived in a country where abortion was illegal and since also romanians were forbidden from leaving the country  , the women went for some very dangerous methods ( maybe you have seen the movie 4 months 3 weeks 2 day and if you did you know a fraction of what i am talking about ). i heard this talk with sarah pallin where she said she was against the morning after pill also. neutral it really freaked me out.
also i saw mccain on ellen degeneres show where he tried to explain to her why he oposses gay marriages and he looked pretty bad while doing it.

i know that these issues are actually sort of non-issues used to make people forget the economical mass  but still it scares me to hear such things.

Yeah, it's nuts.  Palin's against contraception and abortion, and yet somehow, mysteriously, her 17 YO daughter's knocked up.  Just goes to show you that abstinence only education DOES NOT WORK.  roll

You can read all about Rahm here:  http://www.house.gov/emanuel/aboutrahm.shtml

Re: Obama won!

I think it's Palin that really lowered McCain's chances in winning.

I saw a clip of McCain on Ellen's show. Who told him that was a good idea? Ellen did a great job of maintaining her cool, though.

Re: Obama won!

I agree about Palin not being the best choice of VP, to put it very politely, but McCain had a lot of problems of his own.  And I love the way Ellen handled herself that day.  She's always been a class act.

Re: Obama won!

The one thing I hated about McCain was him saying "My friends" every few minutes in each speech. It was so pandering and if anyone thought he was your friend then I think you're very wrong. He doesn't even know you at all. All he was doing was trying to manipulate and pander to the crowd.

And Pallin. Gee I couldn't stand her voice and how she talked. Then the entire 150 thousand on clothes and stuff to just make her look good. That's more money than some people make in 4 or 5 years and she spent it on clothes. I mean you're trying to pander to Joe six-pack and Joe the plumber and average folk and you're spending that kind of money on clothes. She tried and portray herself as being just like the average Joe (or Joe's wife), but the average person doesn't spend that kind of money on clothes probably in their entire lifetime.

It also didn't help that their own base true colors showed up during the campaign. You had that old lady saying that she couldn't trust Obama because he was an Arab or people yelling out terrible things during their appearances such as "Terrorist" or worse.

I am just so happy that Obama got elected. I couldn't stand McCain saying "My friends" for 4 more years or Pallin voice either.

Re: Obama won!

Her problems were way bigger than that.  Being an ignorant podunk comes to mind.  And now it's coming out that she was a diva who threw tantrums when she didn't get her way.  Pathetic.  If this is the best and brightest the Republicans have to offer, they're toast.

Re: Obama won!

Bush cheated, Irina.  The Republicans have always done a lot of shady stuff around voting.  In 2000, he didn't win, he was appointed by the Supreme Court after Florida --- under the authority of sleazy GOP hack, Katherine Harris --- ended the recount.  In 2004, there was fraud in Ohio that probably swung the election for Bush again.  Check out the movie "Recount" if you can find it on DVD.  It tells the story of what happened in Florida in 2000.  It'll piss you off big time.

Meanwhile, if anyone would like a free Obama victory sticker, you can go here to order it...

Re: Obama won!

Yeah, and the court at the time still had a bunch of conservative Republicans who were getting old and wanted to retire.  Some of them were appointed by Nixon (1968-1974).  What I never understood was why, when Dubya's favorability ratings were already tanking, did he get re-elected in 2004.  And this was after we all knew how smart he wasn't and that they'd lied us into a war with Iraq.  The mind boggles!

Re: Obama won!

I think Bush got re-elected because it was so soon after 9/11. People were still very fearful of another attack. Remember all of those terror alert warnings and the color coded bar.

Also it was happening during the Iraq war. I guess voters thought he could handle it better than Kerry could have. I also don't think that Swift-boat attack on Kerry helped him too much with veterans or then current military.

Re: Obama won!

You're right about that too Illinois. They couldn't have stolen it if it wasn't close.  And they made it close by fear-mongering and their sickening smear tactics.  They tried that this time, but the American people have finally wised-up to those games.  We saw Obama staying above the fray, taking the high road, and talking about peace and hope and getting back on the road to prosperity, and that's what we want.  I think maybe we also feel like we can trust him to tell us the truth a bit more than his predecessors.

Re: Obama won!

i am very puzzled by the way americans vote. i don't really understand the system.
in romania it is very easy ( which doesn't mean there weren't cheating suspicions from time to time sad ). in romania anybody that is a romanian citizen and is over 18 years old gets to vote. they just have to go to a voting booth.

i hear on some american show, that in america people have to register to vote. what is that? and what are the electors? i don't know if i wrote the word right but i heared it on tv.

thank you for all the answers girls. it is always interesting to learn about other countries. plus what happens in america is interesting because it decides a lot about the rest of the world.

same thing in NZ. but then it's an entirely diferent political system since it's parlimentary. it's easy as anything two ticks one for the party and one for the regional/electrate candidate. Then seats for parliment get allocated according to the party vote and the electrate/regional winners. the coalition that can get a majority of seats wins. thats pretty much it. government formed smile .

it was the nz general election yesterday and I voted for the first time. The party I wanted in power won, so it was pretty good result. The nine years of a labour government is over, so that's cause for celebration in my book.
