Star Trek (General discussion)

Thought it might be a good idea to start a general discussion about Star Trek (films and/or TV).

First I thought I'd post what I think of each of the films.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture: The Director's Edition:
- I prefer the Director's Edition over the theatrical version or even the Extended Edition. The enhanced FX really helps the film. The new FX look almost as if they were filmed back in 1979. None of them stick out like a sore thumb like the new FX in the Star Wars Special Editions. Probably the most beautiful shots of the Enterprise in any of the films. Likely the most "science fiction" of the trek films before it all was about action. The one thing though that was bad was the skin tight costumes. I really didn't need to see people with very little left to the imagination.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan:
- Among the best of the Trek films. Some of the best space battle sequences in the series. Great villain and still a heart-tugging ending even after all of these years.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock:
- The most "Vulcan" of the Trek films. Some very funny moments. The stealing of the Enterprise is very good. Really too bad that the space battle was over before it even began. Plus the destruction of the Enterprise is sort of sad since she was a major character.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home:
- Among the best of the Trek films. Very funny parts with an overall good message.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier:
- Gee what happened here. In my book the worst of the Trek films. It's like a westernized version of Star Trek. The wost special effects done in a Trek film, for that matter maybe the worst FX in a science fiction film that I've seen. Plus the story is just kind of dumb.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country:
- Again among the best of the Trek films. A great send-off to the original cast. Nice tie-ins with the Next Generation storyline that was going on during that time. The second best space battle in the Original cast of Trek films.

Star Trek: Generations:
- An ok Trek film. Really nice to see the Enterprise B & D on the big screen. Too bad that they destroyed the D though. Some good space battles. The Nexus idea was weird though. Plus if Kirk & Picard could travel back in time to any point then why back to the planet? Why not capture Soran when he first met Picard on the Enterprise D?

Star Trek: First Contact:
- The best of the Next Generation Trek films. In fact up there with the best of the Trek films. Great villain. Good space battles, but I wish they were much longer.

Star Trek: Insurrection:
- The second worst of the Trek films. Boring story and a lackluster villain. Riker controlling the ship with a joy-stick? Come on. Good fx though.

Star Trek: Nemesis:
- This one gets picked on quite a bit. I actually like it though. Some very good space battle and finally we get to see the Romulans on screen. I also liked the idea of B-4 and the ending was sad with the sacrifice of Data to save his crew members.

Re: Star Trek (General discussion)

You know why ST: V really sucked?  Because they had to let The Big Giant Head direct it.  Seriously, Shatner made them put it in his contract that he got to direct V because of Nimoy directing III & IV.  Most of us call it Star Trek V: The Ego Trip.

ST: VI was definitely an improvement on the previous one.  My man Nick Meyer came back to direct it, having directed the masterful Wrath Of Khan.

But it will forever be marred for me by the fact that Saavik was supposed to be in it.  The early drafts of the script feature her.  When they couldn't make that happen, they had to create a whole new character to fulfill her function in the story, this Valeris.  It just rang false.  We're supposed to believe that Spock had two proteges that he felt close enough to so that what he does is not an actual mind-rape?  Nah-uh.  That was supposed to be Saavik, damnit.  There were big plans for that character.  In the Pocket Books novels, Spock and Saavik eventually married.  See Vulcan's Heart.  More here: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Saavik

Re: Star Trek (General discussion)

I know this is kinda embarrassing to admit, considering how I think of myself as a Trekkie, but I've never seen all the ST movies. The only ones I've seen are Star Trek IV, VII, VIII, IX and X. To my defense, I've always considered myself to be a Trekkie of the 90's and beyond. I have seen every single episode of TNG, DS9 and Voyager, most of them more than once. I never could get into The Original Series. I've seen maybe a handful of episodes. It's not that I hate it or anything, it just never interested me enough to want to catch up with it.

I can't recall much about Star Trek IV. I know I liked it well enough, but I couldn't write anything like a mini review.

Star Trek: Generations... Well, not the best ST movie ever made. Too much Kirk, if you ask me. tongue

Star Trek: First Contact... Probably the one I liked best of all the Star Trek movies I've seen. It had some great action, a solid story and a few cool jokes. Great fun.

Star Trek: Insurrection... Not quite as much action, but I still liked it. Maybe you have to be a woman to appreciate this one. wink Plus, Michael Welch is in it.

Star Trek: Nemesis... I wasn't impressed with this one. I've only seen it once, in the theater. Truth is, I've forgotten most about it by now. Sure hope the next movie's gonna be better!

Re: Star Trek (General discussion)

Same thing here. I watched the shows (mostly TNG and Voyager, somehow I didn't like DS9 that much), but never really got into the movies and I also don't know The Original Series. But I never called myself a Trekkie. Like I said, I loved watching it on TV, but I never considered to go further, like going to wear a uniform or going to conventions or something like that. I guess I'm more the TV person here. wink

Re: Star Trek (General discussion)

I've never seen a Star Trek film. Seen a few episodes of the classic episodes and those ones with Picard in. I am really looking foward towards the new film though. I have picked up a cheap Star Trek: Generations dvd, so i have got one to watch when i get a chance.

Re: Star Trek (General discussion)

All you need to watch of the movies is II, III & IV.  They're kind of a trilogy.  And they're damn near perfect.
