Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

Well, OK, I guess we can finally announce this.  Chris is off in Puerto Rico shooting a small role in Todd's informal sequelish project.  One HORRIBLE drawback just surfaced though.  Read this...

Is Paris Hilton the Answer to Todd Solondz's Cinematic Woes?

by Monika Bartyzel Nov 12th 2008 // 2:32PM

Filed under: Comedy, Drama, Casting, War
Bit by tenuous bit, Todd Solondz's next film is coming together. It started brewing in June of 2007, then stalled due to money issues, and then got cooking again in August with the help of Werc Werk Works. But now, oh now, the film has got its superstar.

The Hollywood Reporter posts that Paris Hilton has signed onto the dramatic comedy, along with Allison Janney and Charlotte Rampling. (In addition: "Ciaran Hinds, Shirley Henderson, Renee Taylor, Michael Lerner, Michael Kenneth Williams, Chane't Johnson, Eric Wareheim, and Chris Marquette are among the other actors that Werc Werk Works announced as joining the project. ")

Once called Life During Wartime (there's no title attached to the current news), the film still stars Paul Reubens and focuses on a family during wartime. If nothing has changed, it brings together characters from Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness with different people playing the roles. I first imagined Reubens as Dawn Wiener, but maybe it's Paris?

This could be terrible, and help along Solondz's cinematic decline, but I wonder if this could have House of Yes potential -- in other words, could Paris pull off something Tori Spelling-esque? If anything can make her interesting, I'd think it'd be screen time with PeeWee and Janney. Thoughts?

This will be the first time I'm forced to suffer watching someone I absolutely cannot stand in order to see Chris.  But at least there are some other good people in it.  And I keep reminding myself that Paris's little political ad was incredibly cute and funny.

Bit o' useless trivia for ya... This will be Chris's second time working with Ciaran Hinds.  They appear together in Race To Witch Mountain, which also stars Paris's aunt, Kim Richards.

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

<groans> Oh well, I guess I'll have to sit through this for Chris's sake. wink He's gonna have a pretty small role, though, right? I think he said he just went there for a week of shooting. So we're probably not gonna get a good share of Chris screentime in this one. Hope someone writes a little bit more about it in the upcoming months. At least Paris might put the movie a little more into the limelight. Dare we hope it's not gonna be one of those films that just vanish into the void for two or three years before it gets a token release?

According to Solondz's wikipedia page, the movie is starring Emma Thompson, Demi Moore, Paul Dano, Paris Hilton, Renee Taylor, Paul Reubens, Chi McBride, Chane't Johnson, Faye Dunaway, Dennis Franz, Hope Davis, Shirley Henderson, Renee Taylor, Michael Lerner, Michael Kenneth Williams, Eric Wareheim and Chris Marquette. For some of those names there are no source citations, so who knows if the info is actually correct...

Renee Taylor is in there twice and Charlotte Rampling and Allison Janney (Juno's stepmom!) are not mentioned at all.  I hate Wiki.

I can go and edit it. Why hate wiki? It's only as good as the people make it. If you don't like it, you can go and change it (as long as the info you put up there is correct).

I hate Wiki because anybody can post anything they want on there and often there's incorrect info that people take as gospel.  It bugs me that everyone uses it a resource, without realizing that it can be, and often is, just flat-out wrong.

Yeah, well, as long as you keep in mind the info up there doesn't necessarily have to be correct, I still think it's pretty good resource.

How can it be a good resource if it might be wrong?  How can you ever know what the truth is in anything you read on that site?

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

On some things, at least it gives you an idea what you're looking at. Like medical stuff. Like, you're watching Prison Break and Sara mentions a hypothalamus hamartoma. I go to wiki to look up what it is. It'll give me the basic idea that it's a kind of brain tumor and what symptoms it can cause and how you may treat it. Now, if I wanted to know more specifics about it, I'd go to Medline or some other reliable source for info.

Btw, I just put a blurb up on the front page.

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

Well, let's just say I wouldn't go to Wiki for info on an actor or a movie.  Or a TV show.  Or a historical event.  Or any person.  Or anything else that some smart-assed little punk might choose to post bad info about just to humor himself.  I've never looked up a tumor.

Yeah, wiki isn't my first choice for info on actors or movies or TV shows either. I've used it for looking up historical things. Like I said, at best it gives you an idea about what you're looking for.

So does Googling and ending up on real sites for things.  I'd choose Google over Wiki any day of the week.

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

This has been added to Chris's credits on IMDb now.  And here's the kicker --- looks like Ciran Hinds is playing, Bill, his character's dad.  Wow!  That's awesome.  He said basically his appearance in the film boils down to one scene between father and son.  I think he said Dad's in jail.  He said it'll probably be a pretty long scene, since that's the kind of movies Todd makes.  Even though it's a small role, this has a lot of potential, guys.  If any of you get really curious as to what this scene might entail, rent Happiness.

Interesting... looks like Happiness was never released on DVD in Germany. Could be that the movie has a different title in Germany, but I tried googling for it and found nothing that would indicate that it does. They offer it on amazon.de as VHS tape. In German. No thanks.

That is a solvable problem.  If the two of us are ever home at the same time on a weekend and we can get me up to speed on how to burn DVDs, I'll make sure you get a copy.

Yeah, I saw that too. I looked it up on amazon just for fun, but didn't really expect to find it.

And then I found out that I've already seen one of his movies. That one was called Palindromes and even though it was in German I couldn't really make sense of it. I'm hoping the best for this movie now ....

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

LOOKING very much forward to seeing Chris collaborate with this highly quirky directour.

"Welcome to the Dollhouse" was a true one-off film, I must say.

Solondz is a strange one, but this doesn't seem to have detracted from his ability to make watchable films.

(He and John Waters should collaborate ...)

Anyway,

I was excited to read this, from you Guys:

Chris to star in the new Todd Solondz movie ::: Posted on Nov 13, 2008 by TeeJay

Chris's latest project is a role in the new Todd Solondz movie that is currently still title-less. Once called Life During Wartime, the film stars Paul Reubens and focuses on a family during wartime. If nothing has changed since it was first announced a couple of years back, it brings together characters from Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness with different people playing the roles. The movie is currently being filmed on location in Puerto Rico.

For some people this might be a drawback: Paris Hilton also stars in the movie...
Source: www.cinematical.com

My only complaint about the news bit that you posted is that Hilton is also in this flick, but ... maybe she CAN act, so time will tell (?).

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

Looks like "Life During Wartime" may stick as a title for this movie.  That's cool, I like it.

Here's a very detailed description of the storyline from Solondz's website...

"The characters in this part-sequel/part-variation on HAPPINESS struggle to find a place for themselves in an unpredictable and volatile world. The past haunts the present and imperils the future: ghosts circle and loom, trouble and console. The question of forgiveness, and its limits, threads throughout a series of intersecting love stories, offering clarity and, possibly, alternatives to the comforts of forgetting. There is Joy (Shirley Henderson), who discovers her husband Allen (Michael Kenneth Williams) is not quite cured of his peculiar "affliction" and runs away, seeking solace and guidance from her mother and sisters; her former suitor, Andy (Paul Reubens), now deceased, but still never giving up in his effort to win Joy's heart; her sister Trish (Allison Janney), who meets Harvey (Michael Lerner), a lonely divorced man on the cusp of retirement, and hopes that a new man in the house will bring stability to her fragile family; her sister Helen who feels victimized by both her family and her Hollywood success; her mother Mona (Renée Taylor), who can't let go of her bitterness about men; Harvey's son Mark (Rich Pecci), who struggles with social isolation and profound pessimism; Bill (Ciáran Hinds), Trish's former husband, just released from prison and on a quest to reconnect with his son Billy (Chris Marquette); Jacqueline (Charlotte Rampling), the needy woman who forgoes caution in her desperate search for love; and Kristina (Chane't Johnson), a fugitive from prison who can't let go of her obsessive—albeit chaste—love for Allen. These and other characters and storylines as well—alternately funny and sad, outrageous and poignant—dovetail, expand, and collide to create a kaleidoscopic and emotionally resonant portrait of prisoners of love and life during wartime."

So Allison Janney's character's the mother of Chris's character, then?  That's cool!

Re: Life During Wartime (STRONG LANGUAGE - ADULT CONTENT)

Todd Solondz is a great writer and director! I've seen his films Happiness, Storytelling, and Welcome To The Dollhouse. It's great that Chris is going to be in one of Todd's movies but it's really lame Paris Hilton is going to be in the movie.

Sounds awfully complicated. I have to buy the Happiness DVD somewhere, I guess it would make sense to watch it before seeing this movie.

Oh, and for the Chris fans, he won't have a lot of screentime in this one. I think he said he was only shooting a handful of scenes, right?
