Re: Randomness

Good luck, Laura.  Though I'm not sure getting a job at Toys R Us during Christmas season is really a good thing.  But I guess it is if you need a job.  I suppose its good that you like kids.  smile

Re: Randomness

No, hey, I totally understand why you had to make the jump.  Some retail during the holidays isn't too awful.  Might be fun.  Ya never know.  I loved working in video during the holidays.  One year, we got bonuses for every movie we sold, so we were pushing the sell-thru titles like crazy --- and lucky for us we had a lot of rare Disney stuff --- we ended up kind of competing with each other.  The winner got another like another $25 extra, or something, on top of the per-tape bonus.  One of my kids got an extra $100 that year.

Congratulations, Laura. I really hope you're gonna enjoy the job, Christmas season and all. Kinda reminds me of Carl in Graduation. Shame the scene with him and Lowell in the store didn't make it into the movie.

Hey Laura, a great thing about the job! big_smile I'll bet it will be eating away all your strengh, hurt you feet and maybe even make you spit out a few curses but it will be worth it. I'll bet there's gonna be lots of smiles and nice people and all. big_smile Keep a firm hold of your sanity; I'll bet it will taking a few hits amongst the holiday-crazed people. wink

Thanks Tina. You always make me feel so welcome and warm and fuzzy on the inside! lol

Re: Randomness

So the Weather Channel said we got 4 inches here in Romeoville.

But I went outside and what I can see it looks more like maybe an inch at best. I can still see grass and leaves on the ground that the snow didn't cover up. Looks like a snowfall that isn't very uniform in coverage, perhaps where they measured was 4 inches, but not where I'm at.

It took them until this morning to even start plowing/salting the road here. And around 10 AM to do the side streets. But the main roads were pretty good.

Most of the snow came down North & West of Chicago. Being that I'm Southwest of Chicago we got less here.
Just hate that this came out of nowhere. A few days ago the Weather Channel was saying rain mixed with snow, with a slushy total of less than an inch. Then bam!!, Winter Weather Advisory, Winter Storm Warning for the North & West suburbs a few hours later. Went from nothing on the ground to everything snow covered & icy and chilly.

Re: Randomness

It even snowed in Atlanta a little bit earlier today.  Just flurries of course.  Looks like old man winter is coming around early this year.

Re: Randomness

This is how I rank the temps for the Winter months.

35 & up : Heat Wave
30 - 35: Seasonal and comfortable. Can be out in nothing more than a light weight coat for short times.
25 - 30: Chilly. More bundled up. Gloves necessary
20 - 25: Cold. Bundled up. Gloves & hat necessary
15 - 20: Very cold: As above
5 - 15: Very, very cold. As above, plus a scarf and more clothes.
Under 5 and anything below zero: Extremely cold to dangerously cold for anything approaching actual temp of -10. I wouldn't even go outside unless it was an emergency or extremely important.

How would you rate the temps that are normal for your area for winter and then those for up North?

I hope it snows at least once this year. I really want it to snow on Christmas. I haven't seen any snow in over 8 years.

Re: Randomness

It's been relatively warm here for few days now. Right now the thermometer says -3 celsius (26,6 F) The snow has melted into slosh but it's still there. A bit colder on the nights so the roads look pretty icy and ruts are there again.. And I have to start doing t he shopping hulabaluu one of these days.. jaiks..

Finnish winter tempatures.. This is how I'd rate it...

+10C/ 50F: heat wave. Clothing: Long pants, shirt, light jacket.

+5C / 41F: Still pretty warm. Clothing as above, just a thicker shirt or jacket if it's windy.

0C / 32F: A bit chilly. Winter jacket. Hat, gloves and underpants if it's windy.

-5C / 23F: Cold. Clothing: all of above.

-10C / 14F: Nose freezes- cold. Clothing: all of above and still cold but I'll be damned if I pull out the real winter pants on at this point... I don't spend that much time outside in this temperature.

-15C / 5F: Icy cheeks-cold. Clothing: all of above and the winter pants just for a quick trip to the store.

-20C/-4F: Eyelashes turn white- cold. I wouldn't go outside at any cost. But some crazy Finns go skiing in full winter gear (or less if they expect to get swety).

-25C/ -13F: Freezing cold. If I was forced to go out, after five minutes I'd loose sensation in my butt.

-30C/ -22F: Can't move my face- cold.  Still some finns are totally nuts and go skiing. (like my sports maniac brother; he's got asthma, he loves to do sports in cold)

-35C/ -31F: Polar bears would seek for warmth too- cold.

-40C/ -40F: Santa's not coming this year- cold. Even the loonies stay in.

Where I grew up it really was -40 one winter. Still we were supposed to go to school. But most people stayed at home. The town dog-breader lost his membership in the kennel coalition because he killed some of his dogs and made clothes out of their furs...:o

Re: Randomness

The coldest it's been here was -24 in January 1985.

I remember the lowest High temperature was -11. Now that was a cold high. I can still remember how the sound was different. The planes sounded different, the snow crackling under my feet sounded different. There were ice crystals floating in the air. We had to go out and get a battery for the family car. The front windows of the Walmart I went to had frost on the inside front windows/doors, that's how cold it was.

Re: Randomness

Okay, so I had to work on Saturday and tomorrow I have to work from 10.15am to 7pm. Which is cool because I can sleep longer but I don't like staying at work until 7pm. It's dark then already. Oh well. Thank God Chrismas is only once a year. roll

Re: Randomness

I had to google that guy, I was so intrigued about what's bugging you. I didn't get much wiser. Just woke up with a flu, can't concentrate on reading long texts.. But I guess it's because he was voted as the new senator? Why's that bad? I don't know crap about american politics but for some weird reason the word 'republic' sounds like a curseword... or like something a cat puked on my favorite carpet... Too much TV for me...

Re: Randomness

Saxby Chamblis is a creep.  Plain and simple.  He was already the senator.  We were trying to unseat him this time around.  He won his seat in the last election by questioning the patriotism of a great man, Senator Max Cleland.  Max lost both legs and an arm in Vietnam.  He was our senator for many, many years.  And a great one.  He was the champion of veterans rights.  And I can tell you from personal experience that he really cared about his constituents.  His office helped my mom get her benefits started after my stepfather died.  We were having a hell of a time and Max assigned someone to cut through the red tape for us, just based on a letter I wrote to him.

But this Chamblis asshole ran a nasty, evil campaign against Max.  How can anyone question the patriotism of a man who left three limbs behind fighting for his country?  What a despicable cad!  I can't belive we elected him the last time much less that we re-elected him again.  It does not speak well for my state, I tell you that much.

And now the Democrats have lost the chance at a filibuster-proof super majority in the senate.  So everything Obama tries to do will be blocked by the rethuglicans.  Makes me heartsick.

Re: Randomness

Gnnnarrrrgh!
What is it with me and losing my keys all the time???? Remember how I lost my plastic key for the soda maschine at work last week? Well, luckily I found it again. But today I lost the key of my locker. On the street. Which pretty much sucks. It just fell off my jacket and when I heard some "klingbimm" sound I looked, but didn't see anything. And it was dark already. But then I noticed the key was missing, so I walked back to the street and looked for it, but I couldn't find it, it was too dark. F****!!! My boss is going to be mad at me. sad
Well, I'll try looking for the key tomorrow morning, maybe I'm lucky.
