Re: Random JoA Stuff...

OK, I can't stand it, I gotta share what Chris said about Mary.  I'm working on the transcription and I couldn't wait to get to this part.  I love Mary, so I've been dying to talk to Chris about his amazing rapport with her.  Finally got to do that this time around.  It's much cuter to hear him say this stuff.  The next part of the interview is on the way. TeeJay is traveling to the UK for a week or so and we'll hopefully be able to post it shortly after she gets home.  The transcript is almost done, but there's more sound editing to do.  Hang in there.

In the meantime, what he said about Mary...

Deb: There's something I've always wanted to ask you about, it's not in the cards, um, Mary Steenburgen is one of my favorite people on the planet.

Chris: Me too, oh... me too.

Deb: And you guys had just the most amazing chemistry together. Every time you had a scene...

Chris: That's because I was sort of in love with Mary Steenburgen.

(Laughs)

Chris: I didn't even wanna like kiss her. I just wanted to just know that she was mine.

(Laughs)

Chris: I always wanted a wedding with Mary Steenburgen. I was gonna kidnap Ted Danson one weekend.  Make him disappear and just uh, "Sorry Mary, I know, I know, it's so hard to deal with. Ted is gone. He's gone. Hey, come over, what are you doing? Let's watch a movie."

(Laughs)

Deb: First time I met her, I was just a teenager.

Chris: Yeah?

Deb: And she was so sweet.

Chris: Yeah, she's really one of the coolest, nicest people.

Deb: She's actually the reason I even gave the show a chance.

Chris: Really?

Deb: So she's responsible for all of this basically when you get right down to it.

Chris: She's so wonderful.

Deb: That's cool.  That's cool.  I'm so glad...

Re: Random JoA Stuff...

That Danburgen Dancers thing is HIGHlarious.  Freakin' Malcolm McDowell narrates it!  Mary's first hubby and father of her children.  In fact, I think Mac is in a couple of those pics and I know I saw Lily and Charlie in there too.  That's so awesome.  big_smile

Re: Random JoA Stuff...

Me too, Maria, me too.  That's why I mention Adam's voice so often in Butterflies.  As far as him sounding relaxed with us, that's his gift, actually.  He just puts you at ease instantly.  His mom says he's kind of wary of people, but I've never gotten that vibe from him.  He's kind to everyone as far as I've seen.

Re: Random JoA Stuff...

Actually, Dawn, we talk to her a lot via email.  She contacted us shortly after the site went up to tell us that she loves it, that when she found it she sat up all night reading everything and looking at all the pics and stuff.  She said it's such a loving tribute to her boys that it made her cry.  We've been talking to her ever since.  It was actually Tisha who invited us out to California for our recent visit.  Unfortunately, circumstances beyond our control prevented us from getting to meet her this time around.  But we'll do it next time.

We're also friendly with Michael Welch's amazing mom, Jill --- as you probably saw from our trip report.  And I am email buddies with Dan Fogler's mom, Shari, too.  Also, I've made friends with Susan Markowitz, the mother of the real boy, Nicholas Markowitz, who was murdered in the case that Alpha Dog is based on.  Somehow, we seem to be mom magnets.  LOL!

Re: Random JoA Stuff...

Susan is really nice, but she's also still really sad.  She has her ups and down.  It's still really hard on the family that Jesse James Hollywood has not be convicted and sentenced yet.  The trial's supposed to start finally in February.  I can't even imagine losing your only child so senselessly at only 15 years old.  There just are no words.

You can take a look at her MySpace if you'd like:

And this is her memorial page for Nick:

Just read a nice interview with Mary Steenburgen and they asked her about JoA...

Megan: One of my favorite roles of yours was the mom in "Joan of Arcadia."

Mary Steenburgen: Oh thank you. I loved doing that series. We were very close. That was a very close group of people. In fact we are still very close. I saw Amber (Tamblyn) just not long ago.

Megan: I think she's wonderful.

Mary Steenburgen: Um-hmm.

Megan: The chemistry between you was great, and I wonder if there is anything in particular that you would look for in another television series if you were to do one?

Mary Steenburgen: Well I will be really honest with you, that one kind of broke my heart, and it took me a while to get over that because I did not understand, you know, our ratings were not bad, and we had been pre-empted a lot.

And rather than give us time to get back up and nurture us somehow it kind of was yanked. And it was such a labor of love for all of us that was on it. I felt like it was one of the few things I have even seen on television that approached a deeply complicated idea in a really respectful way of the intelligence of the audience.

Nobody was ever talked down to. And the questions that were being taught to them and things that were being asked and that were so immense, you know...and I felt like it was such a---it was inspiring, but not from the point of view of we have got all the answers. And there was nothing ever false or saccharine about it.

And so it just to me was such a gem that when we kind of, you know, were told we were not coming back...it took me, I mean really it was like a death in the family. I took that pretty hard.

Nice to know it wasn't just the fans who mourned the loss of thise great show.

Here's a link to the whole interview:
http://www.blogher.com/interview-academ … hristmases

Great interview!  I love that she misses it as much as we do, too.  And she's been around long enough to know that good work like that doesn't come around that often.

Re: Random JoA Stuff...

Thanks for posting that.  My bad for not doing it.  I guess I often wonder if anyone loves Mary as much as I do.  I looked for more interviews last week, but that was the only longish one I could find.  Most of the others are just quickies meant to promote Four Christmases.
